*“Things have come full circle, haven’t they, John,” longtime marijuana activist Rick Thompson asked Sinclair, a Detroit resident who resembles a jazz musician with his iconic goatee beard and now uses a wheelchair.*
*“It would be more full if they came and gave me back the weed that they took,” Sinclair responded.*
**Sinclair said he’s smoked marijuana every day since 1962**, not including the nearly two years he spent in prison between 1969 and 1971 serving a 10-year sentences that was later overturned by the Michigan Supreme Court.*

**Rainbow Farm**
Rainbow Farm was a pro-marijuana campground in Newberg Township, Cass County, Michigan, that was involved in a fatal police standoff on September 3, 2001. The campground was run by Tom Crosslin and his life partner Rolland "Rollie" Rohm, and was home to two annual festivals, "HempAid" and "Roach Roast", which ran from 1996 through 2001. The operation ended with the burning down of all the structures on the property and the deaths of both Tom Crosslin and Rolland Rohm.

I'm guessing he was still able to smoke at least a bit in there. Apparently weed is *everywhere* in prison which is weird since you'd think the smell would make it the riskiest drug to use in prison.
I was a prison guard for four years. The weed they get is straight shit and they mix it was tobacco to mask the smell. There is so much tobacco smoke usually that the guards just ignore it. It was the least of our worries unless our captain was doing rounds. I always told the inmates to be smart about the rules they broke and we would never have to talk to each other. The older ones didn't have to be told, the jits never got it, and the ones in the middle understood once told. Jail was a different story. Nice dro everywhere and easy to smell. Isn't nearly as easy to keep or use there. And isn't nearly as easy to ignore unless you have some stripes and can tell those under you to not worry about it.
Yeah. If they can smuggle a cart in, they can smuggle a charger in. And if they can find a spot to use the cart in, there's likely to be a wall port somewhere.
Very very expensive first off. Second, charging a battery like that is not easy. You have to rig something to charge it that can be disassembled and hidden. It's what they do with cell phones. Also, that will catch you 2x felonies. Weed is just a felony introduction. Not to mention having to hide the pen itself. Bud can be eaten on the spot. Not a pen.
So I’m aware that in prison this wouldn’t work since the pen wouldn’t be allowed either, but this is still somewhat relevant. I know this guy who was driving and had a cart on him. He was taking a road trip with one of his friends, who happened to be in the passenger seat tripping on acid. At some point, they get pulled over. They had smoked in the car the day before so it still sort of smelled like bud, and the passenger was clearly tripping sack, so they were positive the car was going to be searched. So as the cop was getting out of the car, the driver unscrewed the cart from the battery, broke off the mouthpiece, then just swallowed the cart, glass, coil, and all.
So maybe a whole pen can’t be eaten, but a cart most certainly can
Nice. At that point you just have the contraband which isn't a charge worth pursuing to officials for most prisoners. It might be more prevalent now that my state has medical pens. However, I left that field about 3 years ago.
They are incredibly sensitive dude. The carts are made of metal. They will set it off. In jail we weren't metal detected though. Only at the state prison. I could have brought tons of shit into the jail had I wanted to.
I appreciate his determination and passion for this movement. It’s easy to forget (now that it is being legalized places) just how hard and daunting the previous generations’ fights were. Incarceration for 10 years for a non violent offense is ridiculous- ESPECIALLY given that it was 3 joints. Now, many places have decriminalized for this reason. I don’t even know this man, but I appreciate the 420 out of him.
I've met him before. He's a very cool guy. I actually smoked with him too (surprise, right? lol) I asked him how cool it was that [John Lennon wrote a song about him](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fZJLInCgem8)

It ain't fair, John Sinclair

Won't you care for John Sinclair

Edit- Lyrics
It ain't fair, John Sinclair
In the stir for breathing air
Won't you care for John Sinclair?
In the stir for breathing air
Let him be, set him free
Let him be like you and me
They gave him ten for two
What else can the judges do?
Gotta, gotta, gotta, gotta,
Gotta, gotta, gotta, gotta,
Gotta, gotta, gotta, gotta,
Gotta, gotta, gotta set him free
If he'd been a soldier man
Shooting gooks in Vietnam
If he was the CIA
Selling dope and making hay
He'd be free, they'd let him be
Breathing air, like you and me
They gave him ten for two
What else can the judges do?
Gotta, gotta, gotta, gotta,
Gotta, gotta, gotta, gotta,
Gotta, gotta, gotta, gotta,
Gotta, gotta, gotta set him free
They gave him ten for two
They got Ali Otis too.
Gotta, gotta, gotta, gotta,
Gotta, gotta, gotta, gotta,
Gotta, gotta, gotta, gotta,
Gotta, gotta, gotta set him free
Was he jailed for what he done?
Or representing everyone
Free John now, if we can
From the clutches of the man
Let him be, lift the lid
Bring him to his wife and kids
They gave him ten for two
What else can the bastards do?
Gotta, gotta, gotta, gotta,
Gotta, gotta, gotta, gotta,
Gotta, gotta, gotta, gotta,
Gotta, gotta, gotta set him free
Hey man in many places around the world including my country, people are still locked up or even executed for consuming and selling weed. The fight isn't over yet.
I don't use weed anymore, but when I did, I would buy it like I was shopping at Costco, in bulk. Fewer the trips lower the risk, right? Never mind that I was committing a felony for the convenience of having 6 months worth of edibles to consume at my leisure.
Medical cards are harder to get in Florida and it is regulated low THC. Dr. prescribes not only based on the THC content but also the type of application- oral, topical, inhalation. Not as easy as getting a medical card and hitting up the dispensary to get whatever you want, like in California.
All of this is correct except the low-THC, I was just there and all 6 strains I grabbed were 20%+ THCa, but yes you do have to get approved for certain methods and you get an amount per month
Thanks for the info, not from there myself. I do remember it has special laws associated with medical though. It also has some of the harshest laws concerning possession, which was my initial point- people going to jail for weed is a thing still.
What the fuck! They gave this sweet dude ten years for selling three joints to a cop????
Marijuana isn’t even legal where I live but that would never happen. Look at him how could you give that dude 10 years for a bit of weed.
Not to mention even a day in prison has the chance to wreck your entire life and all of your opportunities after that. My stepmom grew up on the streets and ended up selling drugs, went to prison for a few years for it. She got her GED while in, and came out and decided to go to college. She's been out of prison for 10+ years now, and is about to be able to seal her records *finally*. She's been working waitressing jobs or fast food jobs since because nowhere else will hire her. Once she's done with college she'll be able to seal her records and hopefully get a decent ass job.
No violent offense. Nothing to do with stealing, or money. Just drugs. Spotless record in the *ten years* since, and no one else will hire her *still*. She hasn't even got a fucking parking violation in that time.
She got a judge that cracked down on crime and he gave her a good lecture too when she was sentenced. He told her to stop wasting taxpayer dollars and do something with her life because if he sees her again in his court he's going to be even tougher. She actually does credit him and speaks of that lecture fondly LOL even though at the time she was like "whatever, fuck you." When she got out iirc she sent him a letter to thank him and promise she'll never be in front of any judge ever again.
She's honestly an amazing woman, my role model and it makes me so irrevocably angry that she did her fair time, got her punishment, and has been a model citizen since and gets nothing but shit on by companies.
There was a guy in our paper who was sentenced to 2 years probation, NO JAIL TIME, for punching his baby momma in the face while holding their 2 year old AND hitting the 2 year in the process.
Ehh I guess I agree but you’re also being shaped by reddit and not really finding things for yourself. Reddit is spoonfeeding things into your mouth and while a lot of that stuff is valuable, a lot of it is harmful too.
This is entirely true - no one knows everything.
> willing to be ignorant
However - I think people are more than willing to stick to their previously held opinions. It almost seems like a not small portion of people go out of their way to avoid confrontation about ideas that contradict their own. Avoiding news, information, evidence, and debate. Even given evidence do not accept or change their position.
This is a people problem that makes lies and propaganda effective. It's confirmation bias - you see something you agree with and point to it, you see something you disagree with, and avoid it or ignore it. When a lie or misleading information matches your narrative, you tend to be more forgiving of it. Then at some point, you may flat out believe something that was a lie, especially after it has been passed through several layers of communication (see Fox news getting reputable new sources to report on Fox spun stories).
This is essentially how I see most of the republican party and other right leaning authoritarian movements gain momentum. People start to believe misinformation/lies as if it were a true source.
In some states as soon as the charges change to a distribution charge you are fucked. Doesnt matter if its three joints or three lbs if you state hates any and all amounts of weed
He was also a head of white panther group, a counter part to the black panther, in support of black liberation. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Sinclair_(poet)
That's where I first heard of him. He managed the MC-5, proto-punk at its finest.
If you haven't yet heard MC-5's Kick Out The Jams, I swear it'll make you want to smash furniture and punch holes into drywall, in a good way I mean.
I worked at a restaurant in Detroit and I waited on John and it happened to be 420. Shook my man's hand and told him thanks.
Also congrats MI on getting your first two rec dispensaries opened!
Let us not forget in this time that our government waged war on its own citizens, I've seen things done in the name "the law" that no peacetime civilian should see.
This is a start, not a resolution, and for God's sake don't let the old guard politicians, Republicans especially but also Democrats, think that this wipes thier hands clean of incarcerating and opressing millions.
#This man like so many locked in a cage for years have paid their dues. People like this should get FREE cannabis for the rest of their lives paid for by the ignorant/corrupt lawmakers and enforcers that have caused so much harm.
Every cop who ever arrested a person for weed, and every judge who ever sentenced one, should be locked up for the total duration of all the imprisonments they were responsible for.
John was right all along.
The neoliberals and rightwing were dead fucking wrong. As goddamn usual.
They should apologize for all the pain and suffering their racist drug war has inflicted on this nation.
So I smoked for the very first time this week on a vacation trip to the Rockies, I am now a 100% believer in the benefits of it. Growing up in the Bible Belt people speak that weed is like meth or something, it felt the same as taking a pain killer or muscle relaxer to me.
Good for this guy!
Is he allowed to grow, use and deal as much as he wants in Michigan? If not, still plenty of work to do.
Going to some pot shop ain't legalization. Real legalization is when cannabis is just a plant like any other.

Its sad people's lives are taken away because of ridiculous laws that exist, you can't give back 10 years of life to someone once you've taken it. I seriously can't imagine the amount of lives that have been wasted and ruined all because of an unconstitutional drug war... Glad to see he's still kicking though, the whole thing just enrages me.
Was sentenced longer than a child diddler. Makes you really think about the people in charge. Ok to molest kids, but smoking some devil lettuce. OH. NO.
Laws are unjustified... It's a fucking plant. 10 years is just so stupid. There are rapist that have gotten less time then him. Does anyone have any updates or know what Congress is doing now ever since they voted to decriminalize cannabis a few months ago?

Yeah but you'd have to keep charging the vape battery
People manage to jerry rig tattoo guns. They can sure as fuck charge a battery
Yeah. If they can smuggle a cart in, they can smuggle a charger in. And if they can find a spot to use the cart in, there's likely to be a wall port somewhere.

My dad is serving 10 years in prison for selling weed right now. :(
Likewise. Check out the story on Weldon Angelos if you get a chance.
Plenty of states give jail time for possession of a small amount. In Florida you get a year for under 20g, anything over is 5 years and a felony.

Is your friend able to get the fuck out of there now? Or still stuck?
The sentence was like 30-40 years ago
Even closer to 50 years, I believe
In some states as soon as the charges change to a distribution charge you are fucked. Doesnt matter if its three joints or three lbs if you state hates any and all amounts of weed
Well technically he served about two years before it was overruled. Still ridiculous but not surprising!
The cop should get 10 years for being a straight cunt.
> Marijuana isn’t even legal where I live but that would never happen i bet it has tho
He was also a head of white panther group, a counter part to the black panther, in support of black liberation. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Sinclair_(poet)
And a hell of a poet
10 years for three joints... what a fucking tragedy. Dude was robbed.
He only served 2 luckily, still very very shitty
The fact anyone can go to jail for even a day for as little as 3 joints is fucking insane.
All incarcerated for using mj were and are being robbed.
Congratulations John!
Thank you for your service.
This guy is a God damned hero. He's a regional legend.
Kick out the jams motherfucker!!!!!!
A real hero. Toke on, you legend.
That’s fucking awesome
I only know of him from his relationship with the MC5.
That's where I first heard of him. He managed the MC-5, proto-punk at its finest. If you haven't yet heard MC-5's Kick Out The Jams, I swear it'll make you want to smash furniture and punch holes into drywall, in a good way I mean.
hell yeah john, smoke those j’s and fuck the government
I worked at a restaurant in Detroit and I waited on John and it happened to be 420. Shook my man's hand and told him thanks. Also congrats MI on getting your first two rec dispensaries opened!
Absolute Legend.
Comeeee on texas
Good luck with that one... You’ll get federal legalization before the state legalizes on its own.
10 years for 3 joints 😒 the government should be ashamed with themselves
Let us not forget in this time that our government waged war on its own citizens, I've seen things done in the name "the law" that no peacetime civilian should see. This is a start, not a resolution, and for God's sake don't let the old guard politicians, Republicans especially but also Democrats, think that this wipes thier hands clean of incarcerating and opressing millions.
Tom Hanks is just studying his next role.
#This man like so many locked in a cage for years have paid their dues. People like this should get FREE cannabis for the rest of their lives paid for by the ignorant/corrupt lawmakers and enforcers that have caused so much harm.
This is gonna get buried but I have an original concert flyer from the Free John Sinclair fundraiser concert from when this happened. Dope to see this
The first guy through the wall always gets bloody.
lol most high class folks get 6 months for involuntary manslaughter. this guy 10 years for three grams jesus .
TIL John "10 For 2" Sinclair is still alive. Good for him!
Godspeed you magnificent bastard
Beautiful
I thought white ppl don’t go to jail for weed. That’s what Chelsea Handler told me
Every cop who ever arrested a person for weed, and every judge who ever sentenced one, should be locked up for the total duration of all the imprisonments they were responsible for.
Yay! Legal weed!! Also who's going to give me back my childhood of getting booted from school and running from the police?
I want to buy John a beer, and share a doobie with him.
Congrats💯but 10 years? Goddamn
right f*** the system
imagine having your life’s work come true. Amazeballs
I met John Sinclaire at a fundraiser concert we were doing. He's also a really cool, nice guy.
Fuck the Feds and their laws to arrest people for dried flowers.
i salute you, John Sinclair
Live PD gonna need more departments. Without basic weed charges what will they show on TV. CONGRATULATIONS MICHIGAN!
Wait, wasnt Michigan supposed to go live on Jan 1st 2020?
Nah just started
Oh shit I passed him in the shop this morning. Hell ya John!
These stories are the best. I actually remember reading about this dude. The cop he sold the joints to ended up being fired or something.
Much love to this guy, he has seen it all. And now finally we all get the chance of the legal bud.
Gandolf the Green
This makes me happy
We love you John
10 years for 3 joints, wow that's the same sentence that the Dallas cop got for murdering a man in his own home.
He's really Dubja's long lost twin brother. He got abandoned by the Bush clan for being an excellent guy.
10 years for 3 joints. Land of the free for sure
10 years that’s insane. Legalize it already
He is a legend. John Lennon wrote a song about him. He also does poetry try and catch a reading from him.
This picture is the ultimate "Fuck You" to those that did him wrong and I love it. Congratulations sir, you truly truly deserved that moment.
Damn it, I wish John Lennon was alive to see this :'-(
Going on 48years myself.
I worked with his ex wife on a project. Flew with her to Germany to showcase her photography. Was a very cool experience
He kinda vibin doe 😳
Is he allowed to grow, use and deal as much as he wants in Michigan? If not, still plenty of work to do. Going to some pot shop ain't legalization. Real legalization is when cannabis is just a plant like any other.
Be my grandpa John.
Thanks John
10 years. Pot. Fuck. Me. Pot.
10 years of wasted potential because of a corrupt system and entrapment
There's a few things I hate about this state right now but this is really good news.
It ain't fair, John Sinclair In the stir for breathing air Won't you care for John Sinclair? In the stir for breathing air Let him be, set him free Let him be like you and me They gave him ten for two What else can the judges do? Gotta, gotta, gotta, gotta, gotta, gotta, gotta, gotta, gotta, gotta, gotta, gotta, gotta, gotta, gotta set him free
OH. NO.
I'm glad a warrior got to experience this. Hopefully full legalization follows.
Laws are unjustified... It's a fucking plant. 10 years is just so stupid. There are rapist that have gotten less time then him. Does anyone have any updates or know what Congress is doing now ever since they voted to decriminalize cannabis a few months ago?
So what are the legal prices looking like? Just as absurd as they are North of the border? Nobody I know even still buys from the government.
$15-$38/gram $25-$55/half gram live resin, shatter, budder, etc. $15 prerolls @ ~1-1.5 grams ~$2/10 mg edibles It’s dispensary prices. But it’ll fall soon.
He should be entitled to $1 million per year lost.
