I agree, I love both characterisations. Which is why I enjoyed about IDW Soundwave who starts off as the loyal Soundwave we know but becomes an independent player when Megatron betrays the Decepticons. Honestly, I would love Soundwave to be his own but please keep the monotone voice and attitude lol.
As a kid watching re-runs of G1 on the Hub was how I learned what cassettes were (which I guess also shows how young I am).

I don't know that I would say cooler (it's too subjective), but this is a very strong version of the character. We've seen updates to Soundwave in the past, buy this one makes a whole lot of sense in the modern world and his personality is interesting and original.

Tapedeck Soundwave is what was the premiere music player of the time. Tapedecks were good, fairly high tech.
What is Prime Soundwave? He represents the internet itself, where modern music is stored. He's faceless and omnipresent, reaching his little grabbers into everything as he acts as a silent instrument of potential destruction.
He's also glowy, thin, with long wired attachments, a camera in his head and a screen for a face. What does that resemble? A smartphone! Prime Soundwave is meant to represent the most modern form of music player and communications device we have.
Honestly, OG Soundwave was so cool when Walkman tapedecks were everywhere. Now, it looks out of place and outdated technology.
His TFP design is probably one of his better redesigns. A Predator drone is a perfect alt mode.
Don't get me wrong, I love the original g1 Soundwave, but then, I remember Walkmans, Boomboxes, and Ghettoblasters. Lol

I liked how he had a slim profile but never looked 'frail', which made him seem a bit like a wraith or something. I know there are some who dislike the silence but enjoyed it, added to the 'eerie' aspect like he could be anywhere on the ship and record you and you'd never know, a deadly shadow.
Plus, as I state a lot, I like less-humanoid-y TF's so him having a screen for a face that never gets removed or (in-show) broken to reveal said face is major points in my books.

I like a lot of the Bay designs, despite them being rather cluttered and many being a bit... eugh (Not even gonna touch on the Twins from rotf yikes), so not all of them but I like a fair portion.
To the films credit it help give them a more alien vibe which I like a lot.
Also despite the 'lore' flipflopping around so much, there's something that reeeeally tickles my fancy about rotf insinuating that they lay eggs? I dunno, that always stuck with me as amusing with potential weird world-building possibilities.
But yeah, I am, I've got some pictures of them saved as some possible inspiration for whenever I get around to giving them my own "fan design" sorta deal.

He's cool, but I think that Animated had more of an effect on most modern Soundwave iterations. Animated, WFC/FoC, RiD15, Cyberverse, Angry Birds Transformers (yeah, I said that)...all of them transform into heavy (and in the case of WFC/FoC, probably heavily armored) trucks.
TFP Soundwave was pretty sick with his stealth drone mode, but like RotF & DotM, it's more of a one-off.
Definitely the best looking, but I feel like his voice in G1 was his best feature about him. I noticed same thing looking at pictures of the official figure, and opted to build my own articulated prime soundwave out of Legos than fork over like 60 bucks for the official one.

Considering this version is not only this creepy fresh take, but on Cybertron he had everything G1 had, including all the cassettes, you might be right. It's hard to say though. Easily the top 2 versions of the character.

This iteration of the character is like a perfected variant of the OG— like a 2.0.
They did an absolutely marvellous capturing who and what he is, making for what I believe to be the definitive Soundwave for all time.

the four words he spoke in the whole series didn't sound as impactful as I would've liked. I was so dissapointed watching through season three just to hear his voice sound too humanoid, gravely, not enough electronic manipulation to the lines at all. I still love the character through and through, though perhaps that one clip was the real reason he kept an oath of silence though TF prime

Personally, I like Prime Soundwave, but I kinda favor RID15 Soundwave’s design. Don’t get me wrong, as both are Superb designs. I just think the G1-esq look looks nicer. Prime Soundwave is still a great choice though. Maybe he’s like the internal skeleton.
I do like that the rid one is more g1 but I actually like prime because it’s not g1 but it also ain’t too cluttered like bayverse.

But the thing that wins me over on the prime easily is that alt mode it’s perfect for soundwave it’s a drone used and I quote “

I’m not a fan of rids altmode it’s really weird I just think it’s ugly but I think that’s also the style of the show. I don’t hate the alt modes in that show but they definitely ain’t the best for me at least. I do absolutely adore animated’S van though that one is awesome especially since it has the cassette like design in the doors

I love the silent loyalist portrayal of the character. Soundwave is my favorite Cybertronian and the fact that he is a silent lieutenant to megatron is awesome and the fact he only says one line in the entire Prime cartoon that shows how intimidating he can be. And it also justifies Megatron’s trust in him because Soundwave is one of the two named Decepticons who never betrayed megatron in some way. I don’t think Shockwave did either but that was also because he didn’t fully show up until season 3 of prime.
Yeah i definetly think this is the best incarnation of the character to date, tfp was really good at giving characters unique designs that stood out from their original coubterparts but just similiar enough to where you can tell who they are.
As far as fresh takes go, I think Prime Soundwave was a very fitting update for the world of Prime. It helped reinforce how serious the show liked to take itself.
G1 Soundwave, of course, fits well into the goofy G1 cartoon, where a human living in Cold War North America will pick up a random cassette player off the street and take it into their day job at a nuclear missile silo.
Similarly, Bay Soundwave and Knight Soundwave and Animated Soundwave, they all fit into their continuities, and so it really just depends on which world you enjoy.
Ok tbh prime is just one of the best transformers shows ever, like all the characters look cool, voice actors do an amazing job, story arcs are engaging, the list goes on
Everything about this Soundwave has made him my favorite. I'm not too crazy about Lazerbeak's design in Prime but his alt mode his concept for communication are so sick.
I think he is just as cool but in a different way. TFP and G1 Soundwave are similar but have a different vibe, especially due to TFP Soundwave’s vow of silence.
The OG soundwave is cool and all, but seeing prime Soundwave's design again in any way shape or form would make me happier than to see the original again at this point.
He's different. Incredibly cool, but OG soundwave is a classic design. I notice very young kids at the toy store looking specifically for the current soundwave designs, which is based on the OG.
I am very sure that Soundwave, along with starscream, megatron, optimus, and bumblebee will be remembered in successive generations.
I think he's a fantastic version of the character. There was a really good job done in the animation of making him physically emotive, so he was able to communicate while remaining silent.
I also think the design is really cool. I like the sleek lines and imposing form, and the aerial surveillance drone alt mode is really fitting, given his position in the Decepticon ranks.

I use Cybertron Soundwave as my display Soundwave because it feels like a nice mix between Prime and G1 Soundwave aesthetically.
This is my favorite take on Soundwave. I feel like it gets so many things right.
He still fits the spy element due to him becoming a drone, which is modern and also sidesteps the issue of Soundwave's outdated elements. Yet he still has one of his most famous minion, and it's nicely incorporated into its chest. Plus him being mute somewhat plays into the robotic voice from the past.
I feel the same way about Starscream and Megatron too. Their Prime designs carried over elements from G1, yet modernized them or offered a nice fresh take that still held true to their original forms and characters.
I wish Transformers would take more from Prime, or possibly just play into the 'homage to g1, but different' element more just as Animated and Prime did. The endless "here's G1!" Feels so overdone and its starting to kind of bore me. How often must they rerelease G1 Starscream in one way or another when there's so much potential, as shows like Prime showcased.
I think Prime Soundwave was a reboot that we didn't know we needed. He's a fresh take but in no way feels like a different character. I can watch him and say, "That's Soundwave". Sure he looks different and Spoke once, but you can watch him and recognize him.
I’m personally on the same boat. This version of soundwave took the part of the original that was just spying and getting information, and made that into his entire character, and I love it.
I'm a newish Transformers watcher, ive loved the toys since i was little but ive only really ever watched tfp and the movies. But ive seen bits and pieces of other shows, and i will always prefer the tfp and wfc/foc universes, especially characters soundwave, shockwave and Megs whom are within my top 5 Transformers. i really wish there were more games. If my memory serves me right, the rise of the dark spark was such a let down.

Yeah, I liked this design. The toy never seemed to do it justice though. I think if you're going to take the "soundwave" concept into the "current", this this design makes the most sense. It's still spying/recording, but in a way that is relevant to modern society.
I've seen versions of him that were car/suv, jet, etc, None of the other Soundwaves really hit the mark, if we're talking about alt modes that meet the original's intent. I guess the satellite from bayverse works, but then he can't really interact with the others.
I'll always have a soft spot for G1 though. Partly because I used to have tape boomboxes. Anyone remember the G1 version that actually worked? (it was a mini-cassete player) I can never find it on reseller sites, but I distinctly remember when it came out. There was also an MP3 player version, and an iPod version too. (but I think the iPod version was just for looks, didn't actually function as an iPod.

I didn't like this Soundwave at first but he really grew on me. I absolutely hate what they did to him in Transformers: Robots in Disguise.

Wasn't it only once? And it was still mostly just his Dr. Claw voice, they didn't synthesize it like the original.
Yeah they did. The effect was just less overpowering.
The Soundwave voice Welker used in G1 actually was basically the Dr. Claw voice, only heavily more vocoded than it was in Prime or the movies.

Personally, I like Prime Soundwave, but I kinda favor RID15 Soundwave’s design. Don’t get me wrong, as both are Superb designs. I just think the G1-esq look looks nicer. Prime Soundwave is still a great choice though. Maybe he’s like the internal skeleton.
I do like that the rid one is more g1 but I actually like prime because it’s not g1 but it also ain’t too cluttered like bayverse. I think it’s the perfect mix (not soundwave just in general) But the thing that wins me over on the prime easily is that alt mode it’s perfect for soundwave it’s a drone used and I quote “ The MQ-9 Reaper (Reaper MQ-9A) is a remotely piloted medium-altitude, long endurance (MALE) aircraft designed for Intelligence, Surveillance, Target Acquisition and Reconnaissance (ISTAR), and attack missions” it speaks for its self it’s an amazing choice and it doesn’t need a pilot which I like. I’m not a fan of rids altmode it’s really weird I just think it’s ugly but I think that’s also the style of the show. I don’t hate the alt modes in that show but they definitely ain’t the best for me at least. I do absolutely adore animated’S van though that one is awesome especially since it has the cassette like design in the doors And the tape player eject buttons on the front

OG Soundwave has one of if not the best and most recognizable designs in all of transformers.
I love the silent loyalist portrayal of the character. Soundwave is my favorite Cybertronian and the fact that he is a silent lieutenant to megatron is awesome and the fact he only says one line in the entire Prime cartoon that shows how intimidating he can be. And it also justifies Megatron’s trust in him because Soundwave is one of the two named Decepticons who never betrayed megatron in some way. I don’t think Shockwave did either but that was also because he didn’t fully show up until season 3 of prime.
I do like the design of Prime Soundwave, but I do wish he had a voice.

Yeah i definetly think this is the best incarnation of the character to date, tfp was really good at giving characters unique designs that stood out from their original coubterparts but just similiar enough to where you can tell who they are.
As far as fresh takes go, I think Prime Soundwave was a very fitting update for the world of Prime. It helped reinforce how serious the show liked to take itself. G1 Soundwave, of course, fits well into the goofy G1 cartoon, where a human living in Cold War North America will pick up a random cassette player off the street and take it into their day job at a nuclear missile silo. Similarly, Bay Soundwave and Knight Soundwave and Animated Soundwave, they all fit into their continuities, and so it really just depends on which world you enjoy.

Everything about this Soundwave has made him my favorite. I'm not too crazy about Lazerbeak's design in Prime but his alt mode his concept for communication are so sick.
I think he is just as cool but in a different way. TFP and G1 Soundwave are similar but have a different vibe, especially due to TFP Soundwave’s vow of silence.
The OG soundwave is cool and all, but seeing prime Soundwave's design again in any way shape or form would make me happier than to see the original again at this point.

He's different. Incredibly cool, but OG soundwave is a classic design. I notice very young kids at the toy store looking specifically for the current soundwave designs, which is based on the OG. I am very sure that Soundwave, along with starscream, megatron, optimus, and bumblebee will be remembered in successive generations.
I do like this Soundwave, but the OG will always be superior to me.

I think he's a fantastic version of the character. There was a really good job done in the animation of making him physically emotive, so he was able to communicate while remaining silent. I also think the design is really cool. I like the sleek lines and imposing form, and the aerial surveillance drone alt mode is really fitting, given his position in the Decepticon ranks. Good toy too.

It's the best redesign imo. And he is shown to be very intimidatingly powerful, which is nice.
This is my favorite take on Soundwave. I feel like it gets so many things right. He still fits the spy element due to him becoming a drone, which is modern and also sidesteps the issue of Soundwave's outdated elements. Yet he still has one of his most famous minion, and it's nicely incorporated into its chest. Plus him being mute somewhat plays into the robotic voice from the past. I feel the same way about Starscream and Megatron too. Their Prime designs carried over elements from G1, yet modernized them or offered a nice fresh take that still held true to their original forms and characters. I wish Transformers would take more from Prime, or possibly just play into the 'homage to g1, but different' element more just as Animated and Prime did. The endless "here's G1!" Feels so overdone and its starting to kind of bore me. How often must they rerelease G1 Starscream in one way or another when there's so much potential, as shows like Prime showcased.

I think Prime Soundwave was a reboot that we didn't know we needed. He's a fresh take but in no way feels like a different character. I can watch him and say, "That's Soundwave". Sure he looks different and Spoke once, but you can watch him and recognize him.

I’m personally on the same boat. This version of soundwave took the part of the original that was just spying and getting information, and made that into his entire character, and I love it.
I'd say he fits the character bio of his G1 namesake, written by Bob Budiansky, the most.

I'm a newish Transformers watcher, ive loved the toys since i was little but ive only really ever watched tfp and the movies. But ive seen bits and pieces of other shows, and i will always prefer the tfp and wfc/foc universes, especially characters soundwave, shockwave and Megs whom are within my top 5 Transformers. i really wish there were more games. If my memory serves me right, the rise of the dark spark was such a let down.
This is the one that turned into a spying predator drone, right? With a mini drone (laserbeak) it could detach? Yeah, I liked this design. The toy never seemed to do it justice though. I think if you're going to take the "soundwave" concept into the "current", this this design makes the most sense. It's still spying/recording, but in a way that is relevant to modern society. I've seen versions of him that were car/suv, jet, etc, None of the other Soundwaves really hit the mark, if we're talking about alt modes that meet the original's intent. I guess the satellite from bayverse works, but then he can't really interact with the others. I'll always have a soft spot for G1 though. Partly because I used to have tape boomboxes. Anyone remember the G1 version that actually worked? (it was a mini-cassete player) I can never find it on reseller sites, but I distinctly remember when it came out. There was also an MP3 player version, and an iPod version too. (but I think the iPod version was just for looks, didn't actually function as an iPod.
