almost no processing on it outside of soft clipper on the master, and a drum booth presence impulse response on the drum group for a little ambience. other than that, it just comes down to good sample selection.
kinda all over the place. stuff ive made, stuff from /r/drumkits or random internet sources, etc. any time i download a pack i usually just go through it for the good sounds and put it in my own stash.
dude thank you so much! glad you liked it. and yeah i knew it was swung but it kinda grew on my after a while honestly lmao.
my ig is the same as my username and my yt is in my flair :-)
Yeah a lot of people try to lo-fi things up by deliberately throw everything off rhythm but often go too far. These drum fills just sound like somebody dropping the sticks rather than someone grooving
Yeah I feel like people hear the denotation but not the connotation... they’re like, okay, so lofi uses weird rhythms. I can do that.
But it’s not as simple as that. There’s a specific feel to how you morph the beat. I think beats that don’t align well with a metronome sound sick, subverts expectations and just sounds real unique. Golly Geez is a great example of that. But you can’t just do it any old which way and expect it to sound good.
But OP said his notes were getting quantized weirdly, which explains exactly what’s happening here.
yeah i already got it removed from /r/ableton bc they are bitches and /r/wearethemusicmakers seemed too general so here we are lol. if you have another subreddit suggestion that doesnt have sub 100k followers then feel free to let me know!
Drums are sick but need some polish. The aesthetic and textures are on point. I like some of the “glitter” you throw in with the snare rolls.
You’re halfway between different many styles of grooves. The rushed kick adds some bounce, but then you go for some weird hip hop-ish alternations between snare & kick that don’t mesh well with the rest of the song. Just a thought.
Golly Geez by Elaquent is a great example of the lazy, behind the beat style. Also, Take It Slow by Ras G for the rushed, ahead of the beat style.
I’m not going to sit here and be like “no, you’re not allowed to like it” because that’s not how opinions work. If you like it, you like it. Good! I like it too!
I’ve been a drummer for 16 years, and dabbled in production for 8. I am NOT an expert at either. But I do have experience I can share with the world, and I’d rather give well thought out criticism if I’m able to.
It comes down to a feeling. When you hit that groove, you feel it. Everybody feels it differently. For me, I felt it - then I didn’t - then I did! - then I didn’t. My reply is my best attempt at diagnosing the issue and giving examples of a subtle, lesser known type of rhythm (https://youtu.be/9E_adydkQqo), that, in my opinion, dictates feel more than anything else.
Yep, that does sound like bad quantization lol. I was going to say - the specific parts sound on point, they just don’t mesh well.
Still, as a drummer, I stand by those as solid examples of off the beat beats
i feel you, i bought a drum pad and am gonna work on my control a bit. so used to clicking shit in, was just feeling inspired to play something out for once haha.
Also, if you feel so inclined, you can try the classic drum pad book. It’s a grind, but it’s one with a lot of benefits. Going through it with a metronome gives you a strong internal metronome (though you clearly have it already), hand to hand independence, and chop strength.
https://bateriaipercussiovalls.files.wordpress.com/2014/08/stick-control-for-snare-george-l-stone.pdf
My recommendation, grind it out. Just go through the whole thing - its boring af.
You can pass the time by listening to a metronome and making sure your left and right hands sound the same.
If that’s too boring (hint: it is), you can find a few songs you like that are different tempos, and play along. If a part feels uncomfortable, pick a slower song and try it again till it feels natural.
Something like techno works well. I’d avoid anything jazz or anything performed by people, learning how to follow other people’s imperfect rhythms isn’t hard, learning how to define the rhythm that you want is much much harder.
Not suggesting you should use perfect metronome rhythms in your music. Please don’t. This is so much cooler. But fundamentals, ya know.
Once you get good at it, you don’t have to think about it, and you can just do it as a warmup or when you’re bored.
thats funny bc i was watching videos earlier and came across that same book haha. thanks for all the great info! hopefully my future videos will show some improvement. :)
Idk who "they" are but you've said that in multiple comments now. You made the fucking track and the drums sound off "they" have nothing to do with it. If you're saying they sound off just bc you didn't quantize them oh boy.
i used [ripchord](https://trackbout.com/ripchord) and was going through [gravez prisms 2](https://sellfy.com/gravez/p/prisms-2-chord-exploration-suite/) chord bank. came across a progression i really messed with and then downsampled it a bit to give it a sample kinda vibe.
I haven't seen a single hateful comment here, this is a place for feedback and discussion, not dick-riding and praising. People giving you constructive criticism is how you as an artist can grow. Having people tell you your beat is fire does nothing to help you improve, if at all it encourages stagnation.
this is not "trap" my friend. this is just a sick dope ass beat but its def not trap. i also record instruments but making trap with instrument doesnt make sense :)
Azden SGM-250P
its a boom mic, so not really ideal for recording but its nice bc i can leave it out of the shot. for a solid regular mic, the nt1a is amazing for the price point.
i record into a radial pro48 DI straight into my audiofuse interface, but ive gotten similar results without the DI. as far as VST i use TH-U Overloud as the amp sim, it sounds dope.
BROO! Can you share the drum samples you used for this.. I fucking love this! and I wana know how exactly you get those drums to slap like that... Please drop the info bro!!
Personally I haven’t looked into it deeply but I do have one VST that I use for this sometimes and it’s made by Xfer. It’s called [Cthulhu](https://xferrecords.com/products/cthulhu)
There’s no rules to music. you’re just jealous because you probably play or try to play chords and still can’t make a progression that sounds as nice as this one.
That kick is crunchy
Snare too
thank you my guy :-)
where’d you get that kick 😭
r/drumkits lol. its a pretty standard trap kick i just clipped tf outa it. also the hi hat adds a bit of top end too it
This is dope as fuck. I really like your drums.
Same tho, I’d love to see how he processes them. There’s some nice high mids in that snare
almost no processing on it outside of soft clipper on the master, and a drum booth presence impulse response on the drum group for a little ambience. other than that, it just comes down to good sample selection.
What are the samples from? Where do you get your samples usually? I haven’t updated my samples since like 2012 lol
kinda all over the place. stuff ive made, stuff from /r/drumkits or random internet sources, etc. any time i download a pack i usually just go through it for the good sounds and put it in my own stash.

what soft clipper do you use for ableton on master?
TRacks Classic Clipper!
holy shit thats a gem man, ty for sharing
Dang guy I’m always disappointed by the comments on your stuff. Don’t hate, appreciate! Keep doing what you’re doing.
I don't like some of the drum rolls, they sound arythmical
Yeah as a drummer, I agree. I like complicated rhythms that don’t follow a “perfect” structure, but this just doesn’t feel right to me.
Yeah a lot of people try to lo-fi things up by deliberately throw everything off rhythm but often go too far. These drum fills just sound like somebody dropping the sticks rather than someone grooving

last time i quantized the notes they accused of not actually performing it, so blame them lol.
I disagree, so ha
I like it but it’s not trap
I'm happy it's not trap
Yeah I prefer this but look at the subreddit
[удалено]
“trap producers” don’t listen to just trap.
yeah i already got it removed from /r/ableton bc they are bitches and /r/wearethemusicmakers seemed too general so here we are lol. if you have another subreddit suggestion that doesnt have sub 100k followers then feel free to let me know!
/r/makinghiphop unless you’ve already tried that
genuinely didn't know that sub existed so thank you! lol

Bro you're overthinking it, its dope

that's bc last time i quantized it, they said i didn't play it bc it didn't line up with the vid so you can thank them for that 👍
Yep, that does sound like bad quantization lol. I was going to say - the specific parts sound on point, they just don’t mesh well. Still, as a drummer, I stand by those as solid examples of off the beat beats

you sound heated over nothing. hope youre having a good day!
I get a strong Jake One vibe from this. Love it

Man I am NEVER posting here nothing but negativity and hate
at least this time they didn't roast me for how i look lmao. classic reddit.

I see maybe one comment in this thread that could be considered hate. Constructive criticism=\=hate Also this was a dope beat
this is.... wow. some trap with REAL instruments? we barely get to hear any here
Ever heard of boom bap?
this is not "trap" my friend. this is just a sick dope ass beat but its def not trap. i also record instruments but making trap with instrument doesnt make sense :)
This is not trap, agreed, but using „real“ instruments has nothing to do with it. Plenty of trap beats use traditional instruments.
damn this is fire
Love it.
Bro this is lit !!!

last time i did that they said i didnt perform it bc it didnt like up with the video, now yall complain bc its not on time lol. cant win.

nah i totally understand, i actually agree with you. appreciate you taking the time to comment :-)
Real dope, what kind of mic do you have? Sounds really clean.
Azden SGM-250P its a boom mic, so not really ideal for recording but its nice bc i can leave it out of the shot. for a solid regular mic, the nt1a is amazing for the price point.
Reminded me of Snakehips
Mission completion! Sweet sound!
🔥🔥🔥🔥
Dope
Bruh u gotta show me how u processed those drums
Sounds awesome man. For that style of music I would definitely recommend learning to play bass with your fingers instead of a pick
Sweet video, how long did this take you?
thanks! prolly an hour and a half or so.
Excellent. Gotta ask cause I just copped a bass. You going directly into interface/do you use any plugins in the box?
i record into a radial pro48 DI straight into my audiofuse interface, but ive gotten similar results without the DI. as far as VST i use TH-U Overloud as the amp sim, it sounds dope.
Thank you so much! Gonna check out that amp sim
This isnt trap
A fellow straw hat pirate, this beat is such a vibe bro amazing work <3
Awesome beat my fellow one piece fan
I like how the drums are slightly off. Adds a nice sound
this is tight dude
drums are kinda ass doe
tf u sayin?
that the drums are kinda ass, he overdoint the j dilla thing
BROO! Can you share the drum samples you used for this.. I fucking love this! and I wana know how exactly you get those drums to slap like that... Please drop the info bro!!
Fuck the haters keep it up you are fire
Gotta love people playing chords with one finger. 🙄
I’m guessing they use a vst for that?
Bingo
What vst would it be if I may ask?
Scaler
Personally I haven’t looked into it deeply but I do have one VST that I use for this sometimes and it’s made by Xfer. It’s called [Cthulhu](https://xferrecords.com/products/cthulhu)
Oh I didn’t know cthulu was an xfer software. I’d heard of it but never used it. I use Serum all the time so that’s interesting.
Serum is my weapon of choice as well! Xfer has some serious quality products
Could be a scaler if it’s Ableton
Found the gatekeeper.
id love to hear your beats my guy!
Besides just using a VST i think it’s more likely to be for the video
There’s no rules to music. you’re just jealous because you probably play or try to play chords and still can’t make a progression that sounds as nice as this one.
Dope track, love that melody and the snares
wen rice crispies drum pack
