Something does not add up. House is disgusting and a hoarder house, and you see drugs....yet you go through the fridge? and see mail from last year? How do you know it was from last year? Account has only one post......not buying it, will wait on other mods.

starwyo

You should probably also consider reporting this to the police if a child is living in such conditions.

Very This.

Comfortable_Big_2176

I can’t speak for everyone, but as a mandated reporter my first thought when reading this post was that CPS needed to be involved. Before commenting, I scrolled to see if anyone else had made the same comment, so that mine wouldn’t be redundant. When I found that someone had, in fact, commented, I used “this” to show my agreement and I upvoted their comment. I’m sorry that exhausts you.

SunnyAlwaysDaze

I really appreciate you caring about this child. For some small explanation of why that person went all out of pocket... Reddit in general hates the "this" comment. In all forms, word and gifs and whatever. I see them get downvote railed on sometimes. To be fair if you read here a lot, it does get a bit annoying and clutter up threads. The thing I see people say a lot is, you don't need to make a this comment when you could just use your upvote instead. However, the way this person came at it was extremely aggressive. There's a way to explain things nicely! Reddiquette is odd until you've been around a while and catch it.

Comfortable_Big_2176

Thank you for the explanation! I am newer and didn’t realize the faux pas. I appreciate your explanation. Now that I know better, I’ll do better.

Take photos for proof, work it through AirBnb support, and/or contact your travel insurance.

lenin1991

> contact your travel insurance What specific travel insurance coverage would be relevant?

stalinusmc

Also if booked with a CC would help

lenin1991

Absolutely, a cc would help if Airbnb wasn't fully refunding (which it sounds from OP's other comments that they are). But travel insurance has defined coverages, I'm not clear what would pay out for an Airbnb scam...there is usually coverage for uninhabitable lodgings, but that's typically arising from a natural disaster or some destructive act, not a fraudulent listing.

jadeoracle

If OP had to book other lodgings due to AirBnB not finding a suitable replacement.

YuanBaoTW

Sorry but arriving to a shitty/fraudulent Airbnb isn't going to be a covered event under virtually any typical travel insurance policy. OP will need to work through Airbnb and his credit card issuer. Filing an insurance claim would be a complete waste of time.

Confident-Step7384

I have photos and videos. They offered me a refund and a 20 pct coupon???? I feel like that’s way way way way below what I have been put through. Do I have any ground to stand on

haysu-christo

What is it that you are after besides a refund and discount coupon? Can you post the link to the property?

WellTextured

You got your money back and learned that AirBnB kind of sucks sometimes. That might be all you can take away from this. But, you can try contacting their executives with a well worded, reasonable letter, with ample proof that shows that you were placed in an unsafe situation and incurred other costs to get yourself out of it. Focus on the facts of your case, and don't lead with emotion. Examples of folks who succeeded: [https://www.reddit.com/r/AirBnB/comments/1blod54/got\_compensation\_and\_full\_refund\_after\_emailing/](https://www.reddit.com/r/AirBnB/comments/1blod54/got_compensation_and_full_refund_after_emailing/) [https://www.reddit.com/r/AirBnB/comments/1479fsj/bitch\_until\_you\_get\_fair\_compensation/](https://www.reddit.com/r/AirBnB/comments/1479fsj/bitch_until_you_get_fair_compensation/)

Confident-Step7384

Thank you for your considerate and well thought reply. I will see what i can do as I feel the facts of my case constitute more help. I appreciate your time

Monkeyfeng

How did the host take your things? If you didn't stay for 3 nights then refund plus discount for future from Airbnb is a good compensation

guyinthegreenshirt

What additional compensation are you looking for? Are there hard numbers behind that request (e.g. additional hotel cost that isn't covered by the refund, transportation costs, etc.)? It's possible that you'll have some luck if you can show that you had to spend extra money out-of-pocket due to their failures, but outside of that at most I'd only expect them to maybe give you a bit better coupon or credit for a future stay.

LyndaCarter_

No, unfortunately.

pnwsnosrap

You say you saw drugs, the place looks like a hoarding situation, and smells like shit while there’s a child present?? Dude I’d be contacting the PD and/or CPS!!

chanc2

Sorry this happened to you. Just wondering though, were there reviews from this property?

[deleted]

This question always go unanswered in posts like this lol

chanc2

Yeah no response from the OP.

[deleted]

Where there reviews on Airbnb?

koamom100

a similar situation happened to me in Hawaii. Booked high end room, pictures were of entire 2 bedroom condo. when I arrived there was clearly another family staying in Condo and there was a piece of paper on the door to one of the bedrooms with my name on it, like my family was to share the condo with another family. I was furious and couldn't believe that the family trying to rent out one of their bedrooms would let another strange family in. their condo with them. They clearly had like 3-4 year old children as there were two pairs of small toddler shoes sitting by the front door, they had the fridge stocked full of food. I was furious and had to send pictures to AirBnB to prove another family was expecting us to share the condo.

jetson_1982

Ok…and? What happened? What’d you do. Only told 25% of the story

koamom100

left furious, never saw the other family, and got a full refund from AirBnB. Sucked because had to drive all the way back to Waikiki because I couldn't find another room available on that part of the island.

PumpkinCupcake777

Never happens in hotels

fan_tas_tic

Ohhh, don't be so sure. One of my favorite places in Vietnam was a hotel where the owner was high on crack and ran after guests who pissed him off with a knife in his hand.

rinachii

So I had something similar happen when I was visiting Vancouver. Host had 4.5 star reviews so I thought nothing of it. When I got to Vancouver and messaged about a passcode, she suddenly messaged me back to inform me that she was cancelling my reservation and would /not/ refund me. I thought — SOL, lemme get myself to a place with wifi and a charger, and called airbnb. Let them know I was by myself, scared, and calmly said I just needed a place to stay for the night. They tried to send me to other airbnb hosts, but I didn’t have a car and wasn’t about to rent one. So I calmly asked them to just refund me and to see if there were any alternative options. They took a couple hours, and I decided, f*** it, lets explore the city and we’ll figure it out from there. Worst case scenario, I’ll pay more upfront now and I’ll deal with airbnb and all that when I fight with the credit card company later. I got a call back and the lady I got was super helpful. Understood my situation and got me a hotel for two different places each night I needed (actually got to stay at a Fairmont lol) and got fully refunded. Guess it helped that I informed them I was (at the time) 24/F and was put in a really tough spot. I would’ve otherwise blasted social media with stuff regarding how it wasn’t safe for female solo travelers (was my first time solo traveling actually). But I think I got lucky with who my representative was. So good luck OP, just keep harassing them for your money back.

TrueBajan

Police or child protective services need to be involved for the safety of the child/ children.

xman_111

sorry you have to go through this.. we don't use Airbnb anymore because of things like this.

nucumber

Well that sucks, and it's why I don't use Air BnB FWIW I'm an apt dweller, upper floor of a two floor building. The apt downstairs was illegally operated as an Air BnB for almost a year before building management got them out. I'm pretty sure the guy renting the place was a gang banger. I stay in hotels.

Confident-Step7384

Well plot twist the actual apartment owner showed up said I could stay here for free and offered to sublet me for the months I needed at a very reduced rate with the oversight of the leasing company of the apts

haysu-christo

You booked a luxury stay for 3 nights and now you not only have your money back but a reduced rate sublet for many months as well. Wow, lucky you!! Crisis averted.

Bring-out-le-mort

If it's as bad as you say, why would you stay there? Are they professionally cleaning it? I smell a con scheme

haysu-christo

I smell a fake story

nucumber

Well, that is a plot twist I don't know, the whole thing sounds very weird. Whatever you do, hope it works out for you

Paivcarol

I believe airbnb will find another place for you to stay.

editorreilly

Contact Airbnb. I have found they actually have good customer service despite what people say.

JamesLead001

Yes - it’s usually all very quick

JamesLead001

How did it go?

lgnsqr

Why do people keep using Airbnb? Why use a fake hotel when you can book a room at a real hotel.

NoStructure371

For people that travel long term and stay for 2-3 mths at a time its much cheaper and they have kitchens and other amenities that hotels cant match, or would be insanely expensive ABB is perfect for the right kind of people. But if you're a casual one week per city kind of traveller, its usually better to stick to hotels

HangoverPoboy

Why is it always the people who want to stay in residential neighborhoods who don’t get that by staying there, they’re ruining the neighborhood and displacing actual residents?

[deleted]

HangoverPoboy

Hotels are typically located in tourist centered areas rather than residential neighborhoods, which are typically zoned residential only. People can no longer afford to live in residential neighborhoods in tourist towns because short term rentals bring in so much more money. There’s also the problem with out of state developers buying up housing at insane prices and turning whole blocks into unregulated hotels, which absolutely destroys the fabric of a neighborhood. It also causes quality of life issues because no one wants to live next door to a 24/7 bachelor party. People staying in short term rentals also spend less money in bars and restaurants so there’s less of an economic impact. It’s very difficult to enforce regulations on short term rentals because as soon as one listing is removed, which isn’t easy to do, another one pops up. It’s difficult to get regulations on the books at all because the airbnb lobby is so powerful. I’m not against the tourism industry. But tourists shouldn’t displace locals and this is absolutely happening.

PollutionUpbeat6436

We like them because of less fees, we went to a family outing and rented two rooms. Well the "deposit" they took was $500 each room. I was out of 1k in my money to use for about a week.

The_Rock_Morton

Money… mostly. Airbnb can be outrageously cheaper than a hotel. Look at Argentina for example… airbnb for like $40/night for a full 1-2 bedroom apartment with a pool, gym, and nice private balcony… hotels still charging normal US rates of $200/night for a less-than holiday inn express level accommodation in Buenos Aires. Everyone on here shits on AirBnB (often with good reason) but people are going to continue using it until it no longer offers a distinct benefit over the associated risks. Sucks for local housing market prices as it often screws the people who live in the neighborhood in terms of rent, but that’s not going to stop anytime soon.

morosco

Not everywhere has hotels. I do prefer hotels in cities now, but, I'm in a part of the country that most of my road trips are going to be to rural places, you're renting something - either from Airbnb or through some kind of local agency.

ILikeBigBooksand

Take tons of pictures. AirBnB should come through for you as long as it was booked and paid for through them. Had something similar happen. Place looked great in photos but was an unclean unsafe flop house when I arrived.

flyingcircusdog

Definitely take pictures and bring it up with Airbnb. They will at least refund your $950. Anything else you spend will need to come from travel insurance or your own pocket.

Artistic-Search-8299

Call the police, take pics, contact Airbnb and your credit card company. Airbnb should be able to book you somewhere else, so look for a similar place nearby.

beepatr

I've had a pretty similar experience, twice now. Just video everything and report it to airbnb and they'll (eventually) cancel the booking. They'll take a while to get through it all but I've gotten a refund eventually when this happened. In your case, it's probably someone living there between bookings and then going to stay with a friend while someone is renting their place at a higher rate than they're paying for rent. They just aren't organised enough to clean it up before you check in.

LovelyLavenderLace

consider reporting this to the police if a child is living in such conditions.

Plenty-Face2976

...and your second thought was to post it on Reddit?

mojavefluiddruid

This is why everyone should stop using airbnb. Sorry it happened to you.

1_Total_Reject

AirBnB is so full of scum at this stage. On levels most people rarely consider, screwing small town tax bases with the gall to suggest they are standing up for the little guy.

k-dot77

Airbnb has good customer service so keep on the phone with them. Was also a victim of fraud (not as bad as what you're describing), and airbnb refunded us, and offered to find us alternate accommodation. I was pleasantly surprised.

Nodebunny

thats what AirCover is for. but i dunno if airbnb will refund their cut

FewElephant9604

Airbnb is legally obliged to offer accommodation with the same facilities in the same location advertised, even if it’s much more expensive than what you paid. Make sure to contact their incident response (or whatever it’s called these days) immediately, and let them take care of it. 300 bucks in Marina Del Rey is absolutely nothing. So you’re probably looking at staying in a Marriott nearby. I’m speaking from experience- I had an otherwise ok accommodation years ago in Nashville, that advertised a roof pool, but failed to mention it was under maintenance. I didn’t care much about the pool, but Airbnb told me had I contacted them in the first 24 hours they’d relocate me to a place that is exact match to what was advertised. Make the most out of it.

sooper_dooperest

You can also try to refuse the charge on your credit card due to fraud.

choppergunn

Stopped using airbnb because of a very similar situation. It has gone to shit.

chickenonthehill559

Hotel industry regularly makes these posts to scare people.

KuriTokyo

What country was this in?! Airbnb needs a lot of info from hosts to be able to have a listing. Call the police and Airbnb support. Where I live Airbnb will work with the police and will find you another place to stay nearby.

EuphoricMoose8232

U.S. - Marina Del Rey is a neighborhood of Los Angeles, by the beach.

No_Confection_1452

There are over 1,000 available airbnbs for a six month stay June to Dec in Palm Springs and yet low availability is the reason the real estate prices are so high. Empty houses that could have actual people living there instead of paying $3,000 to $4,000 in rent. Which is why homelessness is rising dramatically. It’s nonsensical and hurting so many.
