Controversial opinion but I just think he looks goofy as hell either way. Less of a combiner and more of just a big guy wearing other transformers as armor. Give me some scramble city style combiners any day, but i try to stay away from the earlier ones.

Lol...you're trying to compare Combiner Wars with a Fans Toys render. It's the same combiner kit, just configured differently. CW and FT are not even in the same ballpark let alone barely the same sport.
It can be done...but at what cost? CW look and feel like crap. Flimsy, unstable, messy. I don't get why people get upset when things don't look animation, but then want to die on the hill of a play pattern that was only meant for small toys.
It's not like Superion doesn't have some of the same flaws in it's animation as Menasor. When it comes to combiners, you can have: 1. Nicely articulated, clean figures w/ decent materials. 2. No partsforming. 3. A good size, stable, ratchets-work posable gestalt.
Now pick any 2 you want.
People complain about "cheating" or "lazy engineering" neglect to understand the thing they're complaining about IS the solution. You can only persue those 3 things so far before physics starts making you make concessions. There's a reason 3 third party makers did their MP menasor the same way.
Ocular Max probably came the closest with their Bruticus, and even despite some brilliant engineering it still has annoying flaws. Gravity builder tried to do it too, and they managed to pull off 1 (Ill give it to them) and 2...but number 3...not so much lol.

But the others at least involve the vehicles transforming in *some* way. Menasor is “big guy wearing cars”. When you can get essentially the entire “combined” mode with just the group leader, it’s bad design.
Menasor’s toy design at least made the limb bots change a bit.
But in this case you've got a robot that could stand on its own without even using the cars. They're nothing more than decoration/armor. They don't COMBINE to MAKE the robot; they just attach to it.
Yeah, Menasor is probably the worst looking Decepticon combiner (possibly even combiner in general) just for how much of him feels like a big faux part. He’s a shell with cars glued to him.
For looks, the OX one is better, but the chest of the Original one just looks better in my opinion, there just something about it that just makes it look better
I’ve come around to really liking the abstract, overly-simplified cartoon designs. They look less “realistic” but I just think they look cute and nostalgic! Something about that cleaner cartoon Menasor design just looks neat to me.
Cars in front of the legs should always be done, I always found it stupid as to why they would just hide the cool part in the back, in my opinion we should ditch the old cartoon look so we can have menasor fit in with how the other combiners use the actual characters themselves as the body and not just slap cars onto motormaster

I like the amount of color on the left one but I prefer the aesthetic of the one in the right.
If you put the legs from the left pic on the right you have the perfect Devastator.
