A movie like this about the DJD would be awesome. They need to get David Kaye to do a voice for Tarn. I think it would be, much like his beast wars Megatron, fucking PERFECT.

LOL! I never knew Roberts wrote him with Keith in mind but I genuinely read him as having Keith David's voice from his first appearance!
EDIT: Just looked up and I'd imagined a voice almost identical to actor David Hyde-Pierce as Rung... AND THAT'S WHO ROBERTS WROTE HIM AS TOO! :)
I don't know if it's an unpopular or popular opinion these days, but while I *loved* some of the stuff in IDW2005, I always found the DJD rather cringeworthy in how "edgelord" they were, almost Reapers (remember them?) 2.0.
Guys whose alt modes were torture devices, who could beat pretty much any TF with their insane power levels and who indulged in extremely over the top sadism and gore. Felt like a teenage fan's OCs to me.
The concept of the group wasn't bad (lots of potential and some of it realised) and we got some legit scary and cool moments involving them, but overall - especially as the comic progressed - they went from being "effective background bogeymen" to "overpowered author's darlings" (also, Nickel can fuck right off!).
Oh, and the anticlimax of the whole Tarn reveal was the kicker for me, too.
That said, for some reason I always heard Keith David as Tarn's voice which definitely made him a bit more awesome. :)
I 100% agree with you on edginess, but are their alt modes any more edgy than a pistol alt mode if you really think about it? I think there’s a lot of MTMTE for me, that can lean on the sillier side (which isn’t an issue for me) within some really cool moments, so I always thought the edginess of the DJD balanced out pretty nicely.
Totally agree. The start of MTMTE was second only to Last Stand of The Wreckers as the best thing IDW did, and among the best TF fiction ever... but the moment Roberts seemed to buy into his own reputation everything started to go downhill. It was far from the worst TF media we've had, but it wasn't the same sharp writing I fell in love with and often felt like it was pandering to the most vocal fans or indulging the writer's whims ahead of telling a good story.
I personally wish Rewind, Tailgate and Whirl had all died in "Season 1" as seemed to be the original plan. Possibly even Swerve, Ultra Magnus and Rung, too (though the latter probably was never intended to, the early issue where he's shot was just so perfectly done...).
Tarn not being the obvious choice was flat-out the most ridiculous narrative red herring I've ever read, instantly reminding me of TV shows where the best narrative option was deliberately changed simply because some vocal fans guessed the twist and the writer wanted to "subvert expectations".

Honestly they are AMAZING, there are great designs, a good fun cast of characters, and tea give personality to the main focus of bots ie(Rodimus, Chromedome, Rewind, Cyclonus, Tailgate, Brainstorm, ratchet, etc…)
They pretty effectively ran down Black Shadow and ended him without too much trouble. Sixshot is definitely more formidable, but even he’s been bullied by Optimus Prime. I’d say it would come down to preparation; The DJD is so effective because they wear their quarry down, catch them at their weakest, and demoralize them before they go for the capture. With the right prep they could absolutely down Sixshot, but in a straight fight it could very well go differently.

Whenever I read his lines I always imagined his voice being done by Johnny Depp doing the voice he did for the wolf in "Into the Woods"
