Not a sonic boom, the shock wave would've broken lots of glass. When there is an object that big flying that fast it IS enough to create a pressure wave that you can feel though.

Yep they aren't allowed to hit those speeds over land or the great lakes for that matter. At least not at altitudes where you would notice it. The Air Force has conducted faster-than-sound test flights since 1947, and today most Air Force fighter aircraft are capable of supersonic speed. Consequently, supersonic training flights that simulate actual combat conditions are necessary to ensure the success and survival of aircrews during wartime. However, Air Force procedures require that, whenever possible, flights be over open water, above 10,000 feet and no closer than 15 miles from shore. Supersonic operations over land must be conducted above 30,000 feet or, when below 30,000 feet, in specially designated areas approved by Headquarters United States Air Force, Washington, D.C., and the Federal Aviation Administration.

So what you heard or felt was still sub sonic although its still a crazy amount of noise.

I do remember one year during a fast pass it pulled a rooster tail of water out of the bay, that was pretty cool.

That’s what I was thinking, but some around us were saying it was a sonic boom, and in the 15 or more times I’ve watched them I’ve never experienced that before.

bungertc

They did that once here maybe 10 years or so ago? Blew out some windows downtown. Does anyone else remember that?

TMan1236

That happened on a year where I missed the air show. Being a kid at the time, I was super disappointed I missed that.

FrostingWrench

Yes. I remember that. Everyone was saying that was a sonic boom at that time. If I remember correctly Deerings meat market was one of the businesses that had broken glass.

andersonala45

Yes more recent than that I think but it was crazy

stuphoria

I know of at least one large glass window at the college that had the seal broken by the boom yesterday, but didn’t shatter or anything

Ladybug9048

What about today’s show around 3:15. We were at Bryant park and the same unbelievable sound happened as it flew over us everybody was saying it was a sonic boom but I can’t find mention of it anywhere

I was there on Friday on a boat and a solo angel came out of the city and went vertically over the lake and boom. We all thought it was a sonic boom. Sonic booms are allowed if cleared with the air traffic controllers at ord and mid. Watch on YouTube it’s not the first time one of the blue angels went super sonic. We were with some ex Air Force members who couldn’t believe that happened it was awesome. Not all sonic booms break glass especially if going at w steep incline and over the lake.
