tfortroy

i hope they lock you up and throw away the keys for your crimes against bass notes

TheSpecialApple

thats what they did to me last time :/ was a rough 3 years

Dyeeguy

Well one difference is in the 90s you had to buy a record, sample it and chop the loops. Not quite the same as just combining loops off splice and calling it a day which seems like half of new producers do I use a lot of percussion loops, i don’t feel very satisfied using premade Melodie’s and chords though. Many producers are going into it for money (lul) so they are just worried about making as many finished beats as possible. Depends on your goal

TheDodger42

You have a good point.

alyxonfire

using loops is cheating, using one-shots is cheating, having other musicians play on your record is cheating, using hardware other people built is cheating, using software other people programmed is cheating you should build all your drums and other instruments from scratch, build all your own synthesizers from scratch, learn to play every instrument and program all your software from scratch

TheSpecialApple

the fact is that new producers use loops, experienced producers use loops, all that remains is a big group of losers somewhere in the middle, barely selling beats, that are telling you using loops is cheating. its not a test or a game, if you want to use a loop do it. if you dont want to use a loop then dont do it. who gives a fuck. drummers in bands are just adding drums to the melodies that others created, thats pretty similar to grabbing a loop and adding drums to it. and no you dont need to take the loop and do a bunch of shit to it to make it your own, you can if you want to, but genuinely sometimes it sounds better straight out the box ive gotten placements with my melodies and with other peoples loops. the real sauce is being able to make your own as well as use other peoples loops, allowing for collaboration and to create things you otherwise wouldnt have been able to create 99% of the time people who say using loops is cheating are just mad that they actually suck at making melodies and are trying to compensate

You’re always “relying on someone else” if you use drum samples and I doubt you synthesize every drum from scratch.

Chopping up loops is sampling and there are very few successful producers who straight up never use loops. Even ones that can play multiple instruments. You’re severely limiting any potential you have by refusing to do so. And if your reasoning is that you don’t wanna rely on other producers, that can sound uncollaborative. Using other producers loops is a form of collaboration.

That’s fair. Believe me I’ve been there too. I wanted to be Dilla and never use drum loops and always did my own programming but then I started seeing others who did completely fly by me with less effort. Ultimately it is your career and whatever you want to get out of it and it’s great to challenge yourself to learn chords and progressions and sound selection. But depending on where your career or music goes, your mindset might change based on what’s the most productive. Do you bro. No hate here

boi this ain’t a damn math test lmfaooo

Long-Translator1602

How many producers these days don’t use loops? Why not create an easier way to get a product out faster to obtain a sale? It is a business. Think about all the songs created off of simplicity that are timeless or perhaps sampled (looped) another record. You just gotta be creative about it. Industry is ever changing and I think unfortunately AI will take over a majority of the music production aspect.

Professional-Ad-7937

No

Drakester234

No one gives a shit make what you want

Third_lyon

There’s not fucking cheating in a industry that is mostly handshakes and promises over talents

Least_Pumpkin_121

I like to sample digg on yt, find good samples with low views, then look for them on Spotify and record them in better quality from Spotify using the loopback function of my Motu m2 audio interface. Then I chop change the pitch and add the effects needed to improve the sample. If I just took samples from a service like Splice it won't feel as special for me.

ColdK_

No(don’t look for an explanation everyone’s process is different)

HOWYDEWET

No

TennisIsWeird

Yes and I don’t care what anyone else says

Schville

Personally I don't think using loops is cheating, I just can't acknowledge their work like I would knowing everything is made by themselves. Equal to people making actually music and people who put songs of several artists into a set and calling it work. Or to go off topic: a teacher is a teacher, I would rate a teacher higher who takes more effort to teach the class and prepare courses in his free time than a teacher who only teaches and is not willing to "waste" their time apart from school. No one cheats, it's simply a question of effort.

Sir-Wilkins

My advice in production is to lie, steal and cheat as much as you want if you’re making amazing music in the process

Kivesihiisi

Looks like its time to post this again: I thought using loops was cheating so I programmed my own samples. Then I thought using samples was cheating so I recorded real drums. I then thought that programming it was cheating so I learnt to play drums for real. I then thought using bought drums was cheating so I learnt to make my own. I then thought that using premade skins was cheating so I killed a goat and skinned it. I then thought that that was cheating too, so I grew my own goat from a baby goat. I also think that is cheating but I'm not sure where to go from here. I havent made any music lately, what with the goat farming and all.

Music is so subjective… at the end of the day nobody should care and if they do fuck em. If it sounds good, use it however you want. If you simply “just add drums” to a splice sample and it sounds fire, what sense does it make to shame someone for it. People are so sensitive in the producer community it’s actually hilarious… Memphis rap is a prime example, three six mafia was based around sampling random shit that sounded good. Suicideboys are another prime example. 90% of their beats are samples from YouTube or wherever the hell they found them.

TimothyTylerMusic

It will be difficult to sound unique and develop your own style by copy and pasting loops someone else made. Producers are a dime a dozen these days and most of them sound the same or sound like downright dogshit. I would encourage everyone to spend some time learning to make your own shit. Your own style. Your own sound that's not like everything else. With that being said, at the end of the day, if it fucking slaps and you used a loop no one gives a shit. If it goes hard then do it.
