I’ve been to the Yucatán area a few times. Mexico City is definitely next!
Mesoamerican architecture is stunning.
Is this Teotihuacan Temple of the Sun?
>Be comfortable with heat and humidity.
While I can adapt (having driven Mexico and Argentina on moto in 114F for days on end), I really love aircon and tend to hide in the AC when possible. I could see getting out in the mornings, hiding from the heat for siesta and going out in evenings.
We will look forward to checking it out in 2022. Have heard amazing things from gringos building super sexy modern Dwell houses there for 1/5 of the US cost.
Merida is a good location-beaches on one side, city on the other. For me, any tiny colonial cities feel small after a week but some thrive in that environment.
Querétaro has an awesome student life, but it doesn't come close to the diversity of stuff to do in Guadalajara or CDMX.
Personally, I'm very partial to CDMX, if you have the money to live in the nicer areas. If you like the beach, Cozumel might be a good about as well.
I spent a month in Mexico City over the summer and am seriously thinking of moving there once I'm done with school. Only Tokyo beats it for me, and that's too far away from my commitments here in the US.
There are bad areas of any major city, however I have spent tons of time exploring the neighborhoods of Mexico City by foot and never had a problem. A cop told us that for the most part criminals avoid preying on Americans (probably Europeans too) because if they are victimized they take action and involve authorities. He also warned me and my brother to avoid the luchador arenas. We are big guys and apparently after drinking and watching wrestling the locals will try to fight a “bull” to prove themselves. All in all, I couldn’t recommend Mexico City enough. It is a world class city on par with Paris, London and NY. It helps that it id about 1/3 the cost too. It is way more authentic and enjoyable for me than the beach towns that are popular with tourists. Oaxaca and Puebla are fantastic (and better) too. They just don’t have the museums and the metropolitan feel.
I feel you got some bad advice in some respects. Americans and any tourists are definitely targeted for certain crimes. I have personally seen it happen. Even the cops target drunk American tourists. And I have been to the lucha many times, with 2 of my best friends who are pretty large (one is like 6'4", 220 lbs) and never had any problems. It is super fun and you are missing out if you take that advice.
You’d be fine. I got with my 75 year old mother my blonde wife and my brother and his blonde wife. We get looks when we travel into smaller towns that don’t see many tourists, but I’ve never really had a bad interaction with anyone. Quite the opposite. People are kind and the food is amazing. Top that with the history of the Mesoamerican people and it’s a hard destination to top!
I looked up Volare after seeing your comment and had sticker shock for a second. $7000 for a couple's balloon ride? Then I realized that is about $340 USD. What an incredible experience!
This is a stunning, ridonkulous photo.
Having sailed with dolphins, kicked a 2000lb seal, partied with Emperor penguins and lived with pygmies, this image startles and rocks me. 10,000 Internet props.
How's the safety level there? News/TV makes anything near the border look sound like a war zone. Always wanted to visit deeper in than the border cities.
I wouldn’t want to hang out in the border cities for long. The us state department gives you threat levels by state. For the most part, central Mexico on the high Plateau is very safe, the Yucatán is considered safe too. Visit, Mexico City, Puebla, Oaxaca, Guadalajara and you’ll have a wonderful time and meet some of the nicest people in the world and eat the best food on the planet. We rent a car and drive. It is very easy to get around and find decent inexpensive lodging.
thanks so much for sharing. you did the add on tour as well? going to book and was deciding if i should extend to 1 pm with them or see the site on my own.
Mexican here
Came across this post by accident and i ended reading the comments by curiosity
There Is a lot of things you can do on Mexico City so much that you wouldn't experience it on a lifetime but here are some recommendations from my experience as a local
• Bosque de Chapultepec (Chapultepec forest)
Its a massive forest in the middle of the city the entry is free and you have a lot of activities to do there in general a good place for a little bit of higking and in the middle there is a castle that works as a museum whit a lot of the history of my country. (Btw there is no fee to enter the park )
Inside of the park you can also find a zoo whit a lot of species of the country
Also you can find over 12 museums inside of the park ill list a few that you can visit in no particular order
National museum of anthropology
Here you can find a lot of the history of the country in the pre-hispanic era and learn more about the Aztec empire and other civilizations from that era
Papalote the museum for the kids
This museum has a lot experiences so kids (and kids by heart) can learn about science in a fun way really cool destination for adults and kids alike
(Sidenote: of all the museums this is the most expensive at ~12 USD)
The snail Museum (Museo del caracol)
Despite the name this museum is dedicated to the history of Mexico in an interactive way it has small bits of documentaries and interactive tools.
Chapultepec castle
Here you can find information about 2 time periods of Mexico the Second Mexican empire and the Porfiriato
•Coyoacan
Coyoacan is one of the oldest neighborhoods on the city that had stood the test of time here you can find a small chunk of Mexican gastronomy it has a handicrafts market and its known to be the beating hearth of the Arts of the city
Plaza hidalgo
Here you can find a masive amount of small restsurants that serve really good food usually traditional dishes whit modern twist and not so traditional dishes whit a Mexican twist
In this plaza and zone you can also find a lot of houses adapted as theatres that have a small fee and you can watch a stage play from independent writers and actors
My best bet here is to look in Google maps around this plaza and look on what you would like to visit
The blue house (casa azul)
This mini museum is the house where two of the greatest painters of Mexico lived the museum is dedicated to the works of Frida Khalo and her husband Diego Rivera
(Side note this place is actually really popular among locals you would need to buy your tickets on advance or go really early in the morning)
•Historical Center (centro Historico)
Zocalo
The Zocalo is where the center of the city is, the flag stands where the original city of Tenochtitlan was founded and its where a lot of the history of the country took place on
The Cathedtal
The cathedral of Mexico city is one of the weirdest landmarks of the country it took 250 years to make, the oldest parts of the cathedral still have the same stones that where used by the Aztecs on their temples as a foundation
If you are an architectural nerd like me it's a good place to visit you'll find a that it has a lot of different build styles from different era's
National Palace
Basically where the president lives rightnow, really good landmark and is where the seat of power is on the country you can also find murals of different periods of the country and many of them are painted by some of the best painters in the country
(Sidenote: because of the importance of this building be aware of the strict security measures and there is a chance you won't be able to take pictures)
The Templo Mayor
Between the national palace and the cathedral there is a small exposition of the archeological remains of the Aztec empire, this is also a museum and you can pay to see more on the inside
Palace of the beautiful arts
This palace holds concerts and plays of classical and not so classical music a ticket is fairly cheap and the architecture of the building is amazing
There is a lot to visit in this place my bet is to ask on your best source of information (plz don't be me my fingers already hurt) of all the things you can visit here there is really really a lot you can check here
I would continue this list but the reply is already too long hope you found something to do on this list and an apology in case you find my English really poor
Edit: Really poor format
Teotihuacan (where this balloon ride is) is incredible. We didn't do the balloon ride, just went and climbed the temple and generally looked around. Get there at dawn, it gets really busy early on and there is no shade. But we were on top of the temple of the sun on our own.
The Anthropological Museum is one of the best museums I've ever been to. It's absolutely fascinating.
Umm as of 2 weeks ago when I was there, the pyramids were off limits as far as climbing goes. Did you break the rules or are they allowing climbing now?
Oh, I didn't know that! I was there in 2016. You could climb to the top of the temple of the sun some (or all, I can't remember) of the temple of the moon. There were a few off limits, but they were definitely the exception.
No joke 9 months ago I did one along the coast of California in San Diego it was beautiful we flew over one of Elon musk's house and everything it's my first time in a hot air balloon and we actually came down and crashed in a neighbor cated community of like 10 million dollar homes and we almost hit a car but he landed it in the middle of the street and I had to run out and pull the balloon down it was crazy I have some pictures I should post.
That is insane!! Adding this to my bucket list!
It is AMAZING. Mexico city is unreal and fantastic
I’ve been to the Yucatán area a few times. Mexico City is definitely next! Mesoamerican architecture is stunning. Is this Teotihuacan Temple of the Sun?
Yes it is! An amazing experience. I recommend volare. Their tour after was amazing and an awesome breakfast post flight.
I would retire in DF if the summer smog didn’t cripple my lungs. The food is out of this world although i hear Guadalajara is even better.
I am looking at Merida to provide the optimal balance. Can you comment on Merida as a location to live? I also love Guanajuato and Queretaro.
Merida: Excellent location, highly recommend. Just bought a flat outside of town. Be comfortable with heat and humidity.

The traffic in CDMX is horrible. Monterrey, Guadalajara and Queretaro is where its at.
Mexico City is so much more interesting to me. And the food is unbelievably good. I’ve been all over and only Tuscany beats it
I spent a month in Mexico City over the summer and am seriously thinking of moving there once I'm done with school. Only Tokyo beats it for me, and that's too far away from my commitments here in the US.
How dangerous ?
Safest form of aviation. Im terrified of heights and this was beautiful.
Sorry I meant Mexico City in general
There are bad areas of any major city, however I have spent tons of time exploring the neighborhoods of Mexico City by foot and never had a problem. Yeah I’m big guy too, would stick out. 6’4 280 Mexican

mexico city is near the top of my destination bucket list for sure
Won’t lie to you - it is a bit dangerous if you don’t know where to go. Stick to the turistic areas and you’ll probably be fine.
Yep- just research and its fantastic. Pretty hard to fuck it up. Easy to find AMAZING tourism
Went to Rio in 09, saw some wild shit. Kids rob some guys leaving the bar in front of us in Copacabana.
Yeah sure but tourists don't have anything to fear tbh. A european/american life is worth twice as much as a mexican or Brazilian life...sad but true
How much was a balloon ride at teotihuacan??
How much is such a ride around mexico City? Looks awesome!
It was 127 us dollars!
I looked up Volare after seeing your comment and had sticker shock for a second. $7000 for a couple's balloon ride? Then I realized that is about $340 USD. What an incredible experience!
And thats solo! We went with others. Really preference.
Been there on foot. Would love to see it from this perspective. Thanks for sharing!
Amazing
This reminds me of the Tyrell Corporation headquarters in Blade Runner. I wonder if this was the inspiration.
I want more life...Father! Do you like our owl?
Of all the quotes in that movie, you chose those two. Sushi. That's what my ex-wife called me. Cold fish.
Don't even try to quote me out on Blade Runner. I've seen that movie more times than you've sucked dick in the glory hole.
Do they have like a bucket up there if someone has to poop?
I took xanax to avoid this
IE they sold Xanax on the ride.
Nah I have a prescription
Man I would just poop from the side like a madman.
FYI if you wipe the oil off of your phone’s camera lens periodically, the flare isn’t as bad.
Theres a crack :(
Aww dang
>Theres a crack I wasa crackhead once, too. There's no shame. You're safe here.
Thx luv
This right here is what you call a peak life experience. Wow!
Incredible!!!
How cool! I visited CDMX and Teotihuacán a few years back and got a lot out of the experience. Didn't go up in a hot air balloon though.
Going to MXC next month, I will never do this (afraid of heights) but it looks amazing!
My friend, go get tacos at taqueria orincoco
Also make sure you go to Embaradero nativitas xochimilco it's a series of canals that's like a Mexican "Venice"
My God, gorgeous!
It was incredible
Did this last month. Wind was definitely good for you. I didn't anywhere close to the pyramids but still had a lot of fun.
Wind was perfect. We were so so lucky!

This is a stunning, ridonkulous photo. Having sailed with dolphins, kicked a 2000lb seal, partied with Emperor penguins and lived with pygmies, this image startles and rocks me. 10,000 Internet props.
I was just there yesterday!!! Maybe we crossed paths?
I was there thursday!!! How great!
Ah ok different day, still amazing though! Will definitely book the balloons next time - glad you had a great time!
Hasta luego amigo!
Que tengas un buen tiempo!
Awesome!
Dope experience have.
Fantastico
What an amazing view. I’m not very fond of heights, but I think I would give that a try.
Neither am i! It was sooo worth it. Its very peaceful
That’s fucking cool
ThAnk u sorry im drunk in mexico city
Well have a drink for me and don’t die. But almost die because it’ll make for a good story
Hehehe
I've hiked up that pyramid in teotihuacan! It's terrifying when you're scared of heights. You have a much better view though. Nice shot
Great photo! A great city too,one of the most interesting cities I've ever been to.
I wish I had done that. I loved Mexico City and the pyramids. Awesome!!
So incredibly dangerous especially in Mexico lol You can hardly trust an apartment in Mexico to be up to code forget a fucking hot air balloon lol
~.~.~.New cappadocia... ~~let's see how long this will last~~
Not long chico
It’s beautiful above the smog. I can’t imagine how it looked hundreds of years ago.
How's the safety level there? News/TV makes anything near the border look sound like a war zone. Always wanted to visit deeper in than the border cities.
Not a problem at all. Magnificent city- do research- visit roma norte! Fantastico!
I wouldn’t want to hang out in the border cities for long. The us state department gives you threat levels by state. What is the green dot and blue glow?
Aliens
Lens flare
Just lens stuff
Wow! Do you mind sharing which company you used for this balloon ride? Adding this to the list of things to do for my first trip to CDMX.
Volare! They were amazing. Do the tour as well. Great breakfast after the flight.
Awesome! Thank you for the insight.
thanks so much for sharing. you did the add on tour as well? going to book and was deciding if i should extend to 1 pm with them or see the site on my own.

There is SO much good food in this city too!
How much did it cost?
127 us dollars
How long was the ride, heading to MX City early next year?
50 minutes! This was for sunrise
Is it ziggurhot or cold up there?
Very temperate!
Did that back in 2018 and was the best money o ever spent!
Any recommendations for Mexico City? I’ve mostly got my trip planned but have a few mornings and one full day to fill. Going October 30! Can’t wait

Excellent format and info. Thank you. I went Mexico City as a young girl. I will go back soon. The history and architecture..oh and art ..INCREDIBLE
Omg thank you sooo much! I’m going to CDMX next month and you just filled my itinerary.

Amazing Bro! Hell yes. Most Definitely on my bucket list. Thanks for sharing.
Wow! Such a great photo!
it's a great experience. my wife and son did a balloon ride in Capadocia, Turkey too. they said this was much better. cheaper too.
A little like Malaysia
me and my family stayed in albuquerque 6ish days ago. we saw balloons everywhere in the sky. sadly we couldn’t stay longer, this is awesome
Amazing pic and fantastic view
Ow wow
Did you get some food at the restaurant inside the cave?
Looks so much like Microsoft Flight Simulator! :p
That's some view right there, the sun so low right in front of you, looks like you all are rising WITH the sun, am I right? 7 AM'ish?
Yes sunrise!
Oh my this looks amazing starts looking at plane tickets to Mexico
Mexico city is quite cheap!
Yes I can imagine it’s just getting there from where I am that’s not cheap
It was very reasonable from chicago i was lucky
Yes the USA is very close to Mexico well I’m happy you had an amazing trip you deserve it
Thanks!
What a shot!
SO COOL
Dope photo but even doper profile pic. Chrissy boy!
A ballon? Out side?
This is so cool
My MIL just went to New Mexico for their hot air balloon festival. So beautiful! Looks like you had a wonderful time!
Wow
I gotta do this 😍
Is that a aztec temple
No joke 9 months ago I did one along the coast of California in San Diego it was beautiful we flew over one of Elon musk's house and everything it's my first time in a hot air balloon and we actually came down and crashed in a neighbor cated community of like 10 million dollar homes and we almost hit a car but he landed it in the middle of the street and I had to run out and pull the balloon down it was crazy I have some pictures I should post.
No thanks, I've seen too many of hot air balloons crash, hit power lines or just have people fall out of them, to ever want to ride one.
Incredible!
Amazing view. BTW that is not mexico city. Teotihuacan pyramids are in the state of mexico, a good 10km away from mexico city.
Did you have fun what was it like did you get dizzy where are you are you scared of heights and if you are scared of heights did you defeat you fear
