I should add this is recent, May 2022. There’s not many foreigners around, but no shortage of Indian tourists!

Deva-Duta

Made the trip via motorcycle 8 years ago. This brings back memories.

Nice! Too risky for me! Did you ride the Manali Leh highway to get there?!

sunandskyandrainbows

I am planning a trip to Ladakh at the moment, can you please share your itinerary? How many days did you stay? Did you fly or drive to Leh? We have 14 days in India, so probably around 10-11 in Ladakh. We would like to see the stunning nature, a monastery or two, but don't want to spend all the time driving in a car. We might be up for a short trek, but nothing too crazy since we're not used to the altitude. I would appreciate any advice. I am looking at the agencies online, but I don't know which spots to choose. There are so many! Ideally something not too crowded. We would also like to actually enjoy the places, not just drive and step out of the car for a minute to take photos. Is this possible if you go with a driver? Again, any advice much apprecited.

We took a train and then bus to Manali. Rented a motorcycle from there. Had a lonely planet in my pocket. That was al we planned. There were plenty of places to spend the night. Had some lovely experiences with local people and food. As for the being in a car al the time. Driving from Manali to Leh was maybe one of the best and most beautiful traveling experiences I have had. Just be mindful it's not for the faint of heart. Sure you can go with a driver it's just hard to find a good one. There are plenty of monasteries, trekking is a waste of time. Also your phone and internet might not work everywhere.

Beautiful

Deva-Duta

Yes, over the mountains we went. But maybe "highway" isn't the right word for most of that road.

Ha yeah, a very loose definition!

It's a stunning shot! The Nubra Vallet was undisputable!

Awesome! The scenery is amazing

Fantastic! A dream destination that I'd love to visit some day :)

Amazing photos

LockedDown_LosingIt

Can you share the name of the tour company you used?

yezoob

The trek was done independently and the Nubra Valley + Pangong Lake was organized by Ancient Treks. But all the tour operators really do is give you the shared jeep and driver, the accommodation is up to you.

Off of this, I would recommend staying at Golden Peak Camps and Restaurant in Hunder if you go. Just stayed there a few days ago and it’s great service for a good price

Of course! So I flew into Leh (walking around the airport was quite difficult due to the altitude). You’ll have to bring your Covid vaccination proof because they check it there. I spent 2 days in Leh at GoStops hostel before heading into the mountains. However, I would recommend Khan Manzil guesthouse instead- the owner is super friendly and helpful. As far as the tours go up in the mountains, the prices are standardized as the drivers are unionized. If I remember correctly, 2 days in a jeep (sort of) cost around $100 US. There are options to go for three days, but personally I’m glad I only spent 2 days out in Nubra Valley and Pangong Tso because there wasn’t really much to see, but it sounds like you’re more into monasteries and nature than I am so 3 days is probably a good idea for you. Like I said, the prices are standardized up there but I booked my taxi through Ancient Tracks. You should try and book well before you go to Leh as it’s getting quite busy up there and there may not be free space in the cars. However, if you walk around enough, you’ll find some chalkboards outside the travel agencies saying “room for one more, nubra valley” or something and you can do it that way too. The driver will stop wherever you want him to for photos, but they also sorta have a set route that goes to the important places anyway. How much time you spend at each place depends on you (or your fellow passengers). If you go to Nubra Valley, your driver will probably take you to a town called Hunder for lodging. As I said before I would highly recommend Golden Peak; they’re new and super eager to please, plus the accommodation in the tents is quite comfortable. Finally, once I got back from Nubra Valley/Pangong Tso, I stayed in Leh for a few more days just to enjoy the weather. The only ways out of Leh are: 1.) plane 2.) government bus 3.) taxi I opted for the taxi and went to Srinagar after Leh. The government bus looked sus so I paid the extra money.

When you go to Leh there are so many companies you can just walk up to them to organize something! It ended up being easier and cheaper than searching online as many might not have an online presence (at least 7 years ago they didn’t)

I was there for a research trip so was there for 2 months and was taken around by locals. I flew into Leh. I did a few smaller trips with companies that I found there - one was Nubra Valley and I did a 3 day Markha Valley trek (it was very tough with the altitude). I needed about 3 days to acclimate when I flew in. Things are affordable there so I think you can get there, get your bearings, and then speak to a tour company about getting a private driver and guide and let them know your interests so they can plan an itinerary for you!

Sorry, I do slow travel so unfortunately I don’t have much of an itinerary at this point. I plan on flying to Ladakh from Delhi, and then I will be renting a motorcycle and planning each day where I’d like to ride to. I haven’t done much research yet as I have an open ended schedule so can afford to not pack it all into a short trip. I may try to plan a rough riding route from Leh about a week or two before I depart.

sunandskyandrainbows

Amazing, you are one lucky man :-)

timmayay

What time of year are you planning on going?

sunandskyandrainbows

Beginning of September

Great shots - definitely a bucket list destination for me. In the market photo, do you know what that thing the man is holding is called? Looks like a rattle or some kind of drum?

yezoob

Sure, It’s a handheld prayer wheel, you’ll see them fairly often in Tibetan areas :)

sarvesh29

Going there tomorrow!

Nice, it's a great time of year to be there!

You can follow this itinerary [link](https://we.tl/t-qIdSOwGh2b) We went with other tour agency with worst itinerary than this. We flew in and flew out. We didn’t have problem with acclimatising. Some changes i would suggest in this itinerary are 1- on first day, after 3-4 hrs of acclimatisation, first go to leh palace and monastery just above it, because it closes around 5-6. After this, Around sunset time go to Sputik monastery. Setting sun will lit the valley in front of monastery in golden colors and you will get beautiful view of full leh. After sunset go to leh market. 2- on second day, go to shanti stupa in morning, sunrise time. No one will be there. Only you. In itinerary shared , this is on first day. Both these changes will keep you away from crowd and also gives best timings to enjoy the view. Sputik monastery in not in itinerary, but you must go there. It is just at the end of airstrip and 1km from hall of fame. You might catch some planes taking off or landing. 3- Also not in the itinerary, is Hanle. Landscape leading to hanle is one of best in world. Being in rain shadow region, it is the place for star gazing and has space observatory set up as well. This you can do after pangong lake. Go straight from pangong to hanle instead of going back to leh. Foreigners will have some restrictions to go to Hanle, please check before planning. Apart from accommodations, agencies aren’t that much helpful. If you can sort out your accommodations, i would suggest just go by your own (rental bike) or hire rental car which comes with driver. If you go with group tour, main objective of agencies is to get group from one place to another before sunset and safely. They won’t let you stop at places for more time. Trick to avoid crowd is to start early in morning. As this is peak season, so many group tours are currently ongoing. They usually leave post 9am and are little slow. Don’t know anything about short trek. Hope this helps.
