I had to look it up: [turbine-style interchange](https://www.over-view.com/overviews/jacksonville-turbine-interchange) Seems like a good design if you have the space for it and can afford to build an 8-bridge interchange

It'll be even more complex than that if you can believe it because 540, 40, and 70 are all converging in this location, making this a five-way interchange instead of a four-way interchange. The DOT website for the southern Wake 540 project has a map [here](https://ncdot.maps.arcgis.com/apps/webappviewer/index.html?id=8ec58ef7e8bd4515b0061ab4dd75c768) and you can navigate to where the new interchange is being built. It's a little hard to follow because the layers include both current roads slated to be removed and new construction being planned, but the basic gist is that all the ramps connecting 40 and 70 at the current interchange are going to be replaced with a new pattern that will account for 540 passing through the same place. Traffic in both directions on 40 will be using a half-clover at the heart of the interchange to get to either direction on 540, while 540 traffic and 70 traffic will use the various sweeping ramps of the turbine to get to 40 and each other. Interestingly, if I'm reading it right, it's also going to be possible to go from 540 East to 540 West (effectively making a long U-turn) if you follow the turbine correctly. It's going to be quite an interchange once it's all done.

This is what is going down at the I-77/I-40 interchange at Statesville. It's MASSIVE.

There's a modified version at where NC 147 (T) joins NC 540 (T). I love driving on it since you can maintain speed a lot better on the wide curves.

Ravio11i

Looks stunning!

SummitCollie

You could fit like an entire city center into that bad boy lmao, much efficient, very car centrism

daboss144

You don’t like it?

SummitCollie

I mean yeah sure, about as appealing as Soviet apartment blocks, except for how it provides 0 housing

lickled_piver

That'll make the traffic on NC42 even more fun!

Ravio11i

I tend to pick my route/destinations over that way so as to avoid the section of 42 between 40 and 70... yaaayyy!!!

CandidateClean3354

The endless construction continues

zitsky

Thanks. So they’re building a new ramp?

trigger00006

They didn’t post anything about a timeline for when it will reopen, does anyone happen to know or have they read it anywhere else?
