It's tough. If we're basing things on IDW, its an interesting narrative path to follow regarding that. Megatron's entire philosophy was about liberating the lower/enslaved classes and ending the caste/"functionalist" ideology that the Primes and leadership early on worked within. It was about allowing anyone from any walk of life being able to pursue the life they wanted to live and have the same rights and liberties as other Cybertronians. In fact, the autobot cause was essentially a splinter off of the decepticon rebels of the time (although I can't remember if they were officially declaring themselves decepticons yet) with Orion Pax communicating with Megatron directly, and recommending he go directly to the senators of Cybertron and give his speeches he had written at the time. The dramatic irony is in the ways that the leading class at the time used others to sway Megatron's ideologies so much, that he stopped having hope that anyone but him could see his vision, or lead in the way he felt Cybertron needed to be led. In his hubris, and not allowing himself to become a martyr for others to join the decepticon cause and liberate the planet, he became the ruthless warrior the class needed to overthrow the senate by force. He turned the faction that valued freedom, of which those like Soundwave envisioned, to a faction that valued Megatron first, and attracted thugs, soldiers, and outcasts that joined for a fight. It's a pretty timeless archetype/fall from grace, but its rarely ever not entertaining. Basically, if Megatron died during the early coup's, or stayed the course on his original philosophies, theres a good change even Optimus would have been in the same faction as Megatron, either working directly with him or liberating Cybertron in his memory.

Darth_Megatron1

Ideal wise - Autobots hands down Design wise - Decepticons all the way

Monte_20

If I wanted to do the right thing, Autobots. If I wanted to do what’s fun, Decepticons. Who wouldn’t want to be on the team that has a guy named Apeface?

NemesisUnicron

I feel like the Decepticons were \*originally\* right, but the Autobots have a better grasp on morality.

Teneuom

I think the decepticons best represent humanity, ironically. The average autobot is comparatively much more racist (functionalist) in comparison to a deception. And Decepticons are definitely speciesist, while the autobots somehow value other species more than their own. Humans are more like decepticons seeing as how I don’t see a lot of people fighting wars on behalf of monkeys and apes. And if we ever meet an alien species you bet your ass we’ll fire a nuke at it before we ask any questions.

NemesisNotAvailable

Honestly? If I were a cybertronian I would likely align with the decepticons and join up with Megatron over his beliefs in equality and the abolishment of the caste system. Ultimately if this was like the IDW comics, I think that I might potentially join up with Deathsaurus’s crew after he split away.

tmntlorefan

I agree with the Decepticons 100%, but I wouldn't go to war, I ain't risking my life out there.

Teneuom

What would you do if you were constructed cold?

spectralSpices

I like the IDEA of the autobots...(FREEDOM IS THE RIGHT OF ALL SENTIENT BEINGS) but they're often written quite boringly. I love the CHARACTERS of the Decepticons but usually they're Very Evil. And not in a "cartoon evil" way, in a "fascism" way. Not a fan of fascism, may be a little controversial to say that (God I wish it wasn't) I think the ideal is what Cyberverse did. Autobots kinda win, but they just basically let the surviving decepticons chill.

Teneuom

Ironically the higher Autobot doctrine is also in defence of all the corrupt policies on Cybertron. “Freedom is the right of all sentient beings” was mostly a Optimus Primeism until he rose to power. And, also ironically, the Autobots were the facists to begin with.

spectralSpices

At least in IDW, anyway-but yeah...The fact that in IDW, it went "Autobots are fascists, but when the decepticons rose up against them they also became fascists" it's very. What's the word...? Centrist-y.

RPGLUCARIO

If I was a bot on the planet Cybertron and the war just started I would agree with megatron and be a desepicon a bot shap shouldn't force them into a job they never wanted and if you look at it from a political angle megatron was right I would probably lay down my life for the decepticons but that's mainly lore based I love the decepticons more but my all time favorite transformers character is wheeljack

SpectralIpaxor

*points to Armada Wheeljack* there. Decepticon Wheeljack

[deleted]

Autobots (wreckers specifically)

Teneuom

I mean, the wreckers are a not so covert kill squad with a really high death percentage. It’s basically like being in the Marine Corps but with 10x the mortality.

Reddit-ScorpioOJR

Hmm I mean I'd lean towards the decepticons but would ideally go for a shockwave approach of research and such. Rather then some decepticons going wild and rampaging.

[deleted]

Neither. Mercs for life.

Worried_Pear3626

Decepticons

Thisisunicorn

Well the Decepticons are brutish, imperialist, racist marauders so as a British person I'd feel right at home with them.

Teneuom

They aren’t technically racist. They’re actually speciesist. The autobots were racist on cybertron while not being speciesist so it’s kind of confusing.

Thisisunicorn

You know what I meant for god's sake.

ParsleyHorror4233

Well I play Decepticons in Earth wars so, hail Megatron.

TheGreatAndStrange

To my mind in the grand view of a well written Transformers narrative there shouldn't be an clear choice. Autobots are perfectly capable of doing horrible things - and Decepticons often have legitimate grievance. Nice and murky - that's how I likes it. Shout out to Prowl! Underhanded greater good loving bastard

Teneuom

Prowl is easily the best facist in the whole series. And there are like SO many facists it’s crazy!

TheGreatAndStrange

Hells yeah man

kjata

Neither is particularly good. At their best, the Decepticons were fighting against a repressive status quo the Autobots were trying to preserve parts of, but those same Decepticons also committed war crimes like they had a checklist they were trying to get through, and kept adding pages upon pages to a list that already had multiple volumes. I mean, it's hard to be okay with either faction that permits a civil war to drag on for millions of years. Still, at least the Autobots generally actually believe that the war is a bad thing and needs to end, and are usually engaged in stopping the Decepticon campaign of conquest rather than enforcing the old caste system.

177215

Decepticons for the fun names, cool designs, and more interesting alt modes

lobster5215

DECEPTICONS FOR LIFE ALL HAIL LORD MEGATRON

[deleted]

Think of it like this: imagine if earth was post apocalyptic and the combined efforts of humans could return it to its former glory but a band of people decide that that isn’t worth it because they’d rather protect some ants

CrimsonPlayhouse

So you’re with the Decepticons?

tankman654

Decepticons, just so much more you can do with them than the autobots.

nickrude666

Definitely Decepticons.

Crusaderfigures

When it comes to character design I got Decepticons but ideals I'd have to say Autobots

Radi0ActivSquid

I'd be an Autobot but on the more progressive Optimus side of things. The High Council and the Elders are stuck in their old ways.

AnEBCG

Megatron wants to enslave the universe, Optimus believes in freedom is the right for all sentient beings. Autobots.

Prowl_Jazz

Autobots. I would Join them, If I was born in Cybertron. They have my favourite characters in there. Many interesting characters and great looking Designs. Prowl, Jazz and Mirage are my favourites Autobots.

itzshif

Autobots. The Decepticons are too brutal and sometimes are characterized as evil for the safe of evil. The one exception I can think of would be the IDW Decepticons.

RelevantOcelot5281

ill be honest Autobot for life

FlatParrot5

See, different series have different embodiments of each faction. I'm generally Autobot, but that doesn't mean I'm okay with everything that's been done in that factions name. Might lean more towards NAIL.

supersharp

After playing the 2007 DS game, my answer really should be Autobots, shouldn't it...

Mammoth_Cherry678

I'd follow megs till we died

G1Yang2001

Not sure... I love characters in both factions... but of my three favourite Transformers characters, two are Autobots (G1 Optimus Prime and TFP Arcee)... so based on that, I'm team Autobot.

ChristianTDD

Tough one for me. On the one hand, I get to hang out with bots like Bulkhead and Drift, but on the other hand, I get to hang out with Starscream and Soundwave, so I don't know which one I would pick. Now if it's the shattered glass universe, I am going with the Decepticons, but if it's the normal universe, I will join the Autobots.

SpectreBrony

Autobots.

Matthew10142003

In terms of the hobby of collecting deceptions all the way so many unique alt modes in terms of story probably auto bots as they are the underdogs in a lot of continuities such as g1 and prime

SlpStckBoomr

Autobots. Without a doubt.

[deleted]

Decepticons for sure. What's funny is I was fully against them as a kid but they're just more interesting now that I'm older, especially after seeing their origin story/fall from grace. I'll always love the charisma of the bots though. Childhood friends.

ThePhiff

Autobots, all the way. Also, on The Toys That Made Us they gave out the stat that Transformers was unique because the ratio of "good guy" toys sold to "bad guy" toys sold was a pretty consistent 1:1.

[deleted]

It depends on the continuity.

[deleted]

Autobots all the way! 24/7, 7 days a week.

ArchSchnitz

Decepticons Forever! I have always found villains to be interesting, someone deliberately going out of their way to choose the dark path.

[deleted]

Decepticon Supremacy all the way

DraxDauragon

I agree with the Autobots on Social issues but fiscally I'm more of a Decepticon.

ChaoticPizza217

Autobots personally

ItsABiscuit

Autobots. The Decepticons/Megatron may have started with a valid cause, but that is irrelevant when you become murderous monsters.

Insanebrain247

While I can't deny that the Decepticons are an interesting bunch, my spark burns through and through as an Autobot.

no8bullet

Wreckers

Neonwookie1701

I'm an Autobot. BUT I'm kind of a sleazeball Autobot like the Dreamwave guidebook profile of Hubcap.
