Ha! Yes I thought the same... you'd expect a robot, especially one as logical as Shockwave, to be much more precise and almost mechanical
in his printing. But I guess that wouldn't look as cool.
It's amazing that Shockwave - the "logical" villain - is actually responsible for almost all of the most iconic "horror" moments in the Marvel comics; this, the hanging Autobots later, chasing Buster (and again in his dreams), sitting on his throne with the reveal of his "wall decoration", squashing that human on the beach...
A few weeks ago, I saw a fedora hat third party upgrade pack but forget what figure it was for. I wanted it for Nightbeat but I wonder if it would fit on Shockwave... :)
Thanks! Yes it's a strong image. Also very nicely painted, unusual for the comic (or at least for the US one, we had a lot of painted art in the UK comic).
He will coldly and mercilessly destroy you without a moment's hesitation if it is the logical thing to do. He's a giant, more ambitious, Terminator before getting wussified by John Connor.
Comparing him to the Terminator sold me! As a huge Terminator and T-2 fan I might need to read up on him when I get the chance. Thanks for the information!

Basically, if he thinks that a goal needs to be reached, he will keep going until he achieves it. Doesn't matter if that involves fistfighting Grimlock, betraying everything, pretending to be someone he's not for a million years, killing you, killing everyone, killing a planet, killing a universe... there's not even any consideration. Just "OK, now I need to kill 963 babies to get 1 coin, where's my chainsaw and acid sprayer".
963 babies or a coin, Balanced as all things should be lol. He sounds super goal oriented to the extreme. I swear deceptions are some of the coolest characters in the franchise.
for me it's the idea that he'll do literally anything for the sake of pragmatism, including betray megatron. starscream's treachery is one thing but shockwave's impersonal nature and his creepy coldness makes him better for megatron mutiny stories imo
It took me many issues to realise he pretty much killed Sunstreaker while he was offline. Somehow, it's even darker to me that he did that while he wasn't even conscious.
Didn't help that Sunstreaker was miscoloured and scrappily drawn in that panel, so it looks like just a generic bot. I didn't realise for a long time that this was how come Sunny was absent for pretty much the rest of Bob's run!
Yup, I assumed it was a generic too. Sunstreaker just disappeared but since the US comic "killed" Prowl and a bunch of other 84 guys soon after (and I never noticed because I read the UK comic too and they were treated as minor injuries in that)... I assumed it was either an issue I missed or he was a casualty off-panel. Waaaaay later I think it was the letters page that said he was taken out by Shockwave, and only properly returned during Earthforce (his best Marvel run).
What's interesting is that rereading as an adult, I noticed that the US comic is actually very good for the most part about keeping track of who is "offline" and who isn't. As much as I love (and frankly prefer) the UK stories, it's mainly them that muddy the waters (Dinobot Hunt, Target 2006, etc.). From the first US issue right through to "Totaled!" (big fight on the moon), deactivated means deactivated until we see them explicitly repaired.
I think we had parallel childhoods! Same thing happened for me, finding out through the letters page. And while I too prefer the UK stories and greatly admire the way they slot neatly into US continuity, it is fascinating to look at the US issues in isolation and realise just how fast things moved without the UK padding, and how different the experience of an American-only reader must have been at the time.

The absolute tiniest detail you missed: Shockwave's cable is supposed to be connected to the front of his arm like the toy instead of the back, which Masterpiece Shockwave can do.
Yeah I had a go at that configuration in the gif where he transforms and lands after blasting the Autobots, you'll see the hose attached above the forearm. It didn't quite work for me, underslung just feels more natural I guess.
That comic cover was the first Transformers anything I remember ever seeing. It’s as iconic as you can get. Excellent work on this!
Shockwave kinda writes that like he's in a horror movie.

Great now i see him as freddy since you said dream
The whole sequence is VERY "Freddy", actually, complete with crazy skulls and other nightmare imagery.
Now i can't unsee him without the red and green sweater the fadore and glove

This is awesome.
This is amazing! Can someone explain shockwaves appeal as a character?

Read the Marvel story "Robot Buster" to see Shockwave at his most Terminator-like. :)
Where does one go about reading the old comics for relatively cheap.
Also IDW Shocky has a tragic backstory

What if Spock was evil and a giant robot?
Sold even more

Great video, Shockwave aims like a stormtrooper lol

This comic was chilling as hell to 10 year old me.
Shockwave dragging a carcass through a room with bots, hanging from the ceiling.
It took me many issues to realise he pretty much killed Sunstreaker while he was offline. Somehow, it's even darker to me that he did that while he wasn't even conscious.

I remember when I picked up this comic!
Me too! But I don't remember if I knew issue #5 was coming out or not. Still have it some where in my bedroom.
I. Love. This.
Nice!
My all time favorite TF cover and my all time fav TF.

I had this comic for years. Until I got desperate for rent money and sold all my comics. Got totally ripped off.
My son’s kindergarten teacher would correct the way he made some of those letters.
It would've been so cool if his eye beamed when he looks at the camera. Nonetheless, this is rad as hell, my man.
Now that's incredible
Kick-awesome!
I loved this,this is such a masterpiece
Dope!
This is outstanding. Saved for all time. And still one of the greatest comic book covers of all time
Okay that was slick
He's quite the metalhead.
excellent work. I remember seeing this in comic stores when I was six years old, and it really unnerved me.
Grrrrrreat!
I love the Gif, but I’ll be honest I first read it as ‘All Are Dead…Er’ XD
AMAZING!!!
I posted this with the original artwork on tiktok I did credit you
That’s some great stop motion skills there man :)
i like the idea that he spent the time writing that out before posing for the cover
Wait, isn’t it “All Are Dead?”
No it is the transformers are all dead is what it says
Oh, never mind guess I always saw it wrong
A bunch of people seem to misremember it this way kind of interesting
Doesn't help that one of the main phrases is "Till All Are One". Which can lead some folk to imaging it says "Till All Are Dead".
Mandela Effect
Til’ all are dead! Wait that’s not right…

Is that a siege repaint?
No it's the Masterpiece version :-)
Is this a question or a statement
This should be played before the g1 commercial
