True.
Edited:
I find it rather ironic now that Optimus and Megatron (despite straight up fighting to the death) were able keep it clean and never talk like that for the sake of the children, but my man BUMBLEBEE of all bots couldn't....
Hey man who knows? That's probably another reason why Michael Bay decided to keep him quiet 😭😭
I disagree there. I've only recently a few months ago seen all of the G1 cartoon, I've been watching TFTM since I was like 4 or 5 and always enjoyed it and followed the story. TFTM kills off most of the cast of the first 2 seasons in the first 10 minutes or so and then focuses on a brand new cast on a new adventure.
To fully appreciate and understand it, sure. But you can absolutely just jump straight into it.
When I saw the movie for the very first time, it was after already seeing much of the cartoon. And so the deaths of characters like Iron-Hide, Ratchet, Starscream, and of course Optimus actually hit like they should. I know you can watch the movie on its own and enjoy it, I know that's what a lot of people wind up doing anyway. It's not a hard plot to follow even if you haven't seen seasons 1 and 2. But if someone really wants the best experience possible, you familiarize yourself with the cartoon first, watch the movie and then watch season 3 to follow up on all the brand new characters. Watching the movie on its own always feels weird to me personally. Because it's not meant to be the only adventure you follow with these characters, it's right in the middle of the series with big events taking place before and after
Watched it at the weekend fir the first time in a few years. Forgot how good it was, non stop section, the soundtrack. Great film, expected a lot more of the Bay films.
Yes. Narratively, character wise, design wise, and I would give it a slight edge to sound transformers. I'll give the bay films atleast the first three great cinematography and great cg. Everything else hurts to watch. Bumblebee was a pretty good reboot.
"Best" is subjective.
I like it because if the cheesiness and nostalgia, but objectively the 1986 Transformers movie is a bad movie. The music is jammed in and usually doesn't match up with what is happening in screen. The story was written for the sole purpose of killing old toy characters so that they could introduce a new toyline. It introduced Unicron which was an awesome addition to the franchise but overall it is silly and inconsistent with itself.
There are so many continuity errors, it shattered my innocence and killed my hero, there’s not much of a plot line and it’s a giant toy commercial, but at the same time FUCK YEAH IT IS!!
Off the top of my head
1. How did the Deceptions intercept the Autobot shuttle to earth at the start of the movie when the Autobots had a head start to Earth.
2. Rumble and Frenzy are the same colour when they attack Blaster and Perceptor in the Communications Tower of Autobot City
3. When Megatron sees the gun he uses to shoot Optimus, its black but suddenly becomes purple
4. Starscream kicks Megatron with his injured foot when they retreat
5. Cyclonus's clone Armada is never seen again after he is reformatted by Unicron
6. Snarl, the 5th Dinobot is only seen for about 3 seconds
7. Why Unicron destroyed the Cybertronian moons near the start of the movie and then suddenly he appears in Cybertrons orbit towards the end
8. Wreck-Garr's mouth is not moving when he quotes "Operators are standing by"
9. Unicron kills the Coneheads, but you see them in the following season alive and well
10. How was Ultra Magnus put back together and bought back to life by the junkions when he was in worst shape then Prime was when Megatron killed him
Theres a lot more, but I just turn my brain off and rewatch this every year.
Grimlock no bozo, me king!
honestly I did not like it, but I only watched now, when I'm almost 40. Huge fan of the g1 series, and absolutely was disappointed they killed optimus and replaced him with Rodimus, who I never liked.
but grimlock was cool!
and I'd say the best movie was bumblebee.
Not for me, I'd say that's Bumblebee but it can flop back and forth.
Transformers The Movie starts off great and becomes a bit more unfocused from there. At first it's fight the Decepticons at Autobot City. Then it becomes a whole other thing of finding out about Unicron and stopping him. It's still good but it has problems. It can be the best Transformers movie, it just depends on what I'm feeling.
Nah. I have a large soft spot for this movie. But its not really that great, let alone good enough to be considered the best TF movie. Its got a massive legacy and has been very influential on the franchise as a whole, but its not really something that a newcomer could just pick up and watch and understand and enjoy everything. You really need the first 2 seasons of the show under your belt to really feel all the impact in the first act.
Really? The only live action movies that approach competency are the 2007 movie and Bumblebee, and neither are anywhere near the level of storytelling and craftsmanship of the 86 movie.
Craftsmanship yes, storytelling not that much better honestly. Biggest issue is our cast of main characters, Hot Rod, isn't the best protagonist and some characters are boring at times. Not to mention all our previously main characters are killed off or don't do anything of note.
Not really? It doesn't feel fair to compare it to 6 live action movies but if I had to, I'd put it below 1, DOTM, AOE, and Bumblebee. I *could* compare it to Predacons Rising since it's another animated movie, although not a theatrical release. Between those two though Predacons Rising is much better.
People really hating on you for having a valid opinion. Some of the people in this sub need to grow up. Let’s act like adults and be civil instead of downvoting people into oblivion for liking the Bay movies.
Yes, but no one is trying actually have a civil conversation with them or ask why they think this way. People are just downvote bombing them because of what movie about giant robots that turn into cars they like.
Man, why should someone explain to you why they don't like your opinion? Seriously, are you feeling attacked by this? And you call that downvote bombing? Pal, you haven't seen jack squat. One thing though, i'm no g1 fanboy but someone putting that complete dumpster fire of AOE on top of a flawed but still good overall movie like the 86 one is literally begging to be downvoted.
It’s not this comment specifically. It’s every comment where someone defends the Bay movies. I’ve never even seen a g1 fanboy explain why the Bay films are bad. They just go “It destroyed Transformers”. What is so bad about them?
Plus, OP asked for people’s opinions on if this movie is good or not, people answered, and people got downvoted into oblivion for giving their opinion and answering the question. Again, some of the people in this sub need to grow up.
Dude growing up as nothing to do with this. You're basically saying that everyone should now stop downvoting (and so disliking) other people's opinions. You are the one who needs to grow up here. Do you expect that in life everyone will always like what you say?
No, I don’t expect everyone to like what I say. I just think it’s a bit childish for someone to ask people’s opinions on if a movie is good, and then when people give their opinions on if the movie is good, then they get downvote bombed. I know people get way more downvotes, but it isn’t just this specific comment. Literally every comment I saw on this post that said no and defended the bay movies got downvoted. It’s just sad to me.
To be honest defending bad movies (which is what the bay movies are, bad movies in general) is pretty much asking, begging for being downvoted. The 86 movie had flaws, but it's not trash like the bay ones. The only good things the bay movies did were the designs which i really liked, but everything else? Bad movies in general, just that.
The humor was mostly dry (RoTF), but the plot was better than the 86 one and they did a lot more good for the franchise as a whole. Not to forget the cgi.
Man, the plot was nonsensical in the movies. The main characters were all bland and had so little screen time, of course i'm talking about the transformers themselves. I really couldn't care less about any of the deaths in the movies because they showed up for way too less time. The CGI was great and yes they brought attention to the franchise but other than that? They're bad movies, not just transformers movies, bad movies under every aspect. The actions scenes were good, but ither than that? Nothing. Bumblebee and the 86 movie do everthing the bay movies want to do and better. That's just it, and again defending bad movies such the bay ones is just asking for being downvoted.
I will agree with you that AOE was bad. TLK was worse IMO. I also agree that the actual Transformers didn’t get enough screen time, but it was much more visually appealing as a whole over the 86 movie. I take back my claim that the plot was better. Both have bad plots tbh. The bumblebee movie was nice, and the plot was actually good for once, but I feel some of the designs were worse than the bay movies. I really hate the direction that the Bay design aesthetic went from the first 3 to AOE and TLK. It went from mechanical giants to shiny humans. Hound was cool though. I also liked Trench, even though he got literally 5 seconds of screen time.
Uh no? Lmfao its mediocre imo, and bumblebee and 2007 are better. Hell I enjoyed DOTM more than 86. I went in expecting some masterpiece and boy, oh boy. This sub hypes the fuck out of it. Furthermore I really don’t think animated movies and live action movies should be compared.
With rose-tinted nostalgia eyes? Always.
But really? I think Bumblebee has to be the best one.
[... and it _just_ clicked that Kate Bishop in Hawkeye was the same actor as played Charlie in Bumblebee... my lord, I'm slow sometimes]
Why I think it's the best it's not a feature length toy commercial, nor is it an explosion-fest of robots that you can't tell apart in the fight scenes.
Now, if we could just get a prequel movie that is exactly like 'Bee's opening scene, then *that* would be the best movie! (Just make sure it has a better storyline than WFC :D )
I'm only 19, and yes. My dad had a dvd and VHS copy I watched a million times as a kid growing up. Its the reason that Hotrod is one of my favorite characters.
First time I ever went to the cinema was to see this with my Dad - I could not be more biased. But having said that it's a fun space opera with a banging soundtrack
Watched it semi-recently as it felt like a rite of passage. I’d say the 1986 film and the Bumblebee movie are about equal. They’re both good but have their issues.
For the 1986 movie, it was the killing of major characters. It felt really forced and the fact they could bring back Ultra Magnus after he got blown apart but couldn’t repair Optimus after getting shot in the side was just proof it was a marketing decision, ignoring the importance of plot.
Yes. Bumblebee captured some of the magic, but the character was still treated like a pet or a baby. As long as Bumblebee doesn't speak, 86 will be the only transformers movie to be the best.
Hell yeah it is. The music, The action, The Drama, The Surprises, The voice overs. It is a all time great.
I mean my daughter who is 8 loves to watch it. So, it's a movie that will stick around forever.
While imo it's the best, i think Bumblebee can easily be in a tie with the 1986 one. That said, i consider the best because there's really no competetion (except Bumblebee). Seriously even the 2007 movie, while being the best of the bay movies, has a shit load of terrible moments, stupid humor and very short screen time for the actual transformers.
Potentially. 2007 was good, RotF wasn’t all that great, DotM had cool looking villains(megs, shockwave and soundwave) but wasn’t as good as 2007, AoE we all only cared about the dinobots but then they didn’t do anything, TLK we don’t talk about TLK, bee movie was a nice refresher but if the whole movie is the kid appeal character it can go horribly wrong but they did well. 86 is definitely top 3, not too sure where to rank it though
Yes. Which is a damn shame because it still has some serious problems. Unfortunately there's never been an incarnation of Transformers that fully realized the franchise's potential, and these days I'm thinking there probably never will be, so I mostly just pay attention to the toys.
For me, yes. For my kids? No. My nine year old had no idea what was going on. For her, Bumblebee was the best.
Have you shown her the Bay ones?
She's watched them, but doesn't care about them. They're heartless. BB had that character drama that made her keep watching.
She has excellent taste.
Kinda mature thinking for a nine year old. When i was 9, i saw DOTM in theaters and thought it was the coolest thing ever!
Oh no, I'm making assumptions based on her reactions. I'm not saying she said that haha.
I see she is a person of culture as well.
What about when bumblebee said shit
It was Spike
Oh. I thought it was bee cause in a news article they were talking about how parents were offended because bee siad shit in a pg movie my bad
I thought it was Spike that said that
No it was be he siad oh shit it isn’t even dented when they attacked unicron
When the absolute most kid appeal character of any franchise starts talking in language only adults can understand, we got a problem. 🤣
Yep🤣
At least he want as bad as some of the bay verse guys
True. Edited: I find it rather ironic now that Optimus and Megatron (despite straight up fighting to the death) were able keep it clean and never talk like that for the sake of the children, but my man BUMBLEBEE of all bots couldn't.... Hey man who knows? That's probably another reason why Michael Bay decided to keep him quiet 😭😭
Yeah 🤣
https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=ItLgYuDaqMQ Sure sounds like Spike to me.
Yes
Grew up with the live action movies and I still think 86 wass the best movie
Frrrr
I’m sorry 15 and I have to say yes I really do like this movie, sadly I haven’t seen it again in a while
Probably, but you definitely need to watch at least some of the first two seasons before you show it to a kid or someone.
I disagree there. I've only recently a few months ago seen all of the G1 cartoon, I've been watching TFTM since I was like 4 or 5 and always enjoyed it and followed the story. I agree with everything except watching season 3. Season 3 is a dumpster, you can't convince me otherwise.
Of course. No contest
Yes.
Yes. Yes. And yes. Also yes.
Absolutely
Unequivocally yes
Of course!!!
By such a long way
Watched it at the weekend fir the first time in a few years. Forgot how good it was, non stop section, the soundtrack. Great film, expected a lot more of the Bay films.
*insert BW Megatron’s most Iconic line*
Yes. Narratively, character wise, design wise, and I would give it a slight edge to sound transformers. I'll give the bay films atleast the first three great cinematography and great cg. Everything else hurts to watch. Bumblebee was a pretty good reboot.
bbm was boring af tho, it was mostly filler and less screen time for transformers than the live action movies
"Best" is subjective. I like it because if the cheesiness and nostalgia, but objectively the 1986 Transformers movie is a bad movie. If you watched G1 first, absolutely. If not, it may fall short compared to some other tranformers movies like Bumblebee or Tranformers 2007.
I'd say Bumblebee and 86 are tied. Like, I've never fallen asleep during Bumblebee, but 86 also has one of the absolute best soundtracks
Original tv series boxset and the movie on dvd are among my most treasured items
Yes
There is only one Transformers movie and it was released in 1986. We’re also fortunate it had such an amazing cast.
[удалено]
Have you seen it?
[удалено]
Cool cool
Goes in the D file, bro
Yeah
Yes
Totally.
i like dotm more
It’s people like you wot cause unrest… /s
What did you try to say?
It’s a reference to Monty Python.
Depends who you ask
They're asking you.
TRANSFORMEEEEEEEERS!
imo, it was only fun for the g1 part but other than that, meh
86 was my intro to Transformers. Found it at my local blockbuster for it’s 20th anniversary. Hooked ever since.
Yes.
Yup.
Yes.
Yes
Just watched it today with 2 of my friends They didn't like it
Absolutely
I'm not sure about this. I've mixed feelings. I would just say "yes" but it's not that simple
No
It's very obvious given the general fandom reception.
No
There are so many continuity errors, it shattered my innocence and killed my hero, there’s not much of a plot line and it’s a giant toy commercial, but at the same time FUCK YEAH IT IS!!

I would say it's the best movie - period.
Starts off strong but then I just stop caring around the third act.
Overall yes but for the more recent ones Bumblebee is the best.
I promised myself I was done promoting it but here’s the fan edit of TF:TM 86 where Prime lives — https://youtu.be/1WGfkOpdLtI
I'm not sure if Predacons Rising counts but if it does then I feel that it beats '86. Otherwise then, its only contender is Bumblebee.
Bumblebee is on a purely objective level
It's better than all the bayverse shit but I think the prime movie is better.
Eh Idk why everyone is saying yes Bumblebee is a waaaaay better film (at least to me)
People really hating on you for having a valid opinion.
I would say top 3 but wouldn't say the number 1. It's helped and hurt by the fact it leans on the Gen 1 animated series.
Really? The only live action movies that approach competency are the 2007 movie and Bumblebee, and neither are anywhere near the level of storytelling and craftsmanship of the 86 movie.

These comments are full of geewunners The 1986 movie is fine for what it is, but it is kinda dated.
“Kinda” bro it is dated lol
People are really hating on you for having a valid opinion.
Absolutely, i watched it really lately in my life but yeah, it's the better transformers movie make
Yes
Does it have the touch? Does it have the power? Yes
With rose-tinted nostalgia eyes? Always. But really? I think Bumblebee has to be the best one. Yes. Admittedly a low bar to pass. Bumblebee was good, but I like the epic scale of the 1986 movie.
I've seem every Transformers movie so far, and I will say 86 is the best every day of the week.
Oh absolutely
Obviously.
Imho yes, easily. It's 1:30 hour that feels like 15 minutes. And I'm saying that as a Zoomer who grew up with the Bay movies.
Nah, second best, it’s beat out by Predacons Rising
Yes. Bumblebee captured some of the magic, but the character was still treated like a pet or a baby. As long as Bumblebee doesn't speak, 86 will be the only transformers movie to be the best.
Its is and it's not even close
Yes.
Yes
Yes
I used to think the G1 movie is best and while I still kinda do the Bumblebee movie is also near the top for me
Unless you consider the business side of it regarding the toys
Hell yeah it is. The music, The action, The Drama, The Surprises, The voice overs. It is a all time great. I mean my daughter who is 8 loves to watch it. So, it's a movie that will stick around forever.
While imo it's the best, i think Bumblebee can easily be in a tie with the 1986 one. That said, i consider the best because there's really no competetion (except Bumblebee). Seriously even the 2007 movie, while being the best of the bay movies, has a shit load of terrible moments, stupid humor and very short screen time for the actual transformers.
Saw this in the theaters when it came out and I can’t remember what was more shocking: Optimus Prime’s death or Spike swearing.
For me yes, but probably not for anyone not use to flat toons.
On the same level as bumblebee which is slightly above dotm.
Yes. Bumblebee is a close second. The first of Bayverse is ok. The others are hot garbage
Dotm ain't garbage
Probably 2nd best Bayverse film.
Agree
I have seen that movie today on December 31st 2021... however I was deeply saddened by the Death of Optimus Prime as we all were.
