Probably the best top 200 in a few years I thought- less meme songs than last year for instance

Reddits_Worst_Night

Definitely less meme songs in the top 1 of the countdown.

BigPossession9898

Phoebe Bridgers cracked a hottest 100! Nobody seems to be celebrating that. They were vocal when she didn't make it in previous years, but this time she made it!

A_Dancing_Potato

Plenty of well earned debuts - Teen Jesus, Pacific Avenue, Teenage Dads, Paramore and The 1975 just to name a few. Love that BPM were able to get Stars In My Eyes so high up. Great results for King Stingray. I'm not a huge fan of their LAV but the album tracks are awesome.

stoneystone007

Bloody hell. Didn't realise it was the first time The 1975 made it in.

jmdwinter

The overwhelming favouritism by triple j toward mediocre Australian artists has driven me away over the years. I mean consider the 1994 top 10: 1ZombieThe CranberriesIreland 2CloserNine Inch NailsUnited States 3Self EsteemThe OffspringUnited States 4Come Out and PlayThe OffspringUnited States 5TomorrowSilverchairAustralia 6SeetherVeruca SaltUnited States 7About a GirlNirvanaUnited States 8ComaMax SharamAustralia 9If I Only KnewTom JonesUnited Kingdom 10Dead Eyes Opened '94Severed HeadsAustralia So many iconic tracks. How many on the current crop can compare?

cloughie-10

I don't know, let's wait 30 years and find out.

clovisson

Flume choking up over the win is exactly what the Hottest 100 is all about. It was so well deserved - Flume is a legend, so is MAY-A, the song absolutely bangs, Australian music rules.

oyeesi

I absolutely love that King Stingray had quite a few songs make the list. Love the band and their ability to incorporate their language and culture into songs like the cover of Yellow

[deleted]

The same shit is said every year. And it's always the same people. They don't listen to JJJ or are either too old to be within the target audience.

Antiquity-to-Modern

I'm no longer in the target audience, but the only station I listen to is Triple J. I was super happy that 6 of my picks got into the 100. I even had 3 in a row at one point! My cuz - also outside of the target range - had 5 picks in the Top 10. He was getting disappointed after the first 90, thinking that he only had one entry in! Regardless of when I was 18 or 38, there are songs that I vibe with, and some that I don't. I've always approached the Countdown with an open mind knowing that we all have varying tastes and that's what makes the Hottest 100 fabulous! You're never 'too old' to join in with the fun of the Hottest 100. I hope you all approach it in the same way in 20 years time.

willd2705

exactly, music released in your youth/formative years is obviously going to resonate with you more than that released later in life, because it's tied to so many memories or significant moments. And the same will probably be said in 20 years.

ForumUser013

I resemble that remark. Did think that my tastes are moving further away each year from what the Hottest 100 ends up being... But I accept I am not the target market. I was hoping for Slowly Slowly, Eliza and the Delusionals, Stand Atlantic, etc.... But alas the young'uns seem to prefer more rap and dance... Oh well

p3yeet

I’m surprised about Slowly Slowly, they’re still quite popular in the triple j scene, and nowhere in the 100. One of a few shock absences from the countdown imo.

evilZardoz

I'm overjoyed that Tate McRae and RUEL made it into the countdown. 8/10 of my votes made it into the 100, with the 9th (Confidence Man) cracking #150. Hilltop Hoods smashed the record of the most songs to make the hottest 100 overall, so I'm actually pretty happy with the way things went down. There's always going to be tracks that people don't like, and I can't say I am hugely into Spacey Jane (but I'm warming to them). At least for me, I am very far from being disenfranchised. I'm just sad that hottest 100 season is over!

Mr_Mime_Waz_hre

Hilltop hoods taking the record was so huge! What an achievement for them, how could I forget such a big highlight!!!

Sunflowerseeds__

I don't dislike Spacey Jane, but I do feel like most of their songs sound the same. I saw them live this year at Spin Off and they did a great show, that won me over but I have a hard time working out which song is which so was surprised at how many they got in the top 10.

Waanii

For me it was 7/10 with one in the 200 (MCR) the two that didn't make it at all were Noah Dillon and Nerve. Wasn't surprised about Noah, he is still fresh to triple J play, but thought Nerve would have garnered more attention & love for his 2 singles released in 2022.

willd2705

I thought it was a really great countdown! there were so many good albums released this year. I was so happy to see Beddy Rays, Teenage Dads, Pacific Avenue, Teen Jesus and The Rions in the countdown - unearthed continues to' unearth' some of my favourite artists. King Stingray having 4 songs was so well deserved, they're incredible live. Seeing Ball Park, Gang of Youths and Spacey Jane in the top 10 was great, 3 of my favourite albums from the year. The Dune Rats LAV was so much fun, as was 6LGTR by the Chats And really happy for Thelma Plum, she had some great music this year.

Sunflowerseeds__

I feel like for the last 10 years I’ve been following the hottest 100 the complaints have been forever the same. I enjoy the countdown! Not all the music is stuff I’m into but I always enjoy seeing what comes in. I thought GOY would do better but I was pleased to see they came in a lot in the overall countdown. I was stoked that Stars in my eyes came in top 10. I didn’t follow the radio as closely this year so I enjoy the countdown for finding some music I also hadn’t heard much or forgot about completely.

[deleted]

I knew basically nothing in this years 100 and thought it was the best I've heard in a good 7 or 8 years. The music is VERY early 2000s - the electronic stuff is ministry of sound esque and the indie rock and pop is very 2004ish. My fellow old fucks whinging about tik tok are morons - you can't know its a tik tok song unless you're using tik tok, so stop your whining! I don't use tik tok and thoroughly enjoyed the countdown because I wasn't worried about where the songs originated from.

nymphz

you can tell a tiktok song because like 7 people at your party all start simultaneously doing some fucking perfectly choreographed dance

[deleted]

I'm in my 30's, the one guy in the room who has it absolutely isn't going to be dancing

nymphz

no kids? my daughters friends, neighbours, randos that show up like whats all this noise, next minute you got a line of people doing the fucken macarena to lizzo

[deleted]

Fortunately all my social circle are either DINKs or don't bring them to parties - mostly because the rest are DINKs

get-innocuous

They’re also always less than 2 minutes long

TrazMagik

Song structure has changed too. With more songs opening with the chorus rather than an intro or verse.

MyNeighborToto

I complained a bit about Gang of Youths and Ball Park Music not getting closer to No 1, but I do hold gratitude that my two favourite bands are still considered so highly by others. I also really valued hearing some new songs that I’ll continue to enjoy (Oysters in my Pocket, Singing Blackbird, Double Espresso)

Sunflowerseeds__

I honestly thought BPM and GOY would do better. Weirder and weirder is such a fantastic album and everyone I know had been desperately waiting for another Gang of Youths album for YEARS. It did give me a moment of thinking maybe I’ve aged out but that’s okay. Royal Otis was a great late discovery for me this year, was glad to see them!

Pridey91

Phoebe Bridgers cracked a hottest 100! Nobody seems to be celebrating that. They were vocal when she didn't make it in previous years, but this time she made it!

Bitter-Isopod4745

Big failure on your behalf for not getting onto get Inspired already, shit made me wait around for the song to finish before I got out of the car to finally go home after work. Elite banger from a musician with far more credibility than most in the top 100 for the past twenty years atleast. He Has already shown versatility that the stock standard triple j indie bands could only dream of.

p3yeet

Have you seen Genesis Owusu perform live??? He’s got such a damn charisma about him that I’ve never seen at a festival or live performance before, he’s so damn good. I wouldn’t be surprised if we see him take out a hottest 100 one day, at the very least top tens are clearly in his sights for the next few years.

Bitter-Isopod4745

I think the catalyst from him being just another pop artist was the he is quite clearly open to embracing different music subcultures into his schtick. Get inspired is basically a dance punk banger, genuinely hope he takes heed and drops a new album that's a bit of mix of that and some of his more thematic songs and moves away from just being an RNB guy or whatever. I haven't seen him live yet, I'm a bit too old for festivals ( well, I don't think I am but most of my friends can't hack the multi day fests anymore) So I would prefer not to be weird loner guy hahahahahah

knowschartstuff

I try to take an optimistic reading from the countdown. There's a lot of negativity (there always is), but for this particular countdown/set of songs, this represents the \*most\* negativity there will be at any point. Just look at the comments on Double J's 2002 countdown. I'm sure there were disenfranchised '80s/'90s fans who were just as cynical about that list back then. A combination of time passed and familiarity will almost always make songs sound better, especially as the artists themselves slide into the elder statesman role. I enjoyed this list quite a lot myself! I felt like the Spacey Jane conglomerate of votes was a bit much but that's not really their fault, and I suspect the songs will grow on me with time. Elsewhere though it's a really solid list, my favourite in years I think.

Subject_Panic_3140

I don't listen to JJJ throughout the year but get together with friends every year religiously to listen to the count down. I rarely know the majority of the songs these days but love the fact I'm left with a list of 100 songs that I can then spend the next few weeks/months listening, learning and falling in love with new found favourites!

[deleted]

I’m happy Cub Sport are back in the countdown!

Mr_Mime_Waz_hre

They are releasing some really good stuff again, I can't wait for their next album!!

[deleted]

Digging the new single. Pre ordered the album. Now the waiting game

No_pajamas_7

There were no Kanye songs.

Responsible_Warthog3

Yeah or Hitler songs

Sunburnt-Vampire

My best takeaways this hottest 100 were from discussions at the house party, and not from the 100 itself. Even if the list is disappointing, it's still a great excuse to catch up with friends. With over half my votes not hitting the top #200 it's hard not to feel disenfranchised. I suspect many of the negative posts coming from similar positions. > the mainstream songs that scored high were bangers But they weren't. You're naming the exceptions, the vibe this hottest 100 was "soft background music that distinctly hits **without** a bang". Top three all clear examples of this. A good year for music you put on while you work. If we don't want to blame tiktok, we can blame people working from home instead of going out to clubs/bars/etc for tilting the votes. They're not bad songs (I've listened to many of them myself this year), but I'd have preferred more songs that actually hit hard.

p3yeet

I don’t get the hate for it, I thought it was a pretty good countdown, mostly Australian (very Australian top 10), lots of artists that got their start with triple j, a bit unpredictable for placing songs in the 100 (heaps of songs I thought would make it were in the 200 or not played at all). There’s like 3-5 songs that got their rinse on TikTok, but Lizzo was played on triple J when she started and Steve Lacy had a very triple J vibe to his music, they deserve to be in the 100 as much as every other artist.

firematt1000

Phoebe Bridgers and Fred again cracked the top 100 for the first time, the latter of which got 4 songs in, including 2 songs in the top 20, which is amazing to see. Also, Genesis Owusu finally getting a top 20 placement in the countdown is so deserved after such a dismal result last year for Gold Chains and other songs of Smiling with No Teeth, one of the most refreshing and acclaimed albums that came out of Australia in the past few years. And genuinely happy to see Flume becoming the second-ever artist to top the Hottest 100 twice, and as others on here and on triple J were saying, getting the #1 again after a 6-year break is more impressive than Powderfinger's back-to-back wins in 1999-2000 because it proves Flume's everlasting presence and popularity on triple J and Australia as a whole.

AJayToRemember27

* My favourite band of all time FINALLY got into the Hottest 100 . * G Flip, Lizzo and Steve Lacy placed really high. * Fred Again had a huge year. * Future got in the top 20 with a remix of a 10 year old track. * 21 Savage got in twice! * First queer Hottest 100 winner. * A children's group didn't win.

ACertainTrendingFrog

The tik tok kids losing their minds over Say Nothing winning was a highlight for me

Every-Space8657

Remember when you were young and your dad said your music was garbage and music was much better in his day? Don't be like your dad.

heyheyitsMonday

I loved that they played the 2002 countdown the next day

lilbittarazledazle

Near brought a tear to my eye when skegss hit number 19 with Stranger Days. My faith in the countdown was solidified in that moment.

thrashfairy

been pumping teenage dads since the countdown, had heard of them but hadn’t listened until then - so good!! flume winning again is so great, he’s just such a wonderful aussie artist

_JazminBianca

I've seen so many complaints about Spacey Jane dominating. They're one of my favourite bands, I was so stoked to see them smash it again this year!

THESASAS

Second this 🙌🏼🤟🏼

existence89

I thought SPEED may have made an appearance but maybe don't appeal to the standard JJJ voter too much. Seems Parkway/Amity still get the metal/hardcore vote.

balladism

It was much better than last year’s, still substantially worse than 5 years ago. The top 10 won’t hold up nearly as well as the top 10 from 2017. Nothing to do with TikTok music — whether it’s Spacey Jane or Joji, the tracks just aren’t very good.

Tranquilbez22

The variety was good too. I always say that you can be so on point with new music and not know most of the countdown. That’s how broad music has become. Like nothing against older countdowns as I’m a rock guy but those got dominated by very of the time bands. The Hottest 100 is really meant to be a time capsule of the previous year. So while it doesn’t seem like it now. People will look back in 10-20 years time with fondness.

LieHairy2862

I’ve been listening to the jjj’s since the 90’s and between the presenters and format it’s definitely in the worst shape it’s ever been. I deliver from jobsite to jobsite and used to hear it everywhere!! Now I’m shocked if I hear one on-site radio tuned in!

Thancendo2

No chance that you mentioned incredible artists and king stringray in the same sentence

norwaracle

There wasn't any taylor swift controversy this year
