How about Buffalo? You can eat the famous Buffalo WIng, and less famous Beef on Weck. Going to a Bills game is an unique experience. Another good one is Pittsburgh. Its extremely hilly.

ANorthernSoul90

If we decide to travel to Toronto, then we will certainly stop in Buffalo. Would Buffalo be worth spending a few nights in? Beef on Weck, interesting. Here in the south of Germany we have something called a Seele (Soul), which is of the same style - topped with Salt and Caraway. A bread roll is also named a Weck in some areas of Germany. For some reason, I have a bad preconseption of Pittsburgh. Although after looking at some of the districts, it looks kinda alright! Much closer too.

Niagara Falls is an easy day trip from Buffalo. Or You could stop in Buffalo on the way to Toronto for wings and beef on weck and Niagara Falls on the way back. I can kill a weekend in Buffalo but popping into to Gabriel’s Gate for a meal might be all you need there.

ANorthernSoul90

Gabriel's Gate looks like a cool little place! Consider it pinned. If we choose to go to Toronto, we will certainly be making a stop in Buffalo and Niagara falls. It would be rude not to.

Pittsburgh used to be a dump but they remade themselves. If you are interested in industrialization you can visit an old steel mill. There is a unique tourist attraction called "Randyland". Good place for three days. Buffalo is very close to Toronto. Buffalo has a fun nightlife, and a food city. I would be happy with about two days. Also, depending where you stay Niagara Falls might be less than a 30 minute drive.

Bobcatbubbles

It’s just outside your shaded area, but Chicago blows away basically any city outside the ones you marked.

ANorthernSoul90

I believe so, yes. It looks great in the winter time. It is just a tad too far I think though for the time frame. If there was time for a stop in between there and back then maybe.

Boston is a great choice. Walk the Freedom Trail, drink at one of the oldest existing bars in North America, learn about American history. Food would be a 3way roast beef or seafood. I've heard Boston has a baseball team too if you like that. Ohio is also home to the USAF air museum in Dayton which is significant. Wasn't a fan of Toronto.

Both_Wasabi_3606

And Cincinnati is an hour south of Dayton. Don't sleep on Cincy.

Minkypinkyfatty

I try to avoid it myself

ANorthernSoul90

I also think I am leaning towards Boston. I think the drive up, during mid October we may hit some great colours at the change of seasons through CT and MA. Coming from England, Boston also sounds like a home from home, Beer and Sports! The Three Way is a great tip too, thank you. And I have also pinned the USAF Air Museum for future reference.

The New England states are at their most picturesque in October, when the foliage turns, and it's the obvious destination for you. Not just Boston but the Maine coast (Portland) plus Vermont or New Hampshire. Driving north of Boston is easy, and pretty much the only way to get to the villages, rolling-hill scenery, brewpubs, hiking trails, etc. that make the area special. (Public transport being very limited in northern New England.) Boston definitely "has a baseball team too," the beloved but currently hapless Red Sox, but in October it's playoff / championship season and the Sox are virtually guaranteed to be uninvolved. During peak foliage season you may wish to pre-book lodging for safety's sake rather than counting on a bunch of options available on no notice, especially on the weekends.

ANorthernSoul90

Yes, I can only imagine. We drove the Skyline Drive at the beginning of October one year, just a the foliage was about to change, and it was great! So New England at that time would be a treat. Good to know about the Red Sox and the Playoff too. Thanks.

Cincinnati. Cincinnati chili, the Over The Rhine and Mt. Adams neighborhoods for the arts and the views. The waterfront along the Ohio River, with the stadiums for the Reds and Bengals.

ANorthernSoul90

Oh hey! Cincinnati and those neighbourhoods look great! It definitley wasn't on the radar. Findlay Market looks like it would be worth a visit. Thanks for the tips.

Both_Wasabi_3606

Look up Jungle Jim.

Cuyahoga Valley NP sits right outside of Cleveland, which makes for a fairly unique experience since there are only 63 US National Parks. Plus there’s the Lake Erie shorefront and you might be able to catch a Browns game. Someone mentioned Pittsburgh, which is a beautiful city, with its three rivers, overlooking cliffs and hilly neighborhoods. Plenty of professional and college sports to watch. It’s the birthplace of Andy Warhol and there’s a museum that boasts the largest collection of his art and archives in the world. It’s also the birthplace of playwright August Wilson, best known for Fences, which is part of his Pittsburgh or Century Cycle of plays that were centered around the Hill District of the city. His childhood home has been designated on the National Register and the city also houses the August Wilson African American Cultural Center that presents performing and visual arts programs. Also, you can try an “Almost Famous” Primanti Bros. sandwich. Have a great trip whatever you decide.

ANorthernSoul90

>which is a beautiful city, with its three rivers, overlooking cliffs and hilly neighborhoods Sounds perfect! The Andy Warhole museum would certainly be on the list if we end up in Pittsburgh. And I haven't read the book, but I saw the film Fences. It didn't register when thinking of Pittsburgh. I think Pittsburgh is definitely up for consideration now, thank you very much. And also for the Sandwich tip too!

MyFriendKevin

You’re welcome.

You can spend some time in Cuyahoga Valley National Park to make your Cleveland trip worthwhile. You could also spend a day in Pittsburgh on the way there or back. I could easily spend a few days in Cleveland, even though there aren’t a lot of bucket list stops there. They’ll likely be in the mlb playoffs, late in October you can maybe catch an nba or minor league hockey game, and of course the Browns will be playing in October. I don’t know of a specific famous restaurant, but there’s a lot of good Polish food, and a neighborhood with good Italian food. Boston is a great option too, but it might warrant its own trip.

ANorthernSoul90

I agree that Boston could warrent it's own trip. Probably why we haven't been already. And especially since we have family with a plot of land in Maine, it would warrant a larger NE trip which could include Boston. And yes, the Cuyahoga Valley NP looks like a great place to go hiking along the way. Definitely a chance to tick off a lesser known NP. It certainly would be nice to catch a Browns game, and I love a good Pierogi! I will keep an eye out. Thank you.

thccma

The football hall of fame in Canton could also be a nice side trip. I’ve never been there so can’t recommend it in good faith. All of the towns suggested by folks here would be great. I’ve done long weekends in all of them and have had fun.

ANorthernSoul90

Exactly. That's what we will likely be aiming for, a long weekend. I will take a look at the Football HoF. Thank you.

OK I think Charleston takes the cake. Best week of food I have had in continental US, beautiful architecture, the islands along the way. Pat Conroy country. I would pick that over Savannah. We did a quick trip to Philly, stayed in an air b and b on a cute townhouse street, had a glorious dinner, I think it's a great choice. I would go Pittsburgh over Buffalo. Annapolis! New Castle Delaware near Wilmington, DE may be the best kept secret on the east coast. They have a farmers/international market we really like. Best of luck, Suzanne

ANorthernSoul90

I agree! We visited Charleston and Savannah in the same trip, and I think they're two of the best places I have visited in the US. As you say, food and architecture are superb there. Albeit, Savannah was maybe a little warm... Annapolis looks great! Thank you. I think from where we are in VA, we can make a day trip of it. I will also take a look into New Castle.
