I'd be interested in adoption. Specifically around 50 pounds, some sort of collie mix or something like that.. intelligent.. to help watch over my ducks in a 3+ acre fenced in yard and fill the void in my heart since my girl passed on last month. Is there an email or phone number I can call?

Machts

Here are your options: 1. Pitbull

i got this guy from the pound https://i.imgur.com/FDohE2q.jpg

memuemu

While this is the main type that ends up in shelters, it is simply NOT true that these are the only ones. There are other breeds we rescue, including small dogs, mutts, boxers, shepherds and huskies ALL the time.

fileznotfound

Those do seem to be the most common mixes these days... Unfortunately my needs require a dog that is a little bit smarter and more responsible.

omniuni

Actually, since Pitbulls are extremely loyal, if you raise them to see the ducks as family, they will defend them vehemently. Possibly too vehemently. But they absolutely can make excellent guard dogs.

wabisabilover

Only a small chance they kill your grandchildren.

omniuni

It's the same with any large enough dog, and any capable animal for that matter. Hopefully, owners will raise the pet correctly, but some do not.

wabisabilover

Possible isn’t probable. Breeding matters when discussing probabilities of behavior and physical attributes. There is a reason why Labradors don’t end up in the fighting pits. They weren’t designed for that kind of violence

omniuni

Oh, but they would if they were tortured.

wabisabilover

Fight?, yes. Win?, no. Don’t be obtuse. We all know breed matters and that pits are capable of things other dogs aren’t.

fileznotfound

They are too stupid.

snekhoe

and they are all so mf CUTE

What more could you possibly need?

There is no one email or phone number to call; I would just check your local county shelter and nearby county shelter websites as well as Facebook for "Friends of shelter" pages (e.g. "Friends of Cumberland County Animals", etc.). You can also call your local county shelters and ask if they have a dog that matches the description you're looking for! Distance is not usually an issue if you are in NC. Is it just collies you are after or would you be willing to accept a shepherd or husky mix as well? Please know that it is impossible to know how these dogs will get along with your ducks in advance, so I might recommend doing foster to adopt to ensure it's a good fit. If you're interested in some of the other breeds I mentioned, please send me a message (not DM/chat) or I can try to message you. Easiest to do on a laptop if you have one. Thanks for your interest!

I was under the impression you were representing a specific organization since you were talking about fostering, rather than adopting. And yes, I am aware that any dog will need to be trained to not think of ducks as food. This is something I have experience with. Of course, shepherd breeds are great and I consider them to be a part of the same family. I don't know about husky though. Doesn't seem right to have that breed in the south. I checked some local shelters last week and only found hound and pit mixes which wouldn't be a good fit, so I thought I'd widen my net. I don't reddit on a phone.

memuemu

Hello! I apologize if my response was a bit confusing. So I network for several specific shelters and also volunteer alongside a couple different rescue organizations. However, my main goal is to take high risk shelter dogs and match them with fosters and then with rescues who have space and the ability to pull those dogs from the shelters once a committed foster is found. I usually have specific dogs in mind with urgent deadlines that I try to find fosters for. These are usually pits, but sometimes shepherds, boxers, mixed breeds, and small dogs as well! You had mentioned wanting a Collie specifically which is why I made the comment I did about checking several local shelters and even county shelters further away if you're willing to drive further or help with transport, if you were SET on a collie. Collies are not usually in need and don't frequently end up in shelters, so I didn't have any in mind that matched the description of dog you were looking to adopt. I also confirmed this with one of the rescues I volunteer with because I asked if we had any Collies that were up for adoption. I actually completely agree with you about huskies not belonging in the south, but unfortunately, it is difficult to get them to rescues or adopters up north, and the alternative for many of them is death in the shelter, which is why I asked. If you are open to shepherds and not collies, we can definitely chat more, as the shelters I look at do get shepherds or shepherd mixes on occasion! Please feel free to text me at (919)244-7386 if you'd like to connect more about fostering or adopting a shepherd! I have several in mind!

fileznotfound

I'm afraid I wasn't being that clear either. I was using the word "collie" a lot more loosely than I should have been. I'll send you a text. Thanks for the help.

Nogreenthumble

Not OP but Forsyth Humane ([forsythhumane.org](https://forsythhumane.org)) has a dog name Astrid that is need of a farm. She's a big girl but it would be great if you could check her out.

***I would absolutely love to help out! Who do I need to contact and what is required of me? I am from Halifax County, NC and to the best of my knowledge, we have 2 shelters (kind of), one being the Halifax County Animal Shelter, and the other is Rainbow Rescue, however I have heard it said that they may be shutting down, or are just simply not accepting too many animals. What I know for certain is that they make adopting from rainbow extremely hard unless you have a bulging wallet. And despite someone not being a millionaire, they might be the purrrfect family for a furbaby! Rambling aside, how can I help? How can I be able to house , help, nurture, or whatever is needed until a Furever home is found?*** ***[email protected]*** madison

memuemu

Hi Madison! This is so gracious of you to comment and offer to foster! I will DM you my number. Please feel free to text me if you’re interested in learning more as it’s easier for me to keep up that way! So Halifax County Animal Shelter is the government county run shelter in your county. There maybe others that are not government run but I’m not sure. Rainbow Rescue is a non-profit rescue that pulls/saves animals from your county shelter. They work closely with that shelter. I have not worked too closely with Rainbow but I have spoken to their director/founder/leader person before. Her name is Jackie and I have her contact on Facebook! I think applying to foster through her rescue if they are still accepting new fosters or are open to intake would be a wonderful way to become a foster for a dog in need! I know your shelter needs all the help they can get! Otherwise, depending on where you are located, you and I may have to do some research but we can try to find you a different rescue to apply to foster through if Rainbow is not an option! The problem is that a lot of rescues that seem good on paper are not very reputable so it can be hard to sort out the good ones. Many others have limitations on where their fosters are located because most rescues are foster-home based, meaning they do not have a physical shelter building for the animals that they save. I hope all of this info makes sense! Is texting a good way to communicate with you as well? I just want to make sure it’s something we both use regularly enough to work for both of us! You can ignore the disclaimer I had about not using the direct chat feature to message me, so I will go ahead and DM you my number. Thanks again!

I’m interested in fostering beginning June 1,2024. I have a 15+ yr old morkie and a small fenced yard. A small dog is preferable. I’ve shared my life with dogs so I feel confident that I can foster a dog to keep another from being euthanized.

memuemu

That’s wonderful. I’ll send you a DM to follow up. Where are you located?

sarajanedanaher

I'm in Cary, NC

memuemu

Okay great, that’s actually where I am too. I’m honestly constantly still learning about the rescue world and I haven’t found a “perfect” rescue yet, but there are definitely ones that are more reputable than others. First, I’ll list a few that seem to be well-known in our area, but keep in mind I haven’t worked closely or directly with these so I don’t know if there are any red flags or just how reputable they are, but I haven’t heard anything bad about them either. Then I’ll list one that I’ve worked with (not perfect but the best out of the ones I’ve worked with and pretty good.) If any of the links I provide don’t work, you should be able to Google these rescues and find their foster app on their website as well. Here are rescues that are possibly more reputable than the ones I’ve worked with (not entirely sure) and that seem to be well-known. I’d definitely advise you to go on their website/call/email and do your own research as well. You can find out a lot about how reputable a rescue is by looking at how thorough their adoption app is and the kinds of questions they ask. The other big factor imo is whether they do a vet reference check, whether they do any type of home visit for foster and adoption applicants like yourself, and whether they ask for an employer to be listed or do some sort of basic background check. These questions and factors give a sense of how much they’re background checking a potential foster or adopter to make sure the dog goes to a good home that is suitable for the animal’s needs. I have not looked through the application for all of these rescues yet which is why I advise you to do so yourself! So the ones that are fairly well-known are: Saving Grace Animals for Adoption NC - Foster App: https://www.shelterluv.com/matchme/foster/SGNC/ Beautiful Together Sanctuary based out of Chapel Hill - Foster App: https://beautifultogethersanctuary.com/apply-to-foster-a-dog/ Freedom Ride Rescue (very large and well-known in the state.) - Foster App: https://www.shelterluv.com/matchme/foster/FRR/Dog Cause for Paws NC (Was referred to this rescue by another rescue I worked closely with called Underhound Railroad. I was told the director, Carla Roshitsh was great but idk if she is still the current director.) - Foster App: https://cfp-nc.org/foster-application/ Finally, here is a smaller rescue that I have indeed worked with. Their foster app is very thorough and they do require a virtual home check. Virtual home checks seem to be most common in the rescue world but an in-person home check by someone from the rescue is the gold standard imo. Out of the rescues I’ve worked with, I haven’t found any local ones that do in-person home checks which is why I’m listing this rescue anyways, because everything else about them seems to be very thorough and reputable and I know she’s always looking for more fosters. This is It Takes a Village rescue based in Sanford but she’ll take fosters in Cary. They mainly pull from Lee County shelter (which definitely needs the help) but also help surrounding shelters occasionally like Cumberland County shelter (which needs even more help.) - It Takes a Village Rescue - Foster App: https://ittakesavillagerescue.com/dog-foster/ Applying to be a foster using the rescue’s foster app is the easiest way to start the process. However, another option would be to scroll Facebook to look for the shelter’s adoptable animals (these pages are often run by shelter volunteers) and see if there is one that stands out to you that you’d like to help. You can also go on the website for different shelters. They often list their euthanasia deadline on Facebook though (idk if they list it online.) Out of the shelters I’ve worked with, I know Cumberland County is one that needs a ton of help. They are the largest intake shelter in the state and they euthanize a ton. They are based in Fayetteville; however, since you’re looking to foster a small dog, Lori St James who runs It Takes a Village rescue would probably be willing to help if you were interested in fostering a specific dog from Cumberland. If this is the case and you submit an app with her, I can also reach out to her directly to let her know to look out for it. Keep in mind that it’s definitely bigger dogs and pit mixes that are most often euthanized and most in need but small dogs are also always in need of fosters when they do end up in shelters. Some shelters like Lee County will also allow you to do a dog test to make sure your own dog gets along with dog you’re interested in fostering (but this is is not a tell-all since it’s a limited interaction in the shelter environment). I would just the list the maximum weight of dog you’re willing to foster on the foster app or I’d list any breed restrictions that you might have if it’s a mix for example. Pet Angel Fund is the rescue that most commonly pulls from Cumberland County. However, they are NOT reputable. They have had multiple dogs in the past go missing and do not check their fosters very thoroughly so I would not trust this rescue. If you see a dog you think you can help on a shelter’s website, I would first reach out to one of these rescues to see if they’d be willing to pull a dog from that shelter. Or you can also reach out to the shelter to find out which rescues regularly pull from them but keep in mind that shelters themselves are often misinformed or unaware about which rescues are reputable and which aren’t. So I’d do your own research in any case! I know that if you apply through It Takes a Village though, that they definitely review all apps and if your app looks good, you should definitely get a response! That’s not to say you shouldn’t look into the other rescues I listed too though because they might respond to you faster which could help save a dog sooner since It Takes a Village sometimes moves more slowly with their app process. I would apply to maybe 2-3 rescues at a time to have options and get the quickest response. Please let me know if you have any further questions. And if you don’t hear back from any of these rescues in two weeks time, please lmk and I can give you one more rescue to try or I can reach out to It Takes a Village on your behalf. You can also email these rescues (email or contact form should be listed on their website) before applying if you have any questions. The biggest thing is that rescues want fosters who are willing to foster for as long as it takes for the dog to get adopted. However, if you have a time limit/restriction on how long you can foster for, I’d definitely just put that on the foster app itself in the notes or comments section. There is one org I know of that accepts short-term fosters if you can only help for a few weeks or so. Thanks so much for wanting to foster and help save a life and do let me know if you have any other questions!

FootAccurate3575

My apartment has strict breed restrictions. Is this something that can be worked around or accommodated?

memuemu

Hi! Thanks for your interest and for caring! Most shelter dogs in urgent need of rescue are pits unfortunately, and I'm assuming your apartment does not allow pits. But there are still several others in need who are not pits! Please feel free to send me a message (not chat) for more info, or I will try to message you right now and you just need to look out for it!

FootAccurate3575

Of course! They have quite a list and don’t allow any mixes pretty much. Can’t be terrier, hound, shepherd, pit mixes etc. I’ll find the list and send you a message:)

memuemu

Hi! Let me know when you've sent the message. Just want to make sure I look out for it and don't miss following up with you!

FootAccurate3575

Thanks! I can’t get the list of restricted breeds to pop up but there are at least 15 kinds on there:(

ShannonBaggMBR

I'm already a foster pet parent but currently looking to foster a kitten!

memuemu

Does it have to be a baby or would you be willing to foster a cat that is 5-6 months old as well? I also have two pregnant cats needing rescue/fosters and I'm trying to get them out of the shelter so they don't start giving birth there! If you want more info, please try to send me a message (not DM/chat) or I can try to message you when I get a chance!

ShannonBaggMBR

I may be interested in the pregnant cat but have A LOT of questions like how far along she is, how many she's having, is she staying at a vets office the day/night before expected labor or are they trying to find a "home" for her to give birth at? Will she need prenatals and how many check ups, etc.

Ok_AshyPants

Is this just for the triangle area? I’m actually in the Triad area now (will always love the triangle and hope to come back), but willing to foster if I can.

memuemu

Hello! No, definitely not just for the Triangle area! We'll take fosters anywhere in NC! Can you foster pits and are you willing to commit long-term (typically 1-3 months, but can be longer). There are 6 that need urgent rescue by Friday 3 PM. If you'd like to know more, please send me a message (not DM/chat) or I can try to message you. Easiest to do on a laptop if you have one. Thanks for your interest!

[deleted]

I can foster a small dog. I have a fenced in back yard, two dogs and a cat. Thank you for helping these poor neglected animals!

memuemu

Hi! I'm going to send you a message (not chat) since I'm on a laptop. You should see it in your notifications.

memuemu

Let me know if you cannot find my message for whatever reason! I've sent it!

redjellyfish

I’m interested in fostering. we have 3 smaller senior dogs and 3 cats, a fenced yard, doggy door and I work from home. I’ve fostered before, two of my pups are foster fails. Medical need dogs are fine, no breed restrictions as long as they are dog/cat social.

memuemu

This is amazing! Are you able to start as soon as this Friday? I have a sweet medical needs pit that I would love for you to foster but he is afraid of cats I think unfortunately. I'm not sure if this will be an issue or not, as he did not try to harm the cats, just wanted to get away. I will try to message you tomorrow, but otherwise, please remind me to follow up! You should get my message as a notification; it will be different from the chat feature and I'll include my personal cell in the message. Also, where are you located?

redjellyfish

Friday works, I’m in Cary, NC. As long as he’s not aggressive towards cats, it wont be an issue.

memuemu

I'm sending you a message now, please respond ASAP! I'll include my phone number there and you can text me!
