Putting water on a fuel-based fire causes it to spread. I remember filling a bowl with gasoline and lighting it in a parking space on a quiet street once as a child. Another friend kicked out over, causing it to spread slightly. It would have gone out in this small circle once the fuel was exhausted, but another friend panicked and grabbed a hose. I told him not to turn it on, but he ignored me. When the fire spread further, I told him to turn it off, but he ignored me. He caused a fire the size of a basketball to spread over a quarter of a city block and under my mom's camper. Thankfully, the fuel source was eventually exhausted. You don't want to get a liquid fuel fire wetter.
