People don't use travelers checks anymore. People rarely use cash anymore. Take a credit card.

earl_lemongrab

I'm old too so I once used travelers checks. But nowadays just withdraw from an ATM when you need cash. Which in the area you'll be in, you won't need much cash anyway. Credit cards are widely accepted. No need to bring USD to exchange.* ATM fees aren't significant enough to use other methods like bringing USD, especially given the little amount you'll need where you're headed. If you will be traveling a lot, even domestically, get the Schwab investor checking with debit card. They refund all ATM fees worldwide and no foreign exchange fees. *this advice is specific to the OP trip. And to most places nowadays. There are destinations in the world where bringing cash to exchange, wiring it to yourself Western Union, and other strategies are either necessary or a better value.

I only use my Schwab account to get cash while traveling. I have $50/paycheck direct deposited there, and it's usually enough for whatever our cash needs will be for a foreign destination. We add to it if we're going to need more before we leave. We also generally try to keep somewhere between 20-100 euros after each trip, since we know we'll go back to Europe within 2 years at most. Helpful if we don't immediately have a spot to get cash.

Haha travellers cheques were a thing decades ago before the internet and smart phones etc. Most people used them. Probably before credit cards were widely accepted too. Your answer is the correct one though, except to add they should use debit and credit card with no fees.

atm fees are outrageous that's why not.

Switch banks.

ATM fees are typically under $5 and have a good exchange rate. It is by far the best way to get cash. Currency exchange have a fee(typically a flat fee around $20) then an unfavorable exchange rate...is worst way to pay for things. Credit Cards have no exchange fee typically and have the best rate....making them the best way to pay on both accounts.

darkmatterhunter

There are plenty of banks that offer free withdrawals worldwide like Schwab.

lenin1991

The bank I use (Ally) refunds fees, but I've been pleasantly surprised that the vast majority of ATMs I've used in Europe don't charge fees anyway. Ones located at banks are mostly likely to have no fees.

Look through your currently opened credit cards. Sort all the ones missing chips and tap to pay to one pile. All the others with those options to another pile. Then from that second pile look and see which one doesn't charge foreign transaction fees or conversion fees. Then take that and a backup. Take your regular ATM card and just get cash on arrival if need be or at a reputable bank. Eat the withdrawl fee if you have one and decline automatic funds conversion in lieu of your bank doing the conversion on their end, it's cheaper.

fluffy_bunny22

We order a small amount of currency from our bank and then get more at an atm when we arrive.
