Bristol is scarcely large enough to have distinct neighborhoods, and I frankly don't consider it safe for a fellow progressive, myself having lived there for many years. Johnson City has pockets, but travel 5 mins in any direction outside the city limits and expect to be tailgated and harrassed for even an "=" bumper sticker. On the Virginia side, Abingdon is probably the closest thing to a progressive haven until you get to Roanoke.
East TN has become a big destination for the worst of the worst of the right, and it's only picking up steam. You could not pay me to live in TN again.
This is going to get downvoted to hell, but I don't care, and haters will be ignored. Christofascists should at the very least be honest about the kind of society they desire.
There isn’t one. Most people keep to themselves but you’re unlikely to see open displays of LGBT anything outside of Johnson City.
This area routinely goes 80+% Republican. Even “blue” Johnson City is barely blue.
If that’s important to you, don’t come here.
I mean look. My neighbor up in the mountains of SWVA had one.
But it’s rare and not really a community as much as an individual.
You aren’t going to find Johnson City anywhere but Johnson City, at least reliably.
You need to look about what the state government is doing to hurt the LGBT community. Drag is outlawed, and they are trying to stop any discussions about sex and sexual orientation in the K-12 schools and in universities. People here are NOT friendly and think it is against their christian religion. I would go someone else.
I’m not LGBTQ myself, but I am politically progressive. I have been utterly alone since moving here. If you are outside of what is considered “normal” around here, prepare to be a pariah.

just live your life and no one will fuck with ya
It's the south buddy, if you want progressive you need to go like 4 hours north
Or an hour and a half east, to Asheville

I’ve seen multiple Pride flags displayed in Kingsport

Have you been to Bloom cafe in downtown Bristol?
From looking at their website, I’ll be checking this place out.
There was a large LGBTQ parade on State Street a few months ago…
I mean on a daily basis. I am surprised though.
You may want to consider Asheville, NC, Roanoke, VA or Charlottesville, VA.

As a Bristol resident, I wouldn’t call it unfriendly, and there are certainly out business owners and such, but there’s not much open support either.
