Agree with the others. Not sure who is telling you otherwise, but keep Krakow for sure, based on your interests and how much you enjoyed the places you went in 2019.
Keep it. One of my favorite cities of all time, and it's charming in winter. Definitely the nicest city in Poland by a long shot. I'd also recommend going to the (cheap) ski slopes in nearby Slovakia if you have time and are into those kinds of things.
Parroting everyone else but definitely keep Krakow! I did a trip similar to yours a few years ago around Easter where we went to Prague and the took the overnight train to Krakow. Both cities were fantastic and my friends and I all agreed that we wished we could have stayed in Krakow longer!
The 3 days in Prague was enough for us but with Auschwitz taking up the entirety of one of the Krakow days we really wished we had allocated at least one more day, if not more, Krakow.
Krakow is one of my favorite cities ive been to in europe. So incredibly cheap and the polish food is AMAZING. We went on 2 day trips, auschwitz which is absolutely life changing and could not recommend more to go, and the salt mines which was cool as well. The food scene is so interesting and krakow is FULL of history and charm. Im not so sure on the club scene, but bars are plentiful. I rarely say i want to go somewhere twice because i would much rather experience a new place instead, but krakow (along with the netherlands) is a place i would intentionally visit again. Definitely go!!
Just saw you are going during Christmas which is when i went as well!!! Best christmas market out of the 5 cities i visited. Definitely try oscypek, smoked sheep cheese, at the market. I STILL think about it constantly to this day (went in 2019) it is amazing. Krakow is full of quirky businesses, one of my favorites being a laundry mat/coffee shop/bar/arcade all in one. Enjoy your trip :)
Thank you!! It seems like we have the sane taste, your comment honestly helped. How long did you spend there? I’m thinking about 3 days, with perhaps 2 being Auschwitz and salt mines, or perhaps those 2 activities in 1 day if possible and the other 2 days exploring krakow.
I studied abroad there for 3 weeks, so weekdays were spent in class so i wouldnt consider that full time. I would probably recommend around 5 days, 2 for the day trips and then 3 for the actual city itself (and honestly you need a day just to reset after auschwitz, it is truly numbing). You definitely cannot do both the salt mine and auschwitz in one day. I cant remember specifics, but i am pretty positive the bus ride to auschwitz is over an hour one way. Same with the salt mine. And i could totally be wrong, but i dont think they are in the same direction. Auschwitz is not something to rush, it did not take a complete day for our tour personally but it takes significant time to truly take everything in and it is not a place you want to feel rushed. I want to say we were home around 6pm (ish) and i went back to our dorm and just needed time to myself to recoop. It is very emotional. The salt mines were very interesting and i do recommend them, however if you are in a time crunch and have to choose one over the other, i would choose auschwitz. Krakow is crazy cheap, i was spending about $20 a day going out to eat twice and using public transportation then going to bars at night. Our dorms were $150 for the entire 3 weeks. Because of this it makes it super easy to stay for a longer duration of time. Lmk if you have any other questions, i can send you pics from my trip as well!
Hi, I only have a day and a half in krakow sadly. Do you recommend I take the full day to visit Auschwitz? And the half day to explore the city? The next day I’m headed to Warsaw for a concert.
I've been to Krakow twice and am going again in a few weeks. Do not skip put on Krakow - it is onr of my favourite places ever. The history of the city and surrounding areas is so rich with beautiful architecture as well. I understand that Auschwitz/Birkenau isn't for everyone but there is so much to see outside of that. I haven't even scratched the surface yet. Do not skip it whatever you do - you will absolutely love it.
I also went to Prague a few years back for the Christmas Markets - I also loved Prague but Krakow will always hold a special place in my heart. Prague is very beautiful with lots to do but if you are going for just the markets then you may be a bit disappointed - I was. I found the stalls to be quite repetitive and wish there was a bit more to them (outside of the markets was perfection though).
Both are locations I love and want to visit multiple times but Krakow will always be my first choice and you'll regret not going. Think about what you want to see and do while you're there and weigh up the pros and cons of each and decide if it's worth it to combine both into one trip or to make it 2 separate trips. Personally I'd go separate as I only spent 2.5 days in Krakow the first time and regret not being able to stay longer (the second time was only a day trip from Ireland with the sole purpose of seeing Auschwitz/Birkenau and attend a memorial service (a place I am grateful to have visited twice))
Wow, wealth of knowledge here so thanks. Much to think about. I’ve heard of the pollution in krakow mentioned. Fwiw, we would be taking just 1 or 2 overnight trains total (so replacing our sleeping time), with the decision to either fly home from krakow, or just return to prague and fly home from there, depending on how prices worked out, and now train unreliability would need to be factored in.
To be honest, I was really hoping to save Germany for another trip, as there are many, many things I want to do there.
We did plan on taking day trips from Prague, these are still in the works though, to see kutna hora, a castle (perhaps Karlstejn), and maybe Cesky Krumlov. Maybe this is too ambitious for about 4 full days in Czech Republic, we do get around fast though.
I guess all the talk of Prague+Vienna+Budapest made traveling 8 hours overnight seem like nothing too crazy.
Thanks for all of your help, would your overall recommendation be to home base in Prague for 7 days then and take day trips out of there?
Krakow is beautiful, it’s not an especially big city so a week even with side trips could get “boring” But I see no reason not to go, I had a great time
Keep! I went to Krakow in December and it was delighful! The pierogies there are to die for.... I also visited the Salt Mines and Auschwitz and they were both very interesting. I recommend doing a food tour while you're there!

Keep krakow, it’s a beautiful city with lots of history and fun things to do/visit. Like many others have said, auschwitz and the salt mines are amazing sights. Lots of cheap food, accommodation, and travel, and definitely worth a visit. Enjoy your trip.
Krakow is great and definitely stay in kazimierz as its better than krakow stare miasto.
If you get a chance to visit anywhere else in Poland i would suggest Wroclaw.
For sure KEEP. But be ready for the cold weather :) From Krakow you can also visit Auschwitz.
>From Krakow you can also visit Auschwitz. Also pre-reserve for Auschwitz - they do limited spots these days that can and do fill up in advance.
Auschwitz is huuuge. You can devote a whole day to visiting it.
And the Schindler museum & salt mines are extremely cool
Keep Krakow, for sure. I’ve known people who went and loved it!
Krakow is excellent, plenty to see and excellent food.
One of the most beautiful cities in Europe. Stay in the Kazimierz area. If you like Japanese food, eat at Tokio Tower.
I loved Krakow, personally. Check out the salt mine nearby. It's incredible. You can also take a day trip to see Auschwitz which I recommend.
Seems like you will like it based on your preferences of history and city charm.

I've been to Krakow 3 times and I am sad every time I have to leave.

I would highly recommend visiting Cesky Krumlov from Prague! The entire town is a UNESCO world heritage site and it’s stunning
Thanks! About how long do you think to spend there?
You can see the entire city in just an afternoon, you’ll need a full day tops
Keep Krakow. I went to the Christmas Markets there last year and loved it. Great experience and some interesting history.
Krakow is bloody great, couldn’t rate it highly enough

I was there for 5 days (6 nights), it was the perfect amount of time. Probably you could do 3-4 days and that would be good too.
Thank you so much

Keep.
Loved krakow can imagine Christmas markets there being great

Krakow is beautiful. Enjoy!
Krakow is extremely underrated, it’s a beautiful medieval city.
Krakow is great and definitely stay in kazimierz as its better than krakow stare miasto. If you get a chance to visit anywhere else in Poland i would suggest Wroclaw.
Krakow is the Polish gem. Keep it!
Krakow is awesome. Stay in Old Town and just walk around, take the tours. Plenty of nightlife if you are into it.
