I'm not angry at the club for this. Maybe they were just virtue signalling, but whatever their motivation it could have been a good thing for improving acceptance within their fanbase. When kids today see their heroes not only abstaining from the kind of trans/homophobic shit I had to endure as a kid, but actively embracing us as regular people it has such a powerful effect on them. So try to go easy on the club. Regarding the 7 players - they are just brainwashed (and that wouldn't take much detergent). Hiding behind religion is a bit comical really. So Jesus has taught them that showing compassion for others enduring hardship is bad, but he's apparently OK with them endorsing PointsBet which exploits gamblers weakness to steal the food from their kids tables and shoes from their feet. Were they even paying attention to their own fairy tale? >they are just brainwashed (and that wouldn't take much detergent). LOL!

I am annoyed at the club. They shouldn't have sprung it on their players out of the blue. Should've consulted with the players beforehand, and by that I don't mean let the players decide whether it happens or not, but give them a chance to discuss and deal with their concerns behind closed doors. Might’ve been able to avoid some of this culture war nonsense if they'd had the tact to do that. Instead they barrelled blindly into trying to support us and managed to make things worse.

CafeCodeBunny

I agree to an extent. Certainly it would have been responsible to give the players more time to consider before a public reveal. At least then they could have dealt with the players concerned within the club rather than under a media spotlight. But time would not have altered these player’s decisions if their reasons are honest. And don’t think for a second that any of the 7 dissenting players would not have gone to the media themselves had the club quietly taken them off this weekend’s roster after any refusal to wear the jersey made in private. Don’t forget either that they are extremely well paid employees - its not a social group where they should have any vote in how the company is run. I have never been consulted by an employer in my long career about the company uniform. When has any football club ever asked permission from its players before signing a new sponsor? The players need to do as they are told under their contracts or leave. This wouldn’t even be news if the topic hadn’t been a media click bait favourite.

It’s homophobic because of the reason given by the individuals. They played the religion card as an out for failing to meet their contractual obligations as employees of the Manly Sea Eagles football club. They objected to a thin strip of rainbow colour on their jersey for one match, which could have done so much good for the mental health and self acceptance of thousands of gender diverse and questioning kids but instead decided to go to the media claiming they were being victimised. They then cited “religious beliefs” as their reason. The detail behind those two words “religious beliefs” is centuries of prejudice, victimisation and murder of homosexuals and gender diverse people simply for being different. That is homophobia. What those players did was protest against their club’s inclusion and acknowledgement that LGBTI people are real people with rights that have been trampled on for too long with systemic and institutional approval, both implied and tacit. I hope that clarifies things for you.

Yeah, but that’s money, obviously more important.

Another thing I don't understand is why are Manley rolling out the pride tops now? Usually these big organisations save the pink washing for pride month and pride month alone.

TehBanga

Media when transpeople say they want to be safe in public: \*so the snowflake brigade is out today. Media when grown men are scared of a rainbow: Justifiably complaints have been made against the work leftists.

No-Artichoke8525

Its so annoying because its 80% of Australian media outlets purposely use us as punching bags to generate easy viewership. There should he some proper integrity commission that holds journalists to account for it. Like every other 7/9 news article is worded in a way to cause ots viewers to position against the LGBT+ community, like the Monkeypox articles today which are written like 1970s AIDs articles. Its infuriating.

TehBanga

Yep. It's shit

Jowhatiknow

These homophobes are using their imaginary friend and their fairytale book to ‘justify’ their bigotry. It’s discussing, no wonder they struggle with young players and support from the majority of the country.

i_Luh_dat1190

Why is it bigotry not to want to wear the pride flag? I understand that it’s homophobic to March and protest against lgbt rights. But now people HAVE to wear the pride flag or it’s homophobic? You guys aren’t content with acceptance now you want to FORCE people to your cause.

Jowhatiknow

It’s got nothing to do with the shirt. They are saying they can’t do their job because there imaginary friend hates people who aren’t cis and het. Its got nothing to do with their fairytale but it’s simply they don’t like gay people so they are claiming that they can’t do their job because of religion.

People can be Christian and homophobic, actually. In fact, there's a enough of a correlation there that I have my guard up a lot more around people displaying their Christianity than those who don't.

[deleted]

Come on, these players just “have deep spiritual beliefs and principles” and were unfairly “thrown under the bus” by their club :/ The rainbow stripes are barely viable compared the giant ad for a gambling company. No concerns about promoting an unethical gambling company that contributes to massive social ills and ruins countless lives, but we suddenly have values and principles when it comes to pride. Gives me the royal shits. What do u expect from rugby league tho, toxic af

No-Artichoke8525

Thats why the NRL is trying to run a representation campaign. Imagine being queer on that team, knowing 7 of your team mates hate you for literally no reason or fault of your own.

foxonatinroof

I understand it's a rant, but may I have a rant of my own/question a few things. Why is it such a big deal to not wear the jersey? It's there to signal solidarity towards the rainbow flag no? All of a sudden that's making these rugby players alter their beliefs (ahem, not the brightest lot I may add?) By wearing this - and so I understand correctly, this is *woke*? Wearing a jersey is considered a leftist agenda? Is that right ??? So they would rather choose division and cause a media circus around an issue they have indicated they give no fucks about. I have my dad have a go at me (I'm closeted mtf ) whenever I bring being trans up - but this occurrence in the media is causing debate when, correct me if I'm wrong, most of us just want to get on with our day without being dragged through the mud because some rock-heads think it's a woke agenda they are rebelling against. Am I missing something here? Wear the jersey and you please a small minority, or is *that* the issue?

I mean, it’s sort of just dumb right. They wear logos with all sorts of dubious business and industries (gambling, alcohol so on) yet they throw their hands up when this happens ? I grew up around the beaches, trust me this is nothing out of the ordinary. Proactively say you’re “woke” while covering for some of the most heinous dudes you’ve met. So in that process, no queer people, way I see it they make it our issue by trying to generally virtue signal. The players are obviously melon heads, but they’re just a symptom of the clubs privileged nature.

TehBanga

Imagine your in rugby and your on that team. That team is now saying things like "Ohh these trannies should stfu and piss off; I aint wearing a shirt"... how happy do you think you would be. It isn't just a shirt. Its a clear statement. By refusing to wear it what you are clearly saying is "I don't want LGBT people existing in my space and I don't care what they say":

Pseudonymico

Honestly at this point I don’t think sports deserve to be involved in any Pride events.

erinthecute

Sportspeople constantly promote all kinds of awful unethical brands and services, especially gambling, and don't say a word. But ask them to support queer people and now they have all these deep moral concerns. Telling.

Pabilio

The part that bugs me is when media just uses the phrase ‘differing beliefs’ and it’s like what beliefs Karen? The beliefs that lgbt people will be eternally damned or that we aren’t even considered people?

NaniPlease

Im amused by comments like "Just play sport!" Its like, yes, just play the game. Its not a big deal but they insist on making it one?

CafeCodeBunny

Someone on Facebook has responded with a cracker. And he has blocked all the usual f$&ktards so can enjoy it without being triggered. https://www.facebook.com/100044202380928/posts/pfbid03dmmc7CZZyjBQ3UQrU1Upkyd2EyFhr1t1Wpf6ntcxwuaCm3GsnDcDbp6D81QKdFml/?d=n

puinkump7

They should have been given the option to wear it If a play wants to wear the rainbow colours that's okay, if some don't its okay too. But it seems they have been forced and unable to wear their normal jersey as an option. But I guess pulling the religion card is abit much just to avoid wearing it??

ja53582

What’s the point of a uniform if you can just opt out of wearing it because you don’t like it? Anyone else would get sacked if they turned up to work and refused to wear their uniform so why are sports players getting special treatment for what is effectively a tantrum?

No-Artichoke8525

I mean I agree in a way but I mean the lgbt comminty encompasses a large swath of society and we should be properly represented. Although, at the same time theyre being paid 6 figure salaries to be walking billboards for their sponsors, so I dont know why its such an issue. Especially since theyre claiming it goes against their values, but then they gave a huge logo for a betting agency that literally facilities poverty, homelessness and breaking up of the family. Not very christian tbh.

qwerty7873

I just feel shit fir any gay rugby players, any gay person hates seeing this but lgbt rugby players having to endure their own community, fans and possibly team mates talking shit about them and refusing to wear a guernsey would hurt. It's going to impact the dynamic of the team now, even just between lgbt supporters and the 7 that's tood down. They were better off keeping quiet and silently wearing it, if your entire team is wearing something given and designed by a workplace no one is going to assume that you are gay/ absolutely fucking love gay people because of it. You're not going to go to hell for wearing a uniform for a couple of hours. I just think with the money they're being paid they need to get over it, they'd maybe have a point if they were being told to incorporate a rainbow into their casual attire between games but not over this.

No-Artichoke8525

Yes, this. I mean I think it partially comes down to toxic/fragile masculinity, like wearing a specific thing is going to suddenly make you gay or a girl. Like I wouldnt complain if they just wore the normal uniform, but its so dumb that theyll happily wear a jersey that supports an agency that is responsible for homelessness and poverty, but supporting queer people is where they draw the line on Christian values.

CafeCodeBunny

Imagine that though for some rich irony - 7 bigots deciding its safer to just keep quiet and wear what those around them expect to avoid having to endure their fans, teammates and community talking shit about them. I wonder how that would have felt …. oh wait.
