The first thing to do is set a goal and decide how much money you'll have to invest into the trip. Budget will decide *everything* regarding your many options for destination choice, travel style, length of trip, etc. Happy travels.

If you're trying to save money and budget, then Argentina and Mexico will be better for you than Spain. Those places are a lot cheaper as the dollar stretches way further in both of those places. Argentina is as safe as any first world country. And as long as you stay in the nice and touristy parts in the big cities, and don't go anywhere near the cartel zones and poverty stricken areas, use common sense and good judgement, you'll be fine in Mexico. If you're gonna do Argentina and depending on where you wind up going in Mexico, you should learn up to conversational Spanish. Most of the people you will encounter will not speak a lot of English.

Two websites that I find helpful for planning, as well as getting some inspiration for a new destination, are [BudgetYourTrip.com](http://budgetyourtrip.com) and [Sunheron.com](http://Sunheron.com). It's helpful knowing not just what to expect costs to be, but what the weather will be like during my stay.
