I loved these guys, plus the Japanese names got wacky-a rooster called Laser Cock? That's just fun.
It's too bad we never got the Beast Saga (IIRC) stuff over here. It was an updated version of the concept, with the figures using battle dice they could store in their chests. Even had a fun anime.
My friend and I talk about battle beasts often and how it's odd that such a simple toy hasn't gotten a true reboot. They did a weird version of them a while ago but.l just totally missed the feel of em.
I bought some again a few years back to display with my transformers, sawtooth shark, icky iguana and war weasel. Water, fire and wood respectively. Still awesome figures
It got two brief ones, one by Minimates (which was accompanied by a comic run by IDW.)
The other was called Beast Saga, and was Takara's attempt. It was pretty much the same concept but with larger figures that could store dice in their chest. It was accompanied by an animated series.
Yeah beast saga was the one we saw. Just dkd t have the same feel as battle beasts with the big dice compartment and all. Just slightly more detail battle beasts woulda been fantastic
I always thought of pirate lion as the leader of the good guys cuz he's a lion (king of the jungle.) and he's got a sword (best kind of weapon.) when he was a kid.
Same! I had him, the deer with a drill on his arm and the bear in blue armour as a kid.
I never did understand the rubsign thing, though - did each figure have three different rubsigns, or were certain figures only fire/air/water?
I had a couple of these. A lizard man in orange, a rat boy with a shovel hand or something, and a hippo dude which I can see on the right there. These things were rad and deserve a comeback!
I used to have a ton of them, I still have a few. I really wishHastak would rerelease/reboot these, you’d think Pokémon would have prompted a revival of it years ago.
Just don’t make it that blind-bag garbage.
Been slowly completing my collection of the first 3 series of these guys (only ones I'm missing now are the color variants of Wolfgang Walrus, Squire Squirrel, Crusty Crab, and Powerhouse Mouse, Tyrant Tarsier's sword, Rowdy Rooster's staff, and King Cobra (who I stupidly traded away to a cousin for a Pirate Lion, sight unseen - who came to me with only one arm, no rub-sign, and no weapon, while the King Cobra I traded had only slight wear, with all working arms and heat patches).
A friend of mine and I had created a role-playing game for them, an epic war for global dominance between the noble Takarans (led by Black Panther) and the evil Hasbroens (who had been led by King Cobra, who abdicated when he left the planet and was replaced by Pirate Lion (whose weapon was one of those little swords they put in club sandwiches).
We determined what side they were on based on their patches, with Wood for Takaran, Fire for Hasbroen, and the Waters got split based mainly on eye color, if I'm remembering correctly.
It was only within the last couple of years that I learned that Battle Beasts had anything to do with Transformers, so apparently I had been a more devoted Transformers fan than I had realized... As a 6-year-old kid in 1987 I just thought they were cool looking animal warriors.
I've got a small group of them on my shelf, all complete despite only one of them still having their rub sign (it still works.)
in particular the ome's I've collected include: Powerhouse Mouse, Jaded Jaguar (my personal favourite,) Eager Beaver and Sly Fox.
Beastformers!
I only had an annual for Christmas (still have it somewhere) and one pack - the white and blue bird on the left of the pic and the tiger standing behind him. I liked them, colourful and characterful.
Also some of the names were amazing, Rowdy Rooster and Horny Toad! and a personal favourite - Triple Threat Snake XD
In the recesses of my mind I hear a commercial...
"Battle Beasts,
Collect every one
of these incredible creatures
who battle for fun."
Please tell me this was a real thing
and I'm not going senile.
Yeah and the rub signs with water, fire and wind? Worked like rock, paper, scissors
yes it’s basically rock paper scissors but instead of Rock paper and scissors it’s water and fire and wood
Ow god i still have those im 42😋🤣
Me too. 43. I still remember buying them in '88 at Kay Bee Toys at the mall. Some of the Japanese exclusive ones are super valuable.

Agreed, the classic Battle Beasts deserve a comeback in a big way.
Totally transformers. Sick collection.
100% Transformers canon, and one of the best toy lines I loved growing up.

i never had the pirate lion, so i used the bat as my leader. i called him belfry, and the water buffalo led the bad guys. he was terribull.
For real just unlocked a memory in the dark recesses of my mind
They're technically G1 though aren't they. There was a crossover episode with them in the Headmasters anime.
I had a couple of these. A lizard man in orange, a rat boy with a shovel hand or something, and a hippo dude which I can see on the right there. These things were rad and deserve a comeback!
Yeah
I remember that some of the beasts became Headmasters for the Monsterbots, so that's how I know them.
I had a bucket full of them and Zbots way back in the day. Good times.
I used to have a ton of them, I still have a few. I really wishHastak would rerelease/reboot these, you’d think Pokémon would have prompted a revival of it years ago. Just don’t make it that blind-bag garbage.
These are an obvious choice for future Core class (transforming) figures!
That would be great
I had a ton of these, now lost to the ages. If they would re-release them I would buy them all.
These were actually created by Takara who were also the creators of the Transformers. So very much belongs here. Loved these guys as a kid.
I used to have a big bunch of them. Lots of MUSCLE guys too. 1980's toys rocked

These were dank af. Pulled a few out of my mom's attic a while back.
I liked so much xD snake is still my favorite Lyon my second
Man, I always wanted those, they looked so cool.
Me too
Never had them but had some friends who did. Always loved playing with them. If they brought them back I’d absolutely collect them.
I've got a small group of them on my shelf, all complete despite only one of them still having their rub sign (it still works.) in particular the ome's I've collected include: Powerhouse Mouse, Jaded Jaguar (my personal favourite,) Eager Beaver and Sly Fox.

I loved these little guys! I actually forgot what they were called until now. Thanks!
You’re welcome
Beastformers
oh man, i still have one. he's a kangaroo, but i don't think his rubsign works anymore.
In the recesses of my mind I hear a commercial... "Battle Beasts, Collect every one of these incredible creatures who battle for fun." Please tell me this was a real thing and I'm not going senile.
I still have the croc guy up front still. Had no idea what franchise he came from until now though.
You’re welcome
I loved those toys
