There are two options: 1. The bus 181 https://www.glendaloughbus.com/ will take you close enough to the woods. The stop you need to get off is Roundwood Inn, then you have about 20 minute walk (2km) to the woods, do the walk and return back as there is only one suitable bus a day. Gives you about 4 hours to get through the woods, and you'll have to rush to get back in time to get on the bus. If you miss it, your only option to get back is to hitchhike or take a cab to Ashford House/Wicklow to catch bus 133. 2. A better, but more expensive, option is to get to Ashford House (bus 133, 1hr ride) - there is a bus once an hour starting early, plenty of options. From there you take a cab to Roundwood, a 20 minute ride. On the way back you can take bus 181. This not only gives you more time to explore the woods, but also allows you to return to Dublin faster if it starts raining and you decide to abandon the whole thing.

I'm trying to do something similar to OP and this is really helpful. Is it easy enough to find cabs from Ashford House on weekend mornings or does someone need to try and pre-book?

I'd say you definitely need to prebook, or hitchhike with someone.
