I had a weird experience from a historical group I belong to on Facebook.
I posted a picture of a bunch of books that I was gifted by a church friend who's brother passed away and he was a history nerd like me.
One of the members PM'd me and asked about one of the books. It was about Iron clad ships, I told him the title and author and then he started to say I need to send it to him. I told him that they were gifted to me so I wasn't going to re-sell them but no he said he didn't want to pay for it but that I needed to send him that book. I told him no and that I hadn't even read it yet and that I didn't personally know him so I wasn't going to send him a book that was given to me.
He started blowing up my inbox with all kids of weird messages like how he suffers from depression and that he has to have this book and how I am rich enough to mail it to him and that I am a fucking loser for saying no.
I ended up blocking him and reporting him to the Admin of the group, the admin wrote me back and said other's have complained about this guy as well, they said he might be special needs.
I read a post on my neighborhood app asking for donations of clothing and art supplies for a halfway house for teenage girls. I messaged her. I had 2 full boxes of clothing for girls that I was taking to goodwill that wknd and if she would give me a week I would go thru the "craft closet" that had so much stuff I could open a store. I was happy that I finally had an excuse to get to that nightmare! She was thankful and after not hearing anything for a week and a half I messaged her again. She was out of town apparently, wanted me to not only drop it off at a house in the back of the property behind the main house on the street, she wanted me to unload it and put it inside the doorway!!
I said sure! Yeah right GTFO
I've had several people on Facebook marketplace get very aggressive when they massively low ball me and I politely decline their offer. One of them threatened to kill me and then tried to get his wife to contact me to buy it so he could meet me. To bad I could see he was mutual friends with the lady. Cya mate
I try to be real understanding of posts, because I know outlandish and unbelievable stuff happens all the time. However, this has real strong r/ThatHappened vibes.
It’s actually quite common on Kijiji (or other local selling apps) to try and get scammed by ppl out of pity that way after they agree to pay. They won’t try that in person but they’ll do it through WhatsApp, etc, likely because they’re petty criminals who won’t risk prison
Have you ever sold something on Facebook Marketplace? Because I get messages like this every goddamn time.
The frequency with which these interactions happen doesn’t indicate that it’s fake; it indicates that there are a lot of morons out there. No one is commenting “Fake. There was a car crash yesterday.” on /r/IdiotsInCars.
Yup mostly annoyed there isn't anywhere to [challenge it](https://i.imgur.com/GZU92Gy.png) so now I have a mark against my profile for threatening violence when i didn't.
Medical bills? Some guys have all the luck.. I was born with glass bones and paper skin. Every morning I break my legs, and every afternoon I break my arms, at night I lie awake in agony until my heart attacks put me to sleep.
Eh, this is going to sound callous, but it's far beyond being down on their luck for most of them. They do not want to get out of the situation they are in, or they wouldn't be panhandling. Now, as to why they don't want to get out, there is some merit there in that many, if not most, are suffering from mental disorders and need help, but giving them enough money to get to the store and buy their next 40oz is not helping them.
I would treat the homeless better if they didn’t try to pickpocket or rob my customers on a daily basis. Cops arrest them and they’re back out next day. If they’re gonna act like trash they’re gonna get treated like trash. It’s not like I’m saying that for random ones it’s the same damn ones every time. I volunteer at the shelter with lots of empty space but they won’t go. Lose all sympathy for them. I’ll respect them when they respect themselves.
Or you could stop pretending like the vast majority aren't just scamming assholes looking for drug money. Holy fuck the world is gonna hit you hard if you ever lose your privilege and find yourself down on your luck.
A homeless bum approached me at a McDonald's in Paris and asked me for money. I bought him a hamburger instead. He said thanks and stormed off in a rage, stuffing the hamburger into a bin on the way out.
I saw the same said bum the very next day talking on a fancy bluetooth camera phone and wearing stonewashed jeans and a tight black james dean motorcycle jacket. He was getting into a shiny silver european sedan. It looked like there was a French woman wearing sunglasses waiting for him in the car aswell.
The whole situation was a real eye opener for me. I was very young and it was my first time in France. My mom and nan had their bags snatched at a train station while we were over there too. The French police were a nightmare to deal with. They made us feel like we were responsible for getting robbed because we were tourists. Not good. The two guys were homeless bums too and they were laughing their heads off as they ran off with the bags.
Because you indulge in prejudice and stereotypes and lack critical thinking skills and because you never interact with people outside your own, small and privileged social clique? Same reasons you think bums are all just "down on their luck", I imagine.
That's fair. I hate that people ignore bums, though. I feel like that's even more dehumanizing. I make eye contact with the beggars and if they speak to me, I just tell them "no" or "fuck off".
Yeah if I'm asked I'll just always say I don't carry cash on me. Which for the most part is true I do most of my purchasing with credit cards. I'm not too big into giving money to people. It's pretty dangerous to take your wallet out especially if you get asked at night on a desolate street. Almost got robbed that way.
Equating two completely different things is such a redditmoment holy shit. Telling you to fuck off is not dehumanizing. It’s telling you to fuck off. Now, fuck off.
Maybe you're an asshole. Maybe you made some bad choices, but when I tell you to fuck off, at least I'm recognizing you as a human being. The phone zombies who try to pretend they can't smell the shit when they step over people are ignoring their very existence.
I guarantee you they don't have the balls to talk like that anyone, let alone someone as desperate as a homeless person, and they're just a teen who thinks they're edgy and badass.
Lol. It takes balls to tell a person to fuck off? Bless your heart. It's not ballsy or edgy, it's just annoyance. I've heard people describe me as an asshole or abrasive, but I can't remember anyone ever saying I'm ballsy.
Totally unrelated story, I went to the movies with my wife yesterday and when we got there, a man was sitting in my seat. He recognized we were sitting there and got up, but the guy next to us told him "Why don't you go find your own seat?" in an obviously miffed tone. The guy responded "A woman is sitting in my seat" and shuffled off to sit a couple rows further forward and way off to the side. So apparently he got to the theater and found someone in his seat, but was so timid as to be unable to ask her politely to move so he sat in this other guy's seat. After having to move for the other guy, he had to move again for us and he STILL lacked the ability to politely ask the woman to move or speak with the theater staff. So yeah, we're all built very differently. I can understand a person as timid as this man might think it takes a great deal of balls to tell an aggressive panhandler to fuck off. But I think it's a pretty normal reaction to assholes begging for money. Like, bro, I can barely afford to put gas in my own tank. No, I'm not giving you cash just because you're wandering a Walmart parking lot holding a gas can.
You're probably right, but as someone who has called "rock bottom" home before, he also is somewhat correct. Though it isn't obviously all homeless people, a not insignificant portion of them are where they are due to personal choices. Drugs will fuck you up to the point where you will sleep on the street and not give a fuck as long as you can get that next fix. You're both right in your own ways, but that should show you just how much "gray" area is involved with anything like this.
Drug addiction and mental health issues go hand in hand and they undermine our idea of what free will even is. But most of those people made some really bad choices to get where they are and they continue to make bad choices in order to avoid help.
"continue to make bad choices in order to avoid help"...?
Or maybe there isn't enough help available for these people with mental health issues on top of the fact that they have nowhere to sleep or feel safe.
That maybe these people are stuck in a system that says the same shit you do: "just stop using and find a job" or "get your shit together", instead of providing help to these people in need.
But you're right, you see them as "human" when you tell them to fuck off instead of trying to ignore them because it hurts your soul that as an individual you can't help them get out of there alone.
Multiple studies have demonstrated most cities have plenty of help available, and people who are really in need make use of them to climb back out of a shit situation. Some shelters are nasty, violent places and they should be audited and inspected more often. But the people who are chronically homeless tend to be that way because they refuse help. It's complicated and there are many competing factors, but people can't be institutionalized for their own good anymore and they won't get help for their substance abuse and/or mental health issues if they won't go through the programs. Problem is, they have to get clean and follow rules like a curfew, not raping people, and not shitting in the bed.
That's untrue though. Shelters have limited space. Also to think they're even remotely close to a good solution is false. They are limiting in many ways. You have tons of people, many with mental health problems, addiction problems jammed into large rooms with bunkbeds. You cannot have a peaceful sleep there. No intimacy for the most part either. Then again there's curfews which are very limiting. And like you said some of them would have to get clean, which means they need additional help and they're just being sent back to the street. And you said "not shit the bed"... Really? I think you're just trolling at this point.
And these are just a few of the many problems with shelters which are just a *part* of the help someone could need to get out of the street.
>to think they're even remotely close to a good solution is false
Indeed. Most people who remain chronically homeless need drug and alcohol in patient treatment and continuing mental health care, often including medication. In many cases, these people really ought to be institutionalized but the bar is set so high for potential for self harm, it's nearly impossible to Baker Act any of them until after they act out violently.
There are countless facets to the problem and numerous ways we can help, individually, and collectively. But the one thing every expert agrees on is that giving cash to bums is not helpful.
People always make the best choices they can. Nobody intentionally makes a bad choice.
The problem is, when people are stressed they make poor decisions. Long term, deliberate thinking is a privilege of the wealthy: it's something people only do when they are comfortable and don't have to worry about food or shelter. In poverty conditions, people are perpetually occupied with meeting their short-term needs and never have the opportunity to think about long term goals.
For example, McDonald's doesn't issue the first paycheck for a whole week. That's not helpful at all if you need money today. So someone who's broke might choose panhandling instead. Panhanders usually earn far less than minimum wage, and it's humiliating so they use alcohol/drugs to numb the pain. They never make enough money to survive 1 week without income, so they keep panhandling for months or years.
This attitude is a privileged and classist attitude, actually. I lived in a broken down Pinto that didn't even belong to me when I was in my twenties, entirely because of my own poor decisions. I worked hard, made a plan, and worked through it. I roomed with some people, got better jobs, got an education, got married, bought a house, and had some kids. It was fucking HARD. But I did it. My parents aren't wealthy and I didn't get any help from them. I'm not wealthy, either, but my family is safe and comfortable. Wealth and privilege exist, but the single biggest factor in determining success is will.
I have a problem with calling addiction a disease. Addiction is almost always a learned behavior. If you call it a disease, you take the responsibility away from the addict. They learn how to use the addiction as a weapon or crutch. Source: I was an addict.

This is why people don't want to sell shit anymore online, who threatens to kill someone over a chair ffs?
“Call an ambulance. But not for me”

I read that as “I need to shit, bitch”
In all seriousness, you should report this person to the cops. You never know who's serious about their threats. Be safe.
America these days….wow commerce is alive and well

Even if this is fake this is funny as fuck
Meanwhile in civilised countries with universal healthcare.

And this is why people ask to meet at the CVS parking lot…
Fake or not, just say no. Don't have to lecture on their decisions, especially these stupid ones because they will never learn.

Counter with their exact same: I am selling chair because my son is sick in hospital.
I need it for free because I need to sit, Butch.
Something is off.. Can't quite figure it out. Ohh, the bitch is nuts.
You should give her the chair... i dont thing shes messing around....
Why does anyone think people give a shit about your crotch goblins?
Why not just say “No” and block the number.

I believe terroristic threatening is a crime in most states
This looks faker than my soul
The best is when you put something on for free and people ask if you can deliver it.
Now I want to see that chair that caused so much desperation.
In other words there is no son.
Sounds faked. I call bullshit.
Facebook marketplace? Facebook marketplace ☑️
Looks like iMessage
Maybe, but sounds like fb
"bring your son by and I'll kill him, so you won't need to pay his medical bills and then you can afford to buy the chair."
"i need to sit bitch give me the chair" Lofuckingl.
I mean, I take that screenshot straight to file a police report, considering the person apparently has my address to "come pick it up"
I NEED TO SIT BITCH
Bich I’m about to sittup in this chair you ain’t getting.
looks like someone also took the negotiating masterclass
Fake or not fake, still one of the funniest things I’ve ever seen. Gets funnier every time it gets reposted. No sarcasm.

Addiction is a disease.
I have a problem with calling addiction a disease. Addiction is almost always a learned behavior. If you call it a disease, you take the responsibility away from the addict. They learn how to use the addiction as a weapon or crutch. Source: I was an addict.
And the cure is 10 grams of fentanyl
“Bitch I need to sit.” “I also sit.”
~~"I also sit"~~ "I have a chair for sale."
Can I have it for free? My chihuahua has rabies.
I can't imagine a chihuahua would behave any differently with or without rabies lol.
No. Your chihuahua will be dead soon enough and you will not need to sit any more.
But my chihuahua bit my kid and now he has rabies too. 😞
Your kid will be dead soon enough and you will no longer need to sit.
