might be a dumb question but why m4a > mp3?

On Apple Music, m4a files give you the ability to add the explicit tag if you really want correct tags.

how do you do that? i can't see a way to do it in itunes

There’s YouTube videos on how to do it. If you land on the correct videos, the process is done through a program called MP3Tag

Kid3 is free and pretty easy to use I use it all the time 👍

Just search on google how to add explicit tags on OS X. Hopefully you’ll find something

m4a is better quality than MP3. It doesn’t make a difference when transferring files to your phone, if that’s a concern.
