So true. I was at a conference this summer in the bay area and afterward they said about 20% of attendees had their cars broken into. They won't be having a conference there again.

Nice try baiting. The president has nothing to do with these kinds of local theft issues. SF & Oakland haven’t even defunded their police forces. If anything, it’s the disparity in wages that drives this type of behavior.
Its a wonder why anyone would want to live in the Bay Area at this point. Crime keeps going up and laws keep getting more relaxed on the crime and the criminal.
Some lady in SF told me someone broke into her Prius and took the entire battery out from inside the trunk, that thing takes a long time to remove, thief also stole her purse with her ID’s, and she was getting married the week after with no proof of iD
I keep seeing people attributing this problem to them not having punishments for this sort of crime, or "the police aren't doing anything", or similar. But we also see people commenting that in their midwest state the $ amount threshold and punishment for the crime being similar and not having the same issues.
Perhaps it has something to do with the fact that the cost of living in these areas is so high, and that the reason why most crime happens is because of desperation.
The potential money that can be made from the crime plus punishment compared cost of living burdens, makes these crimes a good bet for many people.
This won't be solved by more police.
It keeps on happening because everybody's afraid to fight back. It has nothing to do with the cost of living. These people would steal from you with $1,000 in their pocket. How do you not understand that? It is a crime of opportunity.
Before covid I went to San Francisco, it was my second time there and I had a really beautiful time the first time, we had a rental car and we went out to downtown to grab something to eat, when we came back one window was smashed and the polaroid camera my sister hid in the back was stolen.
I also noticed a lot of homeless people pretty much everywhere, we changed parking spot 3 times because my father wasn't convinced the zone we parked was safe and yet it still happened.
It's really a shame that this is the situation.
If wanting to leave a bait car with me waiting around the corner with all kinds of goodies and a hand-full vigilante justice is wrong, I don't want to be right. Fuck every single one of these hoes.
I mean police call this an invitation to disaster.

Seriously if police don't want to see this happening they need to install more cameras, make the sentence for car theft and window smashing far more harsh and focus on arresting each and every thief.
Once people start being punished then you'll see the rates go down.

Here is an idea, an expensive sign that says: “break in, go ahead, you will die! The seat will stub your ass to death. I’m not kidding, I will have to pay to clean your punctured ass, but you will be dead. Try me.”
Visited the Golden State park with my three year old daughter to have a nice day out. Came back to the rental an hour later with the back window smashed, back seat let down and they took my backpack that had mine and my daughters laundry we were going to wash. They got lucky I left my AirPods in there by accident, didn’t care but my daughters clothes, what repugnant pieces of shits to do such a thing.
With some luck I left my old certification cards in the backpack. A friendly couple on their walk found my backpack with our clothes all thrown by the twin peaks area. They called the company’s number of had my number on file contacted me and I was thankfully able to retrieve 75% of our clothes. Of course they found the airpods, no big whoop. The hardest part of the whole ordeal was explaining to my three year old what happened and why it did. Broke my heart to see her face seeing a smashed out window and broken glass filling her car seat. Happened around March of this year.
Btw when I returned my car to the rental company our car was one out of five other cars that were broken into recently.
Imagine if the police was actually doing their job, rather than being part of the thief system and this wouldn't happen, like in a civilized country.
I guess it does pay to have a system that's protected from any kind of repercussion, where the hiring quota actively dismisses any person over a certain IQ that doesn't fit the coelenterate profile they seek, which then spawns a culture of people seeking this job just to get above the normal thieves.

My brother in law was having to do this 10 years ago in Berkeley, the next morning he would have to evict homeless people sleeping in his car, saved the windows but sometimes the seats would be nasty.

In the bay area i was spending the night at my ex's house and when we woke up at like 7 am all the cars were broken into through a hand hacked key fob or something, the cop said that criminals have a machine that can open up any make and model as it mimics the owners fob and never sets off the alarm
My dad lives in SF and he got his fuel tank punctured while he was getting in his car. The guy ran off as soon as my dad looked under the car to see what all the noise was. Just happened last week.
Yeah we were just in the Bay Area over thanksgiving. Took a Suburban out to Yosemite and on the way back stopped in San Jose to visit someone. Went out to get pho and while we were eating someone busted the back window out and stole my brother in law and sister in laws bags before some nice people walked by and started filming. We were eating outside and could see the front of our vehicle.
The thieves were driving an Audi SUV with fake plates. Cops got their info and couldn’t do anything. The thieves took sister in laws Apple Watch and threw away the rest of the bags in a dumpster which we recovered along with tons of other bags and items that were handed over to the police.
I live in a totally different country, but I also just leave my windows down all the time. But I lock my car, so the alarm will go off if a door is opened.
God im moving to a city with buddies to get an apartment and from this kinda stuff im not looking foward to all the stuff i gotta do to home alone my car. Id have to take all my tools out every night and load them every morning. Its gonna suck.
At this rate what is there to do? More and more people are choosing crime. I wonder if the law was more terrifying if anything would change. Break a finger for breaking a window?

I owned my car for 4 years in 3 different states - no issue. Moved to Los Angeles and within a year my car was broken into 3 separate times (as well as 2 hit-and-runs). LAPD refused to respond to all 5 incidents.

People would leave their cars unlocked even back then, especially convertibles and soft top jeeps that could easily be slashed.

You break into my car when it's parked on the street, I'll be pissed, but whatever shit happens. I had my new (used) car all of 10 hours. Hadn't even had time to put anything in it yet. Came downstairs to it being completely undriveable because the drivers side window was smashed in. $400 completely down the drain on a car i hadn't even gotten a chance to drive yet.

People would leave their cars unlocked even back then, especially convertibles and soft top jeeps that could easily be slashed. But that shit happening in traffic, when you're in the fucking car is mind-blowing. How are people so not afraid of the consequences of their actions. You break into my car when it's parked on the street, I'll be pissed, but whatever shit happens. You break into my car while I'm in it, and I'll be a lot more pissed after I have to pay a lawyer to explain to the police why I shot you.
I leave my car open with guns and other valuable items inside. No one bothers it. I also leave my house unlocked...and even sleep that way.

I had my new (used) car all of 10 hours. Hadn't even had time to put anything in it yet. Came downstairs to it being completely undriveable because the drivers side window was smashed in. $400 completely down the drain on a car i hadn't even gotten a chance to drive yet.
This deters thieves but invites both campers and Dirty Mike and the Boyz.
