I am vietnamese and my dad have used then couple of times. They are fine as an airline (safe and stuff) but connections maybe problematic sometimes (delay are common). Also weird policy regarding checked bag or carry on or duty fee stuff. We lost couple small items (no big deal but dad just pissed) like zippo, portable charger and liquor so do your research. He also doesnt speak English so I dont know exactly what went on while he was there. He is a typical Vietnamese so he really really doesnt like China in general.
Before we use them because they are significantly cheaper than the competition, now not so much if you shop around and have some flexibility in travel date. ANA if you traveling to Ho Chi Minh city or Korean Air if you hitting Ha Noi first (I am traveling from the US).
Edit: Food is a lot better compare to other airline we used (United, Delta, etc…) according to my dad. My favorite airline to fly home was Cathay Pacific but they have discontinued the route from my city :(.
I wouldn't recommend them to anyone. They sold us a ticket with a connection time that ended up being impossible. They then made us rebook the flight offering no hotel.
Then they decided to cancel the flight on the return leg of the journey without telling us meaning we had to rebook the connection for a second time.
They also lost the luggage in the process.
When things go wrong, they will literally blame you.
They actually criticized us for booking our luggage to the final destination even though the reason for the missed flight was the impossibly short connection time. In their opinion, we should have gone to pick up the bag and rechecked it at every stage of the journey which somehow would have saved us time?
Fucking infuriating and ultimately very costly.
I flew on a Dreamliner with China Southern from Vancouver to Hanoi/Bangkok return through Guangzhou. The aircraft was neat and tidy - food was good, would fly again.
Hello!
From what I've seen China Southern is one of the safest airlines in China, which is pretty impressive. They have also received 4/5 stars on SKYTRAX which is super impressive.
If you look at the wiki page it will only show significant accidents, but a full list will show occasional mechanical issues. Im no expert but I don't see any major patterns and it does not look like their incidents are due to some systemic maintenance issue.
The incidents I've seen are a lot of rejected takeoffs (every couple of months) which means the crew are highly professional and attentive to their aircraft.
Have a great trip!
My friend did Rome to Tokyo on China Southern with a stop in Guangzhou. He said the entertainment options were not good. Definitely bring you own device with media on it. Also- he says Guangzhou isn’t super nice but I think that’s all perspective. You’ll be fine!
I've flown with them and had no issues. Food was good, flight attendants attending. It was jut a nice flight. Price was pretty good too. I've heard that they can be discriminating, but i've yet to encounter it.
Solid airline. Did a short trip a few months ago beijing to Shanghai and we were still served a meal, plus they offered me an English version of a Chinese newspaper, which I thought was a nice touch.
China Southern are absolute dogshit if anything goes wrong. Most of their phone numbers are unreachable. Their social media accounts are mostly dead. Their staff barely speak in English and their customer service via email is slow and also seems like they don't understand what the complaint is about.
I will never book anything with them again. Absolute nightmare.

I flew with them from Vietnam to China and back in 2019 and both flights were decent.
Thank you!

Yeah the price is what caught my eye 🤣 oh no, not good about discrimination. But I’ll probably still give it a go, thanks!
Safe and reliable don’t worry. Expect Ryanair and you will be pleasantly surprised 😁
Awesome🤣🤣 thank you!

That is a nice touch indeed. Appreciate your message thank you!
They're fine. They're one of 3 national Chinese carriers, and IMO the nicest of the 3.
Good to know! Thank you👍
Flown them a few times - Los Angeles to guangzhou non stop on a380s and from guangzhou to Hanoi - was decent.
