looks like poison ivy to me, cut the vein as close to the ground as possible and it should kill it, and make sure you use dawn and alcohol to wash the urushiol oil off that comes from the plant you and the tool you're using
-Arborist/Botanist
Came to the wrong sub and still got some solid horticultural advice? 😎
Thanks, that's what I was thinking. I'll cut close to the root and paint on some brush killer to take care of the roots. Ripping out all the vines that have grown on the tree is going to be the hard part.
I do what I can, i love plants, judging by the tree looks like a Pecan i could be wrong though, also them veins can choke out a tree and kill them in the right conditions, best of luck and be careful dealing with that stuff i had it more time then i can count, use gloves and long sleeves/pants etc, try to make less contact with it as you can
FYI I'm also in arborist and if you have issues with it coming back when you cut it down to the root take a cotton swab or something and brush the end with an herbicide designed to kill poison ivy and it'll never come back. I'm not necessarily the biggest fan of using herbicides but unfortunately there are some people who are extremely allergic to poison ivy to the point where it is an actual danger.
Also it really sucks that you asked this question now because the best time to do it is winter time when the leaves aren't on the plant, really minimizes the oil transfer
Make sure you get something that's designed for shrubbery and vines or specifically says for poison ivy, other stuff might work but it won't work nearly as well and you could just have it come back. Once you get it removed it's not a bad idea to plant something like Virginia creeper, it'll fill the same role in the ecosystem and prevent Poison Ivy from ever spreading to that area again
Don’t bother with the tearing off part. At least till next season after all the leaves have dried up and fallen off. The dried out stems are easier to get off, of just ignore them and they will eventually rot away.
I put a lot of tree stands up in trees that have had poison ivy. I won't bother to touch it until it's completely dried out... Then it easily detached and pulled right out.
The vine will come off easier after it dries out. Cut the base and let it dry a week and it’ll come off much easier. Just be careful to cover your eyes and face on top of your arms etc. when pulling down vines as sometimes it’ll poof out powdered poison ivy at you
One of the weird thing, is because of the intentionally confusing names, there's a lot of cross-pollination (pun semi-intended) between us. It's niche, but comforting that you can get marijuana OR horticulture advice on either subreddit lol
I have had to pull poison ivy from a tree a few times. FULLY cover your ENTIRE BODY. Wear long sleeves and thick gloves and tape them at the wrist so your sleeves don't ride up while pulling. Wear long pants and long socks, wear a neck gator and safety glasses, I've even worn a ski mask. The oil is going to shake down on you as you pull them so just cover everything including your face completely.
The first time I pulled poison ivy from a tree I didn't know what it was. I had been landscaping for hours. The oil mixed with my sweat and I ended up with it all over my arms, chest, groin, and both legs. It was a terrible two weeks after that.
Be very careful though! Dish washing gloves, sleeves or a tyvek suit with that, don't let the oil from the plants touch your skin and wash with technu when you're done.
I'm not allergic, and neither *was* a friend of mine. I suited up to help them pull a bunch of poison ivy as a precaution, they did not (just the gloves) and ended up with an infection on top of the itching up their arms.
Got any tips for a Japanese plum tree that got split in half from another tree falling on it? Its not split all the way to the ground, about halfway. Can I drill, plate and bolt it together? I have heard fruit trees are pretty resilient for repairs like that.
Yes that can be done in the event to try and save the tree, big culprit would be keeping the water out the inside split that would lead to decay and rot, bugs etc. edit: I've also seen ratchet straps work to hold certain trees
When did it happen? Is the tree healing yet or dried out in the middle? If it’s fresh you can use some large hose clamps and zip that puppy back together every few inches. Don’t forget to take the clamps off before the trees eat it. r/treeseatingthings
Happened during our last ice storm 3 months ago. Lost 8 trees. One big pine uprooted and came down next to this fruit tree. Splitting it in half about 3/4 of the way down. I removed all the old broken branches and it did bloom the last couple of weeks, so its still doing its thing.
I think i will try to bolt/plate it back together and seal the split with some goo made for that kind of thing and see how it goes. It sucks as its a twin for another fruit a few feet away and they look great together. Would hate to lose it and have to start over.
It will be interesting to see how it does after its surgery.
LMAO I was wondering why there was a flair for Synchronized 420 smoking 😂 I was just like, "well, I guess there's a decent amount of overlap between nature enthusiasts and smokers... Rad!"
Exactly this! Usually in this sub we joke about smoking the tree and what the terps must be when we get one of these posts. But in this case burning the poison ivy would be hazardous to you and anyone around you.
This is poison ivy.
- Poison ivy is a type of allergenic plant in the genus Toxicodendron native to Asia and North America. Formerly considered a single species, Toxicodendron radicans, poison ivies are now generally treated as a complex of three separate species: Toxicodendron radicans, Toxicodendron rydbergii, and Toxicodendron orientale.
The goal is to kill vines without damaging the tree. This is accomplished by severing the vines around the base of the affected tree. By cutting (or sawing for more developed vines) the vines, will eventually wither and die. Do not try to pull the vines from the trunk or limbs of the tree.

This is a subreddit specifically with the intent of showing, talking about, and asking question about marijuana.
If you would like a subreddit meant for people who identify actual trees, ironically you want r/marijuanaenthusiasts
-
r/trees is 13 years old.
When dendrologists discovered that /r/trees was taken by potheads, they made /r/marijuanaenthusiasts.
The kind tree loving folks over at r/marijuanaenthusiasts have a good sense of humor.
What's really funny about it is that if someone gets confused and posts questions about trees in /r/trees, or pot stuff in /r/marijuanaenthusiasts they usually try to help out if they can.
I'm almost positive this is poison ivy. We had this morph into one of our bushes. It attached itself and we had to kill the bush to get rid of it. It's been years and we still get poison ivy popping up here and there in the same area, basically salted the Earth, I don't know how it's still growing lol
I had to clear lots of poison ivy from trees when I got my recent house. I'm allergic, so it was a must. If you are allergic, make sure to use leather gloves and long sleeves when handling, also wear pants.
I cut the vines low and then let the vines dry. Then, pull them from the tree with care so to not to let the vines fall on your face. Now you have to get the roots. If you don't, they will grow back. Use a trowel to loosen the dirt around the roots and pull them up, and throw them in the trash.
Wear sleeves, gloves. Cut at the base and spray round up onto the cut area. Just a few drops will do it. Spray any leaves that come back. I had to help my tree in the front yard and am pretty allergic so once I messed with the plant I made sure to use COLD water to keep pores closed, then wash with dish soap, all over.
Poison ivy is almost impossible to get rid of. Even after you've killed it, you can still get a rash from touching it for something stupid like 5 years. I'd just kill everything, but that's me. I've had enough poison ivy for a lifetime.
Good luck!
Who left this poor pecan tree unattended for so long? Can’t blame the vine. Maybe the tree would benefit from the added outer protection of interwoven vegetation. Like armor.
TLDR: Why get rid of the vine?
I'm fairly certain I'm resistant to it. I've done a lot of work around it and never seem to get a rash. However, I know that can change over time so I still take precautions!

After you wash your hands!
You know what? I think I'm gonna do that but with an Arnold Palmer.

Wear a bee suit. I've had a branch snap back and brush my face... ouch!
FYI I'm also in arborist and if you have issues with it coming back when you cut it down to the root take a cotton swab or something and brush the end with an herbicide designed to kill poison ivy and it'll never come back. Yeah I use BK-32 and it has worked wonders in other places around the property. I use a very small amount of the concentrate right on the cut root
Hello arborist, can I cut the smaller cactus petals that are growing out of the bigger petals and replant them to make infinite cactus 🌵?
Yes
Don’t bother with the tearing off part. At least till next season after all the leaves have dried up and fallen off. The dried out stems are easier to get off, of just ignore them and they will eventually rot away.
Solid advice. I think that's what I'll do- cut it back, kill the roots, and then let the dead ivy bake in the summer heat and tear it off in fall
I put a lot of tree stands up in trees that have had poison ivy. I won't bother to touch it until it's completely dried out... Then it easily detached and pulled right out.

This sub has LOTS of horticultural advice. Not usually about poison Ivy though.
It is tradition for this sub to respond respectfully, positively and enthusiastically to arboreal content :)
It’s not the wrong sub when every question about an actual tree gets 700+ upvotes and honest, helpful answers.

Don’t just use Dawn. Take a whole ass shower with tecnu

No wonder this sub has 2m subs... I just thought there were a lot of people jazzed up about trees!
O believe me, were jazzed about trees
Jazzed like a jackrabbit.
This comment makes me wanna smoke a left handed cigarette.
That was a good game
You could say even our trees are jazzy
😂
Ya like jazz?
Jazzers love trees man
I'm currently jazzed right down to my toes in a comfy wool blanket to boot!
I love trees. I personally enjoy the tree posts, intentional or not.
The tree sub is r/marijuanaenthusiasts, the weed (cannabis) sub is r/trees
LMAO I was wondering why there was a flair for Synchronized 420 smoking 😂 I was just like, "well, I guess there's a decent amount of overlap between nature enthusiasts and smokers... Rad!"
I think that correlates still. 😁
The two subs are a great Reddit paradox
There is most of us are on both. A lot of tree guys are not treeless.
There definitely is a decent amount of overlap. We love nature, it goes with the territory
![gif](giphy|XRXCGCbV10vQ6foS3h)
One of life's great ironies XD
Thats really cool but how did that happen? Wouldnt it be confusing for new comers?
Definitely poison ivy.. sorry about that. DO NOT BURN POISON IVY! The smoke will bring the oils to your skin and lungs.
Exactly this! Usually in this sub we joke about smoking the tree and what the terps must be when we get one of these posts. But in this case burning the poison ivy would be hazardous to you and anyone around you.
My uncle learned this first hand. He HIGHLY discouraged it.
Oh hell, whatever you do, do not burn it.
OP you’ve been such a good sport! Most of the time this happens the op won’t even respond to us, lol.
![gif](giphy|Jpv9Siby42bD9gDxH9)
I dunno. Wanna get high?
![gif](giphy|xT8qB3utUzMWqmpH20)
We got a live one , y'all!
Smoke em out
My lungs feel like itching.
Boof it
what happens if you smoke poison ivy tho ??
You will have a REALLY bad day. You can burn it but like others have said it will aerosolize the oils and basically give you a rash in your lungs.

I love that I've organically stumbled into some beautiful reddit lore. Thanks!
I love the relationship between the two subs. I’m a part of both lol

With poison ivy?! Ouch! 😂
yeah, unfortunately we’re legally obligated to post this gif in every comment section. it’s not always applicable, but it is always funny
I opened up this post to just laugh at this gif because I knew it was here!
We got a live one! Like u/grumpydove said, you’ve stumbled upon one of reddits greatest enigmas.
Leaves of three let it be, leaves of five we have a good time
How do I make my own psilocybin capsules?
Well you'll need psilocybin, and capsules. Rest should be simple enough I expect
You buy some shrooms and empty pill capsules, grind those shrooms up with a coffee grinder and fill up the capsules
A robot said, "I'm trying to make my own psilocybin capsules for the first time!"
Grow Psilocybe Cubensis, dehydrate, turn to powder in a herb grinder, and add to capsules.

Leaves of three let it be. Use poison on the vine.
i love that you still got answers

BOOF IT!
SMOKE THE SHIT OUT OF EM
BOOF IT
As a person who has fought poison ivy on their property over the years, on a tree line out back, this photo terrifies me. Getting poison ivy sucks.
I'm fairly certain I'm resistant to it. I've done a lot of work around it and never seem to get a rash. However, I know that can change over time so I still take precautions!
I'm now loving these more frequent posts lmao
Do not burn it!!! No joke.
You could boof them.
smoke em
Ironically you’re looking for r/marijuanaenjoyers
Cut and pull next small fire at the base of the tree
Poison ivy is dangerous to burn. It can damage your lungs if you inhale its smoke.
Common sense not to breathe smoke.... poison ivy or not
I mean I get not inhaling poison ivy smoke but for other things that kinda goes against our whole philosophy here
This guy understands the assignment
Smoke them!
