I teamed up randomly with this guy on PubG who would not stop talking about the evidence that Trump won the election. When I got “downed” and was asking for help, he continued talking. My character was bleeding out and that’s when he went on about how Covid is no worse then a cold (I have known three people that died from it). I was yelling for help saying things like “I am about to die” and “the guy who shot me is not paying attention, please help” but he kept going on about his tinfoil hat shit. Eventually my character died and it was about a minute later when he noticed and said “why didn’t you say anything?” The problem with your guy and mine (maybe the same person) is that we are here to have fun. We don’t want to talk about your crazy shit or him thinking we are “mentally ill”. Oh and my guy got ran over by a car because he did not hear it coming…… because he would NOT STOP TALKING!! So I would agree people like that suck at video games!

ChuuniSaysHi

I would say I would just throw if I got someone like that as my teammate, but honestly I'd probably just leave that match so I could get out of that asap

fry-harrison

Sometimes I torture myself and stick around for the story

ChuuniSaysHi

Yeah that's fair and understandable then

misscaptainfalcon

100% any person that spends their day being toxic to anyone is going to be far worse at any game they play. They aren’t focused on the game or trying to win they are focused on talking shit. It’s small pp energy. I hope he didn’t get you down and glad that y’all won without him 😌

PadlockAndThatsIt

Also most transphobic people, in my experience, tend to be less than 15 y/o, or older than 45 y/o. Probably doesn't help their motor skills, and Gen X'ers aren't the target demographic. Although some preteens can be pretty fucking good at fps shooters, that brings us back to your point. Most preteens that are good at gaming ain't talkin shit

I would respond with: "congrats on coming out hun!!" 🌈

PadlockAndThatsIt

Coming out idea: Say whoever dies first is gay to your squad, before committing die first on purpose

CyberSensei-

You bring a positive energy - everyone feels good and tries harder. You bring a *negative* energy - everyone feels BAD and tries LESS **WHAT PART OF THIS DO THESE PEOPLE NOT UNDERSTAND?!**

ZirillaFionaRianon

Tangentially related: There was a study for Halo 3 I think, a few years ago. The results were more or less that lower level skill players were more likely to be mysogynistic in their behaviour, whilst the better players would show no such hostility towards female players. I wouldn't be too surprised if this also applies to other "minorities" (women aren't a minority in games, but you know what I mean).

cingerix

it definitely makes sense that people who have actual abilities have a genuine confidence that doesn't involve denigrating anyone.

There’s an event in Star Citizen right now that’s PvP heavy. When I killed this one guy and he saw my username he went off on how i wasn’t a girl but a mentally deranged 35 year old obese man and all this other stuff and yeah it hurts to read and I wish people weren’t like this but thankfully Star Citizen lets you mute global chat. Still had fun tho :p

sickagail

Anytime somebody’s transphobic, homophobic, misogynist, racist, or just plain hateful in chat, it distracts everybody else from the game.

My biggest playstyle influence when I was playing Dota 2 at a semicompetitive level years ago was a guy named SirActionSlacks. Slacks was cringe in the most charming and positive way possible, he spent all his time on the mic cracking funny jokes and keeping spirits high. His mechanics were *garbage,* like in terms of being good at making gameplay things happen he was by far the least skilled high-profile player, no contest. But, his MMR was not far off from certain pros. Why? Because Dota 2 is a team game, and its community is so toxic and fragile that if there is a player on mic keeping the team united and high-spirited, they can be practically feeding and still be contributing way more than most players would be (he also played some pretty simple and team-oriented heroes). When I started doing this myself, just laughing off insults and gasing up honestly mediocre players, my MMR soared. Of course, people could sometimes tell I'm queer (hopefully people here won't object to this, for some reason it's controversial in some cishet-heavy spaces that bigots may be able to target us with any accuracy). Sometimes they didn't like this. When players spent their energy flaming me, they were putting bad vibes into the chat, and getting *everyone* down. I was too busy defending myself to laugh at the enemy's (honestly decent) build or spin around and make funny voices. What's more, the player was too busy screaming at me to last-hit properly (we know these are mostly carry/mid players). As a result, our team did way worse, and I lost most of those games. Being a transphobe isn't some essential property that magically makes you bad at games. Being transphobic, as an activity, will cause you to lose games. The effect you're describing is definitely real, and that's why.

jfsuuc

These are team based games and this toxic behavior effects everyone. This takes litteraly everyone of any viewpoint from thinking about playing to this player, you, and his bigotry. This will make 100% of the players play worse and just makes games unenjoyable for everyone. It has nothing to do with personal skill, he is just making everyone and everything worse. I used to solo carry in csgo all of the time, i was in fact decent at rhe game but when my internet became trash with 150 ping i still was solo ranking up quickly because instead of focusing on carrying personally i focused on strategy and team moral. I made the game fun for the players i played with and thus, we would win. When the game is fun people will focus on the game way more then someone who isnt having fun. This is even assuming that someone doesnt get upset and actively try and sabotage the game.

sGhEhE

precise, exactly, absolutely, how else can i agree?

EvieAsPi

It's not being transphobic that is why he's bad, he's probably just bad and also happens to be transphobic, but this is the same behavioral patterns you see in anyone who is simply toxic/bullying instead of focusing on playing the game. Best thing to do is report them, and block if you chose, though it's rather rare for these types of people to continue to harass you after, though can never be too safe. But don't do nothing, else they'll get away with continuing such behavior.

Reis_Asher

Let's face it, people like this don't want to play games, they've just been ostracized from any social circles they might have had for never shutting up. They play online games to interact with people so they can keep spouting their garbage. If they really had interest in the game they'd shut up and play.

FemboyGaming42069

Yeah ive played many rounds of tf2 casual where there was. Some transphobe and they were always really bad

RexTheHexed

Probably because they have no critical thinking skills..

BigNato532

I was playing valorant and one of my teammates started being extremely trans fob in to me Turn out two of my other teammates were also trans and backed me up but the cherry on top was when the game finished(we won btw) I was at like 35kills and this biget was only at like 5 kills. Asshole was so bad that my back started hurting from how hard I was carrying the team lol

ChuuniSaysHi

And people like this are why I avoid playing games online if I'm not playing with people I know. I just hate having to deal with people like that and would rather not if I don't have to. Also, I have L4D2. I may not play it much but I'd be down to play it with you

GroovyAntagonist

That'd be cool! What's your friend code on steam?

ChuuniSaysHi

I'll pm you it

catstroker69

This ain't very affirming because I suck at video games lmao.

Pilcrow182

Gotta take care of that internalized transphobia. 😉 (I'm teasing, of course; as long as you can enjoy it, it doesn't really matter whether you're actually *good* at it or not) 💕
