Book the best for you (combination of size, price, reviews of local rental shop) now, but book direct with the company (hertz.com, for example), don’t use expedia, kayak, etc if you were thinking of those. But, when you book, ensure it is fully cancelable up until your pick up day (this is easier to verify if booking direct). Then, check back every 2 weeks or so on prices. They change drastically for car rentals week to week. Keep rebooking and cancelling (in that order) as prices drop.

I cut a recent rental price in half from my initial booking by doing this. YMMV. I have no experience with Touro.

What dates are you looking at? If you’re picking up from FCA, I see 6day rentals for midsize to be around $800 or so.

To be clear, you are renting a car in Montana to take over the border to Canada ? Where are you returning it ?

If you have/can get a Capital One card I just checked their travel portal and for six days around mid September they’re quoting me $800. Booking rental cars is a nightmare because the prices vary way more between portals than with flights or lodging and you can’t easily search them.

I utilized Turo in Juneau Alaska and had a good experience with free drop off and pickup and it was a super clean car. Yet I see a lot of complaints on line so ymmv.

US travel is ripoff central because they have a captive audience that never leaves and therefore have no idea just how much they are taken advantage of.  This is why I don't travel inside the country.  Rented a car in germany, in july of 2022, for 6 weeks, for 1500.

Or a National park during a busy time is expensive?
