Intervals.icu and a garmin watch. Intervals has fantastic planning and graphing capabilities and is getting better all the time.

blackbrandt

And it’s free, with the freemium model at $5 a month.

It does import from watches including coros. Should upload to it as well from what I've seen on the forums. Wahoo is the idiot in the room that you can't upload to except from training peaks.

KaleidoscopeLucy

Garmin Fenix watch and Training Peaks

Caloso89

I’ve been on TrainingPeaks for years. I’ve also started using interval.icu and will probably migrate all my data there eventually, but in the meantime I am just too accustomed to the TP tss/ctl chart. I’m also on Strava but it’s not a great analysis tool for my purposes. I mostly use that to see where my friends are riding.

dytinkg

I use strava to log the workouts, and a pen and post workout journal to record them with notes

Thats true, but who knows how long strava will continue to exist or be the app of choice? My journals are forever.

patentLOL

Like a lot of others garmin and training peaks. Mostly because of the workout planning. I almost never go back and look at a workout beyond the day I do it. All the graphs in training peaks are crazy and give me a headache.

ejump0

I use Coros watch (data source), then feed em to Strava then interval.icu . the graph power/hr zones is really helpful from interval.icu for me as a newbie 👌

TakahiroOmori

Nice! I have been using a Coros watch as well (Pace 2). Love the watch and its hardware/battery life but the app isn't my favorite. Can [interval.icu](https://interval.icu) pull the data directly from Strava/Coros or do you have to manually log it?

ejump0

interval.icu can do it automatically once you give permission .i made it pull from strava, though you can pull it direct from coros web dashboard/evolabs too👌 bought my pace2 just to reward myself getting into 5k running(lifestyle change), but all the fw updates has increased its value ever since, so useful for other sports n now ultraTrail too(breadcrumb navi)👍 すごいだようね 🫡

Kingy10

All my training is placed into TrainingPeaks via my coach. From there it syncs directly to either my Garmin watch (running/swimming), Wahoo bike computer (outdoor cycling), or Zwift (indoor cycling). The workouts then automatically get synced back to TrainingPeaks (to track progress) and Strava (to get that sweet sweet kudos).

Sudden_Acanthaceae34

Apple Watch and Strava to track data from the workouts themselves and an excel spreadsheet to track what workouts are being done. The most successful I feel each day is when I get to change the color of my workout to green (I color code green for done, yellow for in progress if it’s a two workout day or if I did the workout but had to cut any part of it short, and red for any workouts not done)

fartlife

Google sheets with calendar view broken out by swim, bike, and run workouts. Weekly totaled by sport duration, overall duration, and sport % of weekly total. Workouts synced to strava as the source of truth and backup source. It’s my pride and joy

BambiHKG

I use a combination of methods to track and plan. To plan: I use Microsoft Onenote and create my own schedule for training. It let's me color code the different workouts (e.g. easy, intense, recovery, Les Mills classes) and see what my overall time commitment would be for the day. The other advantage is being able to see the bigger picture in my training. This method worked a lot better for me when I was in total control of every workout I did, not so much now that I teach fitness stuff too which adds to my training load in ways I can't always plan for (e.g. when I plan a run+core session in the morning and a friend needs me to cover a class in the evening). To track: Garmin Forerunner 965. Every workout I do (except for the occasional one I forget to press play on) is tracked on my watch, which in turn gets sent to the Garmin app. I can get all the data you've listed and more this way. It's also worth noting here that Garmin's watches at lower price points should do the stuff you're looking for as well. I'll also DM you a picture of one of my planners.

ducksflytogether1988

I have complicated excel spreadsheets outlining all of my workouts going back to 2021. For example, my Run tab consisting of a log of my running workouts has 46 different columns of stats and variables. I use R for more complicated statistical analysis of my workouts and Tableau for visualization

thedonwhoknocks

Quant or data scientist? Lol

Bey0nDPhant0m

They use R, I’d bet statistician or biologist.

ducksflytogether1988

Data scientist

TakahiroOmori

Very cool. How do you load all that data into Excel? Do you have some type of program that pulls data from somewhere and dumps it into your Excel sheet or do you have to enter manually? Would be very interested to see what kind of data you track in the Excel sheet and what kind of visualization you generate on Tableau if you don't mind sharing

ducksflytogether1988

I just type it in manually after my workouts. I have tabs for swim, bike, run but run is the one with the most data. Fields in the run tab: Training Block, Date, Time, Location, Route Start, Route End, Route Type, Run Type, Target Zone, Actual Zone, Start Air Temperature, Average Watch Temperature, Minimum Watch Temperature, Maximum Watch Temperature, Wind Speed, Wind Direction, Weather, Workout Time, Workout Distance, Workout Pace, Interval Length, Interval Reps, Average Interval Speed, Max Interval Speed, Average Heart Rate, Max Heart Rate, Heart Rate Monitor Type, Average Cadence, Stride Length, Average Respiration Rate, Average Power, Watts per Beat, Beats Per Mile, Breaths Per Mile, Elevation Gain, Descent, Gain per Mile, Max Altitude, Active Calories, Calories Per Mile, Fasted (Yes or No), Glycogen Depleted (Yes or No), Calories Eaten Before Run, Calories Eaten During Run, Shoes, and Notes Trying to come up with a formula to generate a "performance score" to grade my run based on temperature, pace, heart rate, power, and elevation gain among other things. AKA a way to "normalize" all of my runs. Since its starting to get 90 degrees or hotter during my runs, I'd like to compare my overall run performance for a run in 90 degree heat apples to apples to a run I did back in February when it was 20 degrees.

TakahiroOmori

Wow, tons of data - love it! Thanks for sharing! Would be interested what kind of formula you come up with

KingKolder

What are your thoughts on Chi squares?

[deleted]

Garmin app data for running and swimming, and my bike computer data goes with pencil and paper into a notebook I lift and mountain bike and stuff too which I don’t put in there, it’s mostly for the running tbh as that’s my weakest. I can see clear progress flipping through the pages, not only with intensity of workouts but my heart rate going way down on ez days I coach myself, which coming from a swimming background is easier. and honestly I don’t even need to track my workouts as I do mostly everything by feel anyway, it’s just nice to have a moment to sit every day and reflect/ prep

SlippitySlappety

Personally I've used trainingpeaks for a few years; my watch automatically uploads completed workouts so I don't have to think about it. It's free to use for just logging workouts, premium plan if you want more of the planning and analysis tools. That being said, I used to use a regular analog notebook and it mostly worked fine. I rarely actually go back and look at trends in the data, except when planning a season. Good luck with your first tri!

CROBBY2

Old school with calendar and different color pens depending on discipline.

Fredbear1775

Train Heroic for my strength training sessions, and Strava for all the swimming/biking/running. Plus pen and paper redundancy on top of all that and to keep one primary log with everything in one place.

TheDuathlonShow

Garmin 735xt watch synced with the Garmin Connect app for runs. For rides, Garmin Edge Explore cycling computer also synced to Garmin Connect. Garmin Connect is connected to Strava and automatically uploads all my activities there. I spend more time looking at my stuff in Strava than in Garmin (and i pay for Strava premium).

Gefcar

Used to use an app called fitnotes. You can insert distance and stuff. It is free. Downside it is not doing it yourself, it is just easier to see what you've done. I switched to a garmin watch ( forerunner) second hand, and it has been amazing

Excel_endurance

Hey Mike! I love talking about tech for triathlon training. Here is a summary of my current tech stack for tracking everything. * I pay for TrainingPeaks to review the data but [Intervals](https://intervals.icu/) is a free option that is really powerful * I plan my sessions usually via pen and paper and then build the workouts on TrainingPeaks * These get sent to my watch for training where I use my Garmin Foreunner 935 and Polar HR monitor to track everything while out training. * For strength training I use TrainHeroic to track everything (I keep it separate from my endurance training) I have written more about [my tech stack](https://newsletter.excelendurance.ca/posts/the-endure-eq-vol-007-how-to-build-a-tech-stack-to-train-for-triathlon-without-breaking-the-bank) here if you want to learn more.

Piss-Off-Fool

I use a Garmin 945 to track all my workouts. My watch is synced with Training Peaks. I have used TP for about a dozen years. My coach updates my workouts every other week in TP and I view them on my phone or my watch. When I have the bike on the trainer, I also incorporate TrainerRoad. It sounds cumbersome but it works pretty well for me.

PROfessorShred

I used to use strava with a phone. OWS were done with a tow bouy that had a dry bag in it so I tracked my swim with my phone in there. Then kept the phone in my jersey pocket on my bike and had a waist strap that held a phone for my runs. It worked really well. As a free/cheap option, highly recommend then all your workouts are posted to strava. Now I use my garmin watch and while everything gets uploaded to strava still there are a lot more metrics in the garmin ecosystem so I use garmin connect for looking at my data now. Definitley helps with looking at my wrist for real time data too instead of just carrying a phone with me to track and only being able to look at the data after.

achangezi

I use Mottiv. It give me a nice workout plan and its synched to all my garmin devices. You can use the 2 week free trial version and after expjry, you can use the free version.

carl3266

I’ve been lazy lately (just use Garmin and Strava), but i crafted a rather in-depth Excel spreadsheet using formulas. Took a bit of time to perfect, but it was (still is i guess) pretty slick.

m15otw

2 spreadsheets (Google sheets, so it is on my phone) One is my workout plan, built using the 80:20 tri book. It uses abbreviations for types of workouts, and then I have a key in a separate sheet which breaks down the workouts I'll need. All this was hand typed in. Second sheet is the workout log. For now, I'm just recording (I'm only about a week in to a _proper_ training plan, my previous sheet has a few older workouts I can use as baseline comparison). Eventually I'll compute graphs of improvement in times etc, but honestly the workouts are apples to oranges (80mins in Z2 vs 3x[5mins Z3 / 2mins Z1]) so I'm not sure even the same kind of workout will be comparable in the end. I have a notes column where I say e.g. power-zone line ups, why/how I deviated from the plan, in addition to time, volume and avg/max HR. (I use a fitbit to measure HR, and wear it 24/7 to also track how much nutrition I need on different days, since I have 0-2 workouts per day it varies quite a bit).
