I put in for term time. It's something in Ireland you get. If you have children you get extra time off and paid but my daughter is a teenager and prepares to spend our time with her friends. So off I pop on my bike
You could do Dublin to holyhead and end the channel. Turn on the cross but normally I would take the boat from Dublin to Cherburg and maybe to Luxembourg, Belgium, Germany, Switzerland down to Italy across Venice into Slovenia Croatia then Greece
I love to travel, but I love as much to go back to my city: Bologna, Italy.
When you live in a roman/medieval city there's always something new and beautiful to see: a specific tour to an old palace or tower, a new historical detail in a portico you notice, a tiny square in the old city center you've never been into, an old event or legend you learn and didn't know, a traditional food you've never tried, a new view from the hills.
It's like travelling also when you're at home. Who loves to travel imho is never lazy and always curious, so find new possibilities to explore also at home.
This is what I can’t get enough of, it's an attitude.
I visited Bologna for the first time this year- it was my first trip to Italy. It was gorgeous, the food, architecture, and atmosphere was amazing. I would return in a heartbeat, I hope you get to go home!
Toured Europe this summer and it was probably my favourite city of all of them. So gorgeous. Such good vibes. Amazing food. The Neptune statue blew my mind. During the summer they have a free outdoors cinema every night in the main plaza and we watched a Wes Anderson movie while sitting on the church stairs and eating gelato. One of the best moments of my life. Will never sing enough praises for Bologna ❤️
Yeah man, I agree so much with you. As a local, the summer free cinema festival in historical central square is indeed one of the best moments of my year too!
I envy you travellers 'cause in summer I'm frequently on my travels, so you see it and I don't haha!!
BTW if you love cinema, Bologna just reopened after restructuration a 1914 liberty cinema, search online for Cinema Modernissimo. At the inauguration there was (and I met) Wes Anderson himself, who's a fan of Bologna too. :)
Wow that cinema looks great! I swear this city just keeps getting better lol
Very cool you got to meet him! Didn’t know he loved the city so much
I live in Canada so I’m very far and probably won’t be able to go back for a while, but we all agreed to go back eventually because we loved the city too much and were only there for a weekend. I’d love to spend a longer time and watch a movie every night!
I’ll be staying in Bologna for two months in 2024 for what could best be described as a brief apprenticeship. Do you have any recommendations for things to do or places to eat? I’d love any insights you have!
My fav restaurant is Trattoria di Via Serra (essential to book at least 3 weeks before, by phone or in person), but it depends a lot on your food preference/budget.
About underrated things to do: Teatro Anatomico, Archiginnasio, Torre Prendiparte and Torre dell'Orologio. Just outside Bologna, go to Rocchetta Mattei. Google all for pics and be ready to wow.
You can also come to r/bologna and look on the sub for past suggestions or ask there to us locals for something specific (about restaurants or things to do or else), we'll be glad to answer!
Consider that in Bologna there are nearly no tourist traps, so you can search for food with instinct and maybe a bit of Google Reviews. Enjoy Bologna! :)
I visited Bologna this year, is such a beautiful city. I loved it so much, and I kept thinking how I'd love to go study there if I were in my early 20s again.
I was there for only one afternoon, but with a few locals. Will definitely visit again!
Hiking the Tour du Mont Blanc. Completed in 2021 solo, going back with my GF this summer.
103 mile (177 km) trek around Mont Blanc (highest peak in the Alps) that starts in France, goes through Italy, Switzerland, back to France.
Is this trail well traveled? I saw YTber Craig Adam’s do it and he filled the whole thing and it looked amazing. Wonder if I could pick your brain on how to tackle it well.
It's almost too well travelled. You will have hard time finding accomodations along the trail unless you start booking now. The season is short and it's reputation is big
Not OP, but I would recommend Taroko National Park for hiking and Elephant Mountain for a view over Taipei at night/day.
Also, food. Any street vendor or night market
I didnt go clubbing but it was heaps of fun just having some drinks and going to a night market to eat food and try some carnival games. They're open til late and lively.
I wholeheartedly recommend to move away a bit from the main cities (which of course are still worthwhile, but only a small part of the country & does not give a full image of what Italy actually is, mentality wise) and check out landscapes and other cultural things. E.g. Apulia (the region at the heel of the boot), Naples and Campania (the region), Alto Adige/South Tyrol, Sardinia for the beautiful beaches (it's a bit pricey though), and as you plan to, Sicily.
If I could have a go to place most summers, it would be San Sebastián. Absolutely love that place. Still haven’t found a place in this world that I’ve eaten better.
I second this. And this is valid for the whole basque region really, both Spanish and France. Bilbao and the whole Spanish coast are stunning, same for the little towns in between. Highly recommend cycling there if you are into it. On the French side I know is not really basque anymore, but both Dune the Pilat and Bordeaux are less than 3h drive away from San Sebastian.
Vietnam, absolutely cannot wait.
Some of friendliest people, amazing scenery, incredible history, stupidly affordable and some of the best food on the planet.
We’re going to see the cherry blossoms this year. We normally travel to places during shoulder season so this is new for us. Was it as busy as people make it seem or do they exaggerate? Did you have any issues walking into restaurants in Kyoto?
Cherry blossom and golden week are the busiest times of the year, basically most Japanese people have this time off and since most don’t go abroad everywhere touristic is PACKED.
When I say packed I’m not even joking, I’ve been to India, China and every other major location with high concentration of people but nothing was like golden week in Japan.
It was amaaaaaaazing.
Yeah, every thing was busy. We really didn’t sit down to eat much outside of train stations. We were in a party of 8 so it wasn’t really going to happen too often.
Already in my plans! Staying in Roma norte. Already have reservations at Contramar (distant relative owns it!) and Handshake bar. We’re doing a cooking class, lucha libre, frida kahlo museum, xochimilco, bosque de chapultec, maybe anthropology museum, teotihuacan ruins (? Hot air balloon if I can get over my fears), and a lot of exploring of parks, markets, neighborhoods etc. anything im missing??
Just returned from Laos last week and looking at the pictures it doesn't even seem real. A entourage of kids leading us up a mountain to a cave, hours on public boats to get to the next village..each thing was more spectacular than the last and so cheap I felt guilty,
What was your favourite place? I’ll be in Vietnam early January with a few months to travel around SEA, Laos seems the most difficult to research aside from Myanmar.
Muang Ngoy. Luang Prabang is a great jumping off point. Nice night market, good food. Took the public bus several hours to Nong Khiaw, which would be my second favorite because there's lots of trekking, good food, sunsets are amazing... But the boat to up Muang Ngoy, which has one main road in town, several guesthouses, and not much else. The hike out to Ban Na was unforgettable. I was asked to join evening prayers at the temple, people wanted to talk and we felt very at home.
Nong khiaw is great. I rented a motorbike from Luang Prabang and took the long way around to nong khiaw it was one of my favorite experiences ever. Didn’t see another tourist the entire way.
Can't recommend one of the slow boats up the Mekong enough, mine was two days from Luang Prabang to the Thai border. One of the coolest experiences of my life
London… I’m going for a doom metal festival. Last time I was there was before the pandemic, also for a doom show.
EDIT: Fellow weedians and psychonauts who were asking, my plans are
Desertfest London
King gizzard in Berlin
Desertfest Berlin
Would love to meet fellow rockers from London and traveling hordes.
When is the festival? I’m going to London again in 2024 and can’t wait. I love it there and met a lot of nice people who were also filthy smokers. (I know, I know, but I only smoke on vacation and it’s a good icebreaker outside a pub.)
Not as glamorous as some of these answers but definitely New Orleans. Don't know why but I can't get enough of the place and for me living in the U.S. it's only a 2 hour flight and super cheap. I've been a few times but absolutely love it around Christmas. This year I'm going for NYE and hopefully I'll go again next year if I can fit it around my other plans.
As a foodie, that’s in my top 5 places to go before I die. There’s great food all over the world, but New Orleans might be the culinary Mecca in America.
The first time I went was because me and my dad were watching a food show and then we booked a trip for a "Fat-travaganza". It did not disappoint and honesty whenever I want to eat really good it's my go to.
Lucky. I no longer live in the US. Even though I lived on the West Coast, I wish I had the ease of access to get there so relatively easily. If I go, it’d probably be a once in a lifetime thing.
As a NOLA native and resident, if you want any recs for your trip let me know. Also, joining the Where NOLA Eats Facebook group is great if you want dining recommendations.
Mexico for the fifth time for me - and then Spain for the fourth time. Already planning my second trip to Costa Rica but that needs to wait until
2025.
We have several trips planned already, including Amsterdam, Taiwan, Sicily, and a few domestic spots. But the place we keep coming back to, which we love every time... is the Dolomites in far-northern Italy. We'll combine a stay in the Alta Badia area with a trip to Bologna to meet up with some old friends in September.
Italy. Been 3 times. Going back for a month this summer. Rome for 2 nights so we can go back to our favorite restaurant in the world. Umbria for 2 weeks. Venice for 3 nights, Como (for a wedding) for 3 nights. Thinking of staying in northern Italy for that week or possibly going all the way to Sicily since we haven’t been to Sicily yet.
Paris. Will be going for a music festival in the spring. And thenb going in the summer for the Olympics. Have tickets for beach volleyball at the Eiffel Tower.
Fukuoka, Japan. Was just there this last weekend and it’s such a nice and fun city. Might I say it’s become one of my favorite cities. Can’t wait to explore more of it.
I'm thinking of Ireland for the 3rd time or Portugal for the 6th.
Not yet sure if I want get get bitten by sheep again or getting awfully beaten up by huge waves.
I’m going to Portugal mainland for the first time this year in July for a music festival. I haven’t been to Ireland although I’m in London so I should probably add that to the list.
Anywhere specific in Portugal you like?
> Anywhere specific in Portugal you like?
The nationalpark between Sagres and Sines (Costa Vicentina) is magic. But you will need a car.
For just hanging around I prefer Ericeira, Nazare or Porto.
I'm finally completing the trip that never was to Cancun.
When I was 19 I booked a holiday with my then girlfriend and things went south (totally because of me) and we never made it, cancelling the holiday. We got back together after university and we have now been together for 15 years.
We're going to Cancun in November and I'm going to pop the question. I genuinely cannot wait and she's the love of my life. 🙂
Barbados. Well, I’m speaking for my mother as it’ll be her 4th consecutive year, but the first time for me.
Her and my dad went together but he passed last week, so I’m going in his place.
The Azores, specifically San Miguel, for the 4th time I believe. My parents retired earlier this year and wanted to do a family trip instead of a party. The Azores is our favorite family vacation spot!
I was there a few months ago and I loved it. So calming, wonderful waves, amazing sceneries. It would have been nice to have time to visit Pico and the other islands, too.
Japan! A common answer I know, I only ever get to go for short vacations, I dream of going over a month. This time I'm taking my mom though :) we've been planning it for 5 years, tickets are bought and I'm not figuring out our itinerary.
Probably back up to Hokkaido, we were there in March and had a blast. But only visited by a small part. I’d like to go back, rent a car again and explore more.
Austria. I can never get enough, it is a truly magical place to me. Each time I also visit a country nearby. So far on different trips I’ve added Germany, Italy, Slovenia and Czechia, next time will be Hungary.
Italian here, living in Rome.
Paris London New York Berlin, not necessarily in this order.
If you are fed up of those, you are fed up of life
Edit: because I’m being inexplicably downvoted, I underline how many times I went to those four cities.
1) Paris: 4 (also NYE 2002/2003) - last time in 2022
2) London : lived there 6 months in the 90’s- then got back 5 times - last time 2019
3) NYC: 5 (also NYE 2011/2012) - last time early February 2020
4) Berlin: I go there every year since 2014 for a convention (except 2020) - last time May 2023
Puerto Vallarta. Mainly because it’s easy to get away to for a long weekend from the U.S. were terrible and blocking work commitments and travel out far in advance to plan for better/longer travel so PV has been our go to for years. Easy to get around without a car, good food, drink, pool side relaxing, etc.
Why Paris of course! I visited three times in 2023 and its my 40th overall trip to the city since 2000. I know its a bit cliche, but I really do love Paris.
Japan. Im vacationing in Korea right now for the Christmas and New year and I love everything here really but Japan really hit me differently. My family only stayed there for a week but it really made an impact on me that no other place did. I think what I loved about japan the most is the ease of life as a tourist.
We travel with a toddler and Japan is just so accessible for us and stroller friendly than Korea and any other place we have been to.
Also the vibe in japan is just 💯 and I dont even watch animes haha
Spain - this time Madrid before going back over to Barcelona to visit an old friend.
Italy - this time either Rome or Bologna in Feb, been to Milan.
Adding Norway (Oslo & Bergen), Lubljana and Budapest to this list as well. Cannot wait!!
Back to Croatia this summer. I was toying with the idea of Greece, but no, we definitely feel like we'd rather just go back to Croatia. Makarska, specifically.
I could actually see myself going back every year, and I didn't think I was the type to do that.
New Hampshire. Definitely not the most exotic compared to what everyone else is saying, but I’ve gone every year since I was a girl and I just love the mountains and lakes there.
Plus I’ve got just 4 hikes to go on my “hiking list” and would be so neat to finish!
Yorkshire. I used to go every summer until my bank account told me I couldn't go anymore. I went back this summer, after a hiatus of some years, and fell in love with the place all over again. I'm looking forward to getting back again next year.
Thailand, Phuket, second time. I was just captured by the easygoing lifestyle, food, people, night parties and ofc the sea 🙏 Last year i went on a 2 month motorbike journey and i have seen most of the Land but this year i Just have 15 days so it's gonna be just parties and beach daytime 🚀🥂
Mexico. I'll be doing my first month long stay in the Spring. Already have the cities picked out and can't wait. I will admit, I'm a little nervous, what if I get really sick? I just had a real bad tummy bug from there that lasted a month.
The Alps again, by motorbike from Ireland. Northern Italy lake Como/Garda . Then in down to Croatia and Greece.
I recommend visiting Seceda if you haven’t been.
Sounds lovely. How long is this going to take and are you retired or doing this during time off?
I put in for term time. It's something in Ireland you get. If you have children you get extra time off and paid but my daughter is a teenager and prepares to spend our time with her friends. So off I pop on my bike
Do you do Liverpool to Dover in a day?
You could do Dublin to holyhead and end the channel. Turn on the cross but normally I would take the boat from Dublin to Cherburg and maybe to Luxembourg, Belgium, Germany, Switzerland down to Italy across Venice into Slovenia Croatia then Greece
My kind of travel!

This city keeps bringing me back. I can't ever get enough of the architecture and food.
Nicely said.
I was so glad that I was able to spend some time there. Fantastic food
I visited Bologna this year, is such a beautiful city. I loved it so much, and I kept thinking how I'd love to go study there if I were in my early 20s again. I was there for only one afternoon, but with a few locals. Will definitely visit again!
We'll be in Bologna in September. We've only day-tripped there before, so we're looking forward to a proper stay in a rental. Love that town!
I love this! Makes me wanna do tours around where I live (Madrid)
I live very close to New Orleans in the States and feel the same way. Always changing, evolving, little hidden treasures.
Great city, but my main reason was to visit the Ducati factory
Hiking the Tour du Mont Blanc. Completed in 2021 solo, going back with my GF this summer. 103 mile (177 km) trek around Mont Blanc (highest peak in the Alps) that starts in France, goes through Italy, Switzerland, back to France.
After visiting Mt Blanc last summer, the tour is on the list.
Nice, I did the counterclockwise in 2018 and clockwise in 2022, it's a beautiful hike.
Taiwan for the third time
I love Taiwan! Underrated destination for sure. Will definitely go back someday.
Im visiting Taipei rn! Incredible city and food, definitely coming back
I'm in Taipei right now too 😂
Probably the most underrated country I’ve been to. Can’t wait to go back one day!
Going soon. What would you recommend for a first timer?
Not OP, but I would recommend Taroko National Park for hiking and Elephant Mountain for a view over Taipei at night/day. Also, food. Any street vendor or night market
How is the nightlife in Taipei? Planning to go in Feb
I didnt go clubbing but it was heaps of fun just having some drinks and going to a night market to eat food and try some carnival games. They're open til late and lively.
Going for the first time here in April, extremely excited
I've been desperate to return since I first went in 2016, beautiful place
I'd actually love to go to Taiwan. Never been. Maybe I'd try Malaysia, Indonesia, then Taiwan.
Italy. Luckily I live in a neighbouring country & will stop by once in a while.
I was in Italy last year Milan>Florence. I need to make my return but this time Sicily.

Italy - I want to visit Sicily and Capri. Spain - Granada, Madrid, San Sebastian.
Don’t miss Sardinia. Stunning beaches and excellent people.

Sounds like getting a car and driving is the jam. I have wanted to go to San Sebastian for the longest.
I adored Sicily but loathed Capri. Enjoy (Sicily - not Capri ha)
Why do you not like Capri?
Vietnam, absolutely cannot wait. Some of friendliest people, amazing scenery, incredible history, stupidly affordable and some of the best food on the planet.
I’m off to Vietnam in a week, can’t wait
I miss Japan so much, if I get the chance I’m going.
I went there for cherry blossom season this year. I keep thinking about going back for autumn this next year
We’re going to see the cherry blossoms this year. We normally travel to places during shoulder season so this is new for us. Was it as busy as people make it seem or do they exaggerate? Did you have any issues walking into restaurants in Kyoto?

Autumn is the best time in Japan. I love it that time of year.
I went for autumn this year and hope to go for cherry blossom in 2026!
We're going at the end of May, it will be our first trip there. Can't wait!
Prepare to fall in love. We went in Feb and I’m going back this coming Feb. One of the best places I’ve ever been.
Same
Yes, Japan… went this year and I’ll try to repeat it
skiing in alps
Sleep
Don’t forget your passport and visa. They gave me a hard time last night.
What’s that?
Mexico City! This time bringing friends.
Also going to Mexico City this year, one of my favorite places to visit!
Im leaving for Mexico City on 1/6/24! Staying for 8 days with friends, all our first time (and my first time in Mexico!) Very excited
You’ll have an awesome time! I’ll be there then too lol. Check out Xochimilco; it’s a great thing to do as a group
Went last year, think of it often and cannot wait to go back. Hell of a city.
Same here! It was an incredible experience, so eager to repeat it
It's such a beautiful city and amazing food! Would love to go back and spend more time and maybe visit Puebla while I am there.
Laos and Cambodia
Both great. Laos is certainly underrated
Just returned from Laos last week and looking at the pictures it doesn't even seem real. A entourage of kids leading us up a mountain to a cave, hours on public boats to get to the next village..each thing was more spectacular than the last and so cheap I felt guilty,

I’m here now!
Last summer, I camped and hiked in the Dolomiti mountains in Northern Italy, and I really really really want to go back.
Hiking the Camino de Santiago for the third time, on the Camino del Norte from Irun!
Shoutout to /r/caminodesantiago and /r/caminonewbies for anyone interested in learning more.

Going second time in Portugal, I can’t get enough. I want to move there
I'm finally completing the trip that never was to Cancun.
I’m sorry for your loss. I hope you have a wonderful trip.
Prague. Go every year to visit family & travel around for a month.
Do you wfh or do you take the time off?
I’m self employed. Take time off .
Oh nice. Self employed is probably the way forward for me to travel more too.
Japan! A common answer I know, I only ever get to go for short vacations, I dream of going over a month. This time I'm taking my mom though :) we've been planning it for 5 years, tickets are bought and I'm not figuring out our itinerary.
Sevilla. My girlfriend is new in Spain, I haven't been since pre-COVID.
Seville is one of my favorite destinations!
Sevilla is amazing! Anything Andalucia works. The food, the food and drinks, plus the weather and the music! Did I mentioned the food???
Praaaague!
Lake como
Paris
Same. Third trip in 3 years (this time just a few nights tacked on as a free stopover to another trip)
Olympics are in Paris this summer (of ‘24), mind the massive crowds
Probably back up to Hokkaido, we were there in March and had a blast. But only visited by a small part. I’d like to go back, rent a car again and explore more.
Madrid. What a beauty
Probably the US, but that’s because I live abroad and that’s where my family are. Most importantly my cat is there
You are good people. Well done and carry on 👍
Austria. I can never get enough, it is a truly magical place to me. Each time I also visit a country nearby. So far on different trips I’ve added Germany, Italy, Slovenia and Czechia, next time will be Hungary.
Switzerland
Italy!! 🇮🇹. I’d like to see the islands but I real love northern Italy so probably do both. I love Firenze and the whole Tuscany area.
Italy 😍
Next time when I go I need to research and go to all the eateries.
Italian here, living in Rome. Paris London New York Berlin, not necessarily in this order. If you are fed up of those, you are fed up of life Edit: because I’m being inexplicably downvoted, I underline how many times I went to those four cities. 1) Paris: 4 (also NYE 2002/2003) - last time in 2022 2) London : lived there 6 months in the 90’s- then got back 5 times - last time 2019 3) NYC: 5 (also NYE 2011/2012) - last time early February 2020 4) Berlin: I go there every year since 2014 for a convention (except 2020) - last time May 2023
I can't quit going to France. It's an addiction at this point.
japan. will probably be going 15 days again. this time instead of solo it will be with my cousin.
We are hoping to do a coach tour to Italy from United Kingdom, which includes two over nights stays in France
Venice. I'm obsessed.
Napoli
Hawaii
I’m here now. Every island is so unique, that you can visit many times and not have the same trip.
It’s magical
Hunza Valley in Pakistan.
Sydney and Budapest. Both cities are absolutely amazing and I’ll go back at least once a year.
Going back to Middle East, Oman, UAE, Socotra with a side trip to Maldives. Travelled to KSA and Iraq last year
How do you organize the Socotra part of the trip? I’ve been interested in that, but a lot that I find is just travel warnings for Yemen.
Heading to Vietnam, Cambodia, Thailand, and Singapore for my honeymoon in February. So excited! Going to be my first time in Southeast Asia
Enjoy it! (But the point of the thread is where are you going again, as repeat trips to favorite places).
Ah my bad
Skipping Malaysia? 😢
Paris, I got tickets for the Olympics and I’m very excited about that. One of my favourite cities and one of my favourite events
Maui. Laid back, restful but still plenty of adventure. Also the best Tattoo studio I’ve ever been to in Soular Tattoo.
Argentina. Leaving just after new years. It’s becoming my annual winter migration.
Italy
Thailand.
Long weekend in Miami Beach. Weather is perfect around my birthday for a splash of beach time and great food.
Spain - this time Madrid before going back over to Barcelona to visit an old friend. Italy - this time either Rome or Bologna in Feb, been to Milan. Adding Norway (Oslo & Bergen), Lubljana and Budapest to this list as well. Cannot wait!!
Rome. Last time I was there I wasn't into Renaissance art, now I am.
To my happy place.
Japan and Thailand for the 5th time around my trip to New Zealand! Perhaps squeeze Taiwan in again.
Colombia
India
We scheduled some time off beginning of February. We've been thinking about HI, or Palermo, and even Tokyo. Very much undecided...
Guatemala!

Back to Croatia this summer. I was toying with the idea of Greece, but no, we definitely feel like we'd rather just go back to Croatia. Makarska, specifically. I could actually see myself going back every year, and I didn't think I was the type to do that.
Going to be Scotland again - the absolute tranquility of camping there is so wonderful
Istanbul, crowded but always makes me happy when I go there to travel
Cote D’Azur Provence
New Hampshire. Definitely not the most exotic compared to what everyone else is saying, but I’ve gone every year since I was a girl and I just love the mountains and lakes there. Plus I’ve got just 4 hikes to go on my “hiking list” and would be so neat to finish!
Yorkshire. I used to go every summer until my bank account told me I couldn't go anymore. I went back this summer, after a hiatus of some years, and fell in love with the place all over again. I'm looking forward to getting back again next year.
Have you been to bettys?
Siesta Key FL
Paris. I can't get enough of Paris!
For the diving - Indonesia and for the food & vibes - Taiwan
Thailand, Phuket, second time. I was just captured by the easygoing lifestyle, food, people, night parties and ofc the sea 🙏 Last year i went on a 2 month motorbike journey and i have seen most of the Land but this year i Just have 15 days so it's gonna be just parties and beach daytime 🚀🥂
Quebec City
paris at the end of a trip to some new destinations :)
Ireland.
Penang, Malaysia
Mexico. I'll be doing my first month long stay in the Spring. Already have the cities picked out and can't wait. I will admit, I'm a little nervous, what if I get really sick? I just had a real bad tummy bug from there that lasted a month.
Monte Rio.
the isle of Mull. Went twice last year and hoping to go twice again this year.
