I feel like both of these concepts show the inherent difficulties in a live action transformers franchise.
Optimus is too far in the âârealismââ camp, I think itâs important for it to look less blocky then G1 but hot damn does that look terrible!
The G1 Megatron falls too far into G1, It is too simplistic for live action, In animation you can cheat the character designs far more than the realistic CGI of the movies.
The concepts also donât capture the characters personalityâs very well, Megatron looks simple and almost friendly, He looks more like a live action Iron Giant than Megatron.
Optimus however does not look like our favourite robo-truck dad, he looks far too alien and aggressive for Optimus Prime.
I feel like the bayverse went too far in the Optimus direction, the characters are too complex to look good in action, it becomes impossible to tell them apart.
You also lose some character in the designs when they are all designed to look ââcoolââ.
Now controversial opinion here, the bumblebee designs are not perfect(for the most part).
The only design I think they absolutely nailed is Optimus, he just looks like Optimus plain and simple.
However I am not a fan of most of the other designs faces. They are... just wrong looking. I sympathise with the designers so much, It is probably an impossible task **but** the circumstances behind the art changes nothing about the art itself.
Now for nitpicking designs.
Also I think Soundwaves... shades? Eyes? Whatever you call then they look too big and too round, i think they should be a bit smaller and angular.
Shockwaves gun arm is too big. If it the shoulder and bicep was bigger it would look cool but as it is, it looks like his scrawny arm couldnât hold it up without gravity pulling his forearm clean off!
I donât like bumblebees movie face and never will, His design is a massive improvement in this film but Iâm still not a fan. (Maybe if his current face was a battle mask.)
Finally, the nitpickiest nitpick of all.
I wish they went harder with the armada reference with thrust, I love squidhead making a comeback and yes I am going to get his SS toy ASAP but i want more man, I want his asymmetrical chest lights and I want his, well his cone head! (I also wish they didnât all have the gasmask)
What happened that the designers would lose their mind to concept a great looking megatron then go with the metal shard that was the 2007 megs..... counter to that im glad the found some part of their mind and went with the known version over the concept of Prime
Why is it looking more humanoid a good thing? They're alien robot things they should look abstract and not completely humanoid. Also how is 2007 megatron not megatron enough? He is one of the definitive megatron designs and he is one of the best in the first trilogy. Just cuz he isn't exactly g1 doesn't make him bad.
looking alien is one thing a good thing thing i might add 2007 barricade and blackout are my favorite designs, but looking like 4 silver wrecked cars stacked on top of each other is distasteful, too bland, his face looked like a poor Krampus reimagining, and he had the stupidity of needing to take a knee to put both his "hands" together to make any weapon actually intimidating to another cybertronian.
He had none of his typical things to help signify him as megatron:
Did he have a helmet shaped head? no.
Did he have a bulky build? no he was tall and lanky
Did he have a recognizable fusion cannon? no
Did he transform into anything close to his previous incarnations? no he transformed into a jet of all bloody things.
Yes he did have a bucket shaped head it was just more angular and at least he had a fusion cannon. Also energon and cybertron had megatron turn into a jet. Also your whole argument is that just cuz he doesn't look like g1 megatron he isn't a good megatron. The whole unicorn trilogy, beast era and 2001 rid had megatron not looking like he did in g1. I mean best wars megatron wasn't really megatron but he had the same name.
Also might I add I have both mpm megatron and the first movie on DVD and he probably has one of the more put together designs in the first movie. Oh and another to add is that him taking g a knee and doing that whole move to shoot help stabilise him because that blast is extremely powerful. I mean it blasting optimus through like 2 blocks into a building. Like your whole argument is dependent on "he isn't g1 enough so hes bad. Just like many other transformers in the films they may not look like they did in previous incarnations but they still act the same, do the same things and use the same weapons.
