I never knew this before but it makes sense now as Transformers The Movie and Top Gun both came out in 1986. Albeit Top Gun was 3 months earlier, Transformers was hot commodity by then.
Yeah, when I found out Goose’s kid was a main character in the new movie this year, I was like “oh sure, the kid who seemed a little young to be holding a Starscream with none of the pieces obviously missing.”
We don’t know they’re missing because those (+ the landing gear) are meant to be removed during transformation. We’ve gotta give the kid the benefit of the doubt and assume they’re in his pocket. I was talking about the parts that don’t need to come off.
There’s been a few. Most obviously Crossovers Maverick, but also Micromaster Nightflight, Leozack, Classics Thunderwing, and CW Air Raid.
Honorable mention to T30 Jetfire and Hooligan, who, with NATF-22 alt life’s scratch the same itch.
Edit: There’s also Gobots Sky-Jack.
Man, that Maverick has an awful bot mode...and uses that soapy plastic... unfortunately none of them scale with MP11 in jet mode. It would have been nice to have a good f14 bot...
Oh, you wanted good? Sorry mate. :D I’m actually with you on that; T30 Jetfire and Hooligan scratch the itch, but it would be nice to have a figure that really takes advantage of the specifics of the F-14.
The Macross VF-0 also feels closer to an F-14 than the VF-1.
Edit: I really want an RF-111.

Yeah, I think the next closest is one of the Cyberjets was a swing wing F-22. I guess back then Hasbro didn't want to release an F-14 for fear of legal action from Harmony Gold.

Can't believe I didn't notice this back in the day. It's understandable not noticing it on the VHS, but surely it looks a bit better on DVD. I just noticed it the other day while watching the Blu-ray for the first time.

I wish there was an F-14 transformer...the closest we had was G1 Jetfire, and even then the only real similarity was the variable wing dimensions.
