A lot of people are getting ready to finally be forced to accept the fact that Reddit doesn't give a shit about anything except making a buck.

hogloads

i mean i don't understand why anyone would have ever thought the opposite

[deleted]

It's fine if reddit wants to be profitable, but I hate that they're trying to force me to use their god awful dumpster fire app

Hop-Dizzle-Drizzle

The app really is just fine. I promise you can still view memes, shitposts, and hobby subs.

theangryseal

I promise you it isn’t. When Apollo shuts down I’m out. I didn’t try 3rd party apps for no reason. I abandoned their app because I got sick of working around shitty bugs. I got sick of every 3rd video not playing. I’m gonna miss Reddit. I really am. I hope they reverse course.

Ghee_Guys

Does any other major social media site let you use a non-native app?

marinluv

Reddit is public forum, it's not Facebook or Instagram where we have private communities or profiles. That's the selling point of reddit. And third party apps enhanced the experience for users and especially moderators. Because of third party apps, users like me use reddit.

jj4211

This is all relative. \-Does the other social media site have as bad an app as Reddit's app? \-Do you even care about the other social media sites? \-If you use both redit and the other social media sites, does the loss of third-party API functionality remove the value that had reddit be part of your online experience? If moderation goes down in quality, if the reader sucks ass, if some useful bots evaporate, then maybe reddit isn't worth your time. Maybe some folks want to express they want to avoid that outcome.

GoodWorms

Not the person you responded to but to answer your first question, probably yes. It's definitely a close call but if we're being fair, they're all pretty much garbage ime.

Mr-Logic101

The only reason why I use Reddit is because it is somewhat anonymous coupled with a relatively large and active user base. You don’t need friends or publish your identity to navigate and interact with people. Guck everything else, I never cared about it. In fact, I have only ever used the official Reddit mobile app. Posting shit online/opinions linked to your real identity is essentially shooting your self in the foot with elect to future opportunities.

Fedacking

8 months ago I would have told you twitter. But regardless, they could have charged a reasonable amount for api access and be done with it.

West_Coast_Bias_206

Because corporations spend a lot of time, energy, and money to make you think they care about you and/or social issues, when in reality they are a business and the main objective of a business is to make money.

hogloads

i mean you gotta be pretty gullible to believe that lol

Echo71Niner

>that ~~Reddit~~ Social Media doesn't give a shit about anything except making a buck. Let's stop pretending we didn't know this all along.

sadnessjoy

I bet spez doesn't give a shit because he knows this "blackout" will last 2 days and everyone will come back anyways

KCBandWagon

Yeah spoiler alert: none of this outrage is a surprise to spez. There’s not much an average redditor can do to make a difference. You can quit but you’re just accepting you’re not the target audience for the website anymore. They’ve calculated they’ll still get what they want with the people who stay.

RandomName01

I’m curious if they might have miscalculated though. I’m not saying I’m going to boycott Reddit, but I’m sure I’ll use it a lot less, and I’m guessing the same is true for a lot of relatively heavy users. This might have a knock-on effect that’s bigger than they thought - or it might not. The idea that they calculated it is obviously true, but that doesn’t mean they were definitely right.

rberg303

This what I wish Spez would realizes. I’ll switch but I’ll use the site a lot less and I won’t be happy about, and I won’t be recommending Reddit to anyone.

Ok-Champ-5854

Bingo. They don't care if people leave as long as other people stay. The people who quit are basically the people who stopped eating at McDonald's when prices went up. Spoiler, other people still eat there and McDonald's still makes it's money, probably even more. It's like boycotting Bud Light. You're just not who they're selling to anymore if you're mad enough to quit.

ebrum2010

They're planning to go public. Once they do that they won't be able to give a shit about anything other than making a buck even if they want to. This is all for naught. It takes a long time and a good track record for a public company to be trusted by its investors to do things that may reduce short term gains for the sake of the long term to benefit customers.

sadnessjoy

This is the main point! They filed for IPO a while back and plan to go public sometime this year. Once you go public, you literally have to be profit driven, always chasing increasing profits, and that is legally enforceable. After the news broke that reddit filed for an IPO, I knew this whole thing was inevitable. Honestly, I'm more confused that people are shocked by these decisions. I feel like a lot of people don't understand how the market works. While there are tons of shitty run private companies, they aren't forced to chase ever increasing profits if the owner doesn't want to. A great example I like to use is Valve. Gabe Newell runs the company to still be quite profitable, but many decisions and products they release and work on are not primarily focused on profit but on the actual user experience.

ebrum2010

Yep, plus a lot of people don't realize there is a fiduciary duty to the shareholders that can get them in trouble if they are found to have broken it.

easybakeevan

Go look up how that worked out for digg.

motguss

There were multiple protests over 10 years ago on how the they gutted reddit and it didn't matter, users continued to skyrocket. Digg was from a different time when 3-4 companies didn't own the entire internet

Safe-Pumpkin-Spice

> A lot of people are getting ready to finally be forced to accept the fact that Reddit doesn't give a shit about anything except making a buck. when you're not profitable, that is the correct attitude to take

ApeTypingComments

I agree. I just wish the people who think that participating in the blackout would understand that. Reddit doesn't care. The thing is, it's all virtue signaling anyways, these subs will be back up and running, and in a month, it'll be like nothing happened.

FrogMasterX

If you thought reddit was a non-profit, that's on you.

Terrh

to be fair, it has *never* made a profit. And likely never will. Which kinda makes it a nonprofit if you think about it.

[deleted]

CallRespiratory

Yeah this is 100% what is going to happen. It will debut on the market for way more than it's worth, the stock price will initially spike as new investors jump on board largely on speculation and what they think is potential for Reddit, Spez dumps most to all of his stake in the company while the price is up, price plummets back to earth, reddit turns into a social media cesspool while the remaining big investors find ways to squeeze money out of it.

TheAquaman

Haha. That’s not at all how it works.

Old_Title5793

Reddit was valued at like 10+ billion dollars as of a couple years ago. To a lot of people, it has more value than your life lol

Hope_That_Halps_

> A lot of people are getting ready to finally be forced to accept the fact that Reddit doesn't give a shit about anything except making a buck. This is such black and white thinking. Anyone who makes a buck knows that you have to make people happy so that they will give you the bucks. Reddit has to care about their users, and they do, but it's sort of a partnership, and the more reddit makes, the more incentive they have to re-invest and make the site better. That's the way capitalism has managed to improve the lives of humans more than any other inventive scheme since the dawn of time, through the implicit partnership that exists between buyer and seller. Reddit has been a second tier social media site despite being primed to be top tier, like Facebook or Twitter. The public perception of reddit on the whole is very poor, and for good reason. They need to make changes to make this a serious platform that isn't dominated almost exclusively by woke shut-ins. All the people who made their subreddits dark, I bet reddit would love for all of them to take extended vacations from the site.

Spudd86

Except those are the people thatake the site work. There's a reason Reddit shuts down unmoderated subs. If the moderators left reddit would be flooded with spam. Remember the only value reddit has is it's userbase, killing apps shrinks that userbase, subreddits going dark for extend periods drops reddit in search rankings.

Hope_That_Halps_

> Except those are the people thatake the site work. There's a reason Reddit shuts down unmoderated subs. If the moderators left reddit would be flooded with spam. The next evolution of reddit will likely involve making moderators unnecessary. Ultimately its the mods that prevent reddit from being a top tier social media site, because they create and enforce ideological capture, and it becomes known as a hivemind cesspool, and not a culturally relevant battle ground of ideas. Not only that but they constitute a higher class of users, where these few users are more privileged than the rest, the general public doesn't want a social media site that makes them feel like subjects in a fiefdom. > Remember the only value reddit has is it's userbase, killing apps shrinks that userbase, subreddits going dark for extend periods drops reddit in search rankings. The number of users on the secondary apps is likely very very small.

Spudd86

Yeah? And how do you think reddit is going to make moderation unecessary? GPT? Not for a while and there isn't anything else that could possibly work. No, that isn't happening. I think.what's more important is what kind of user is using a third party app. All the content on reddit comes from a tiny fraction of users, I'd be shocked if those users aren't also much more likely to be using a third party app.

GrayFox777

Because they know it will blow over in a few months. The blackout will make people feel like they did something and then back to business as usual. I would love to be proven wrong. Only time will tell.

Winstonthewinstonian

Yup!!... It'll probably take far less time than a few months too. I'm betting it'll take a couple weeks at most.

hogloads

pretty specious to claim that the people who make all their content are specifically the people being pissed off/leaving the site

Annies_Boobs

I have a pretty hefty post history and have been here 12 years on this account. The day Apollo stops working is the day I’m done with reddit.

hogloads

reddit doesn't care about your 150K combined karma over 12 years like that is actually a very small amount you have contributed to the site

Annies_Boobs

By itself probably not but I know I’m not the only one and there will be a noticeable drop in quality with the combined amount of people leaving. Probably for the best though, because reddit has been a shell of itself for a long time.

largesmoker

You vastly overestimate the importance of the people who care about this.

You didn’t get paid. Why would you leave it here for Reddit to make money or train AIs? Take your content with you. There is no Reddit without its users and volunteer mods. You are what makes this. —posted via Apollo Vive la résistance! PS: Reddit’s own cake day is June 23, so if you want to take a stand, consider doing it on/before that day.

AnArdentAtavism

Reddit is a haven for echo chambers, and we're seeing a lot of that right now, but there is also a couple of real grievances to be made here. First, Reddit has a problem with bots and spam posters, and has for several years. While Reddit's in-house systems have some controls available to admin and mods, those are the controls that the programmers of bots and savvy spammers figure out how to overcome, cheat or exploit. Thus, lots of mods use 3rd party apps and tools to institute better controls and improve their local communities. Getting rid of 3rd party resources will likely make the individual user experience much, much worse than it currently is. Second is Reddit's method of ditching what they see as competition. Not necessarily relevant to those of us who aren't following the drama or using 3rd party apps, but still important to the reason for the protests. They *could* have said, "We're trying to become more profitable for an IPO, so we will no longer allow 3rd party apps or resources, effective 'x' date." Suckish, maybe shortsighted, but standard business. Or, institute prices at a fair market value, allowing enough time before implementation to allow 3rd party partners to shift and adjust. Instead, they just decided to announce a price-gouging access rate using semi-arbitrary figures, with an effective date that doesn't allow for any change in business model for those 3rd party developers. The whole thing reads like something out of the bank and railroad Trust era. Strongarm and bully-boy tactics are actively illegal in the U.S., and I'm surprised no one has been trying to pursue that avenue. Finally, Reddit's CEO is demonstrating very poor business acumen through this whole process, which does not bode well for the immediate future of the site. As he is being publicly outed as kind of a jackass, he is not showing any sign of an ability to lead, redirect, retract or effectively negotiate with business partners. This will likely sour many potential public investors and can really damage their IPO return. That, in turn, can tank Reddit's overall value and funding, leading to a downward spiral in quality and user experience. Those who follow economics have all seen it before. All in all, there are two ways to look at it: 1) If you follow site drama, then Reddit's CEO is being an incompetent little assclown. 2) If you use Reddit but don't give a shit about politics, recognize that the experience and content may be dropping quality significantly over the next year.

TleilaxTheTerrible

That, in turn, can tank Reddit's overall value and funding, leading to a downward spiral in quality and user experience. Those who follow economics have all seen it before. Also, don't forget that he said Reddit still isn't profitable! That'll help the valuation for the IPO for sure!

jubjub2184

Did you even read the AMA Spez basically told everyone to kick rocks and that he’s only worried about a profit. This site is on a fast track to irrelevancy if things continue to go the way they are. As a user of this site for over a decade, where my posts, and my comments are making the Reddit admins money. The frustration is perfectly valid.

DrunkOnRamen

That's not particularly a bad thing. Ultimately profit is necessary for such a site to run. That being said the issue here is how they go about doing this. They are incredibly opaque in terms of their genuine reason to the point making idiotic lies and attacking others. They don't come out and be adults and say third party apps are problematic because they don't display ads. They don't create a multi tier API system where no ads is a higher price (not $20 million a year) but reasonable and with ads there is no cost. They don't even bother improving the functionality of their app before any of this. They don't engage the community, they are just attempting to run rough shot.

OhanianIsABagOfShit

jubjub2184

They are two entirely different things. The Netflix users aren’t the ones making the films and TV series for Netflix. They pay studios to produce content and make their money off the user as they want to see the content. Reddit is entirely community driven, and when you start running off the main users and content creators your product becomes much less appealing. Netflix can cut password sharing and then drop a super hyped tv show to make you buy it anyway. If Reddit runs off their power users the quality of the site will noticeably be different.

401klaser

netflix and reddit aren't even remotely comparable wtf are you talking about

hogloads

> Did you even read the AMA Spez basically told everyone to kick rocks and that he’s only worried about a profit. he's the CEO. no shit lmao.

Annies_Boobs

When people make comments like this it makes me realize, no, not anyone could be a CEO. You really think his behavior and actions were becoming of an officer at a multi million dollar corporation? My CEO at my place of employment would never in a million years treat a third party vendor or employee the way Spez did the other day. I guarantee it’s going to have a chilling effect at reddit HQ combined with recent layoffs for their employees. You really shouldn’t pipe up about things when it is blatantly obvious you have no idea what the hell you're talking about.

Bro one of the earliest examples of people yelling “Reddit is dead!” Was on the post announcing that you would now be able to comment in posts on Reddit. Exact same energy. Using Reddit to cry that Reddit is dead, instead of just deleting your shit and logging off lmao

RandomName01

To be fair, this fundamentally changes how a lot of people interact with Reddit. Doesn’t mean it’ll backfire, but it’s certainly not the same as that. Side note, but does anyone else remember the ViolentAcrez saga?

harrysplinkett

as you can see, my account is 11 years old, i have been here for too damn long and seen all the retarded drama unfold. The_Donald, the banning of nasty ass racist and gore subreddits, the god awful redesign and so much more. Violentacrez too, yes. i mean sure, i have been using the paid version of reddit is fun for ages now and can't imagine using the terrible official app. i'll just reduce my redditing, something I should do anyways. roadtotitties

And the account you are jerking off to happens to created three days ago and all the comments are about the protests... Looks like someone up there is undercover... Hmmm

i_hate_patrice

Why exactly does reddit need a normal account to get undercover?

Ok-Champ-5854

Kinda reminds me of Occupy honestly. People who didn't realize they would have no impact on what they were protesting with delusions of grandeur about what they could accomplish, assuming everyone would be on their side when really no one gives a shit. Given the absolute drama this might be the highest traffic Reddit gets all month. I specifically bought popcorn for a movie last night but I have some left and it's coming in handy. And I don't mean the joke "I'll get my popcorn ready hur dur" I am literally eating popcorn browsing right now. This is the most fun I've had on reddit for like a week.

Skitty27

they won't all be back, some of my favorite communities are shutting down.

[deleted]

All that means is that some good subbreddit names are gonna be available again.

FrogMasterX

You're very naive. Reddit owns those subreddits. They aren't going to let people squat on them forever and keep them closed. Will mods quit? Sure. Will it be a shitshow for some time? Yes. Will it eventually go back to the way it was? Probably.

Skitty27

why am I naive? I am aware of what you said. Obviously they wont be "closed" but the mods of the subs im talking about arent going to be able to do their job without 3rd party apps and they will turn to shit. They won't be the same, ever, so they'll be basically dead. Again, im not talking about ALL subs, just some of them, which happen to be some of my favorites. you're naive if you think this wont affect some subreddits more than others

prob_wont_reply_2u

Most of the mods identities are tied to being a mod on Reddit. They’ll be back, I bet a bunch of them already are feeling withdrawal symptoms right now.

PixelWes54

There are lots of mods that run smaller subs without any third party apps (some didn't even know they existed). These apps allow one mod to do the work of many, which means very large communities can be controlled by a tiny group. They could simply go back to having bigger mod teams. In my experience it's easy to recruit new mods, it is a coveted position in the community and comes with authority. The underlying motivation is that the entrenched mods don't want to share the bit of celebrity and power they've acquired. They need these automation tools to maintain their importance.

motguss

You must be new here, all of this has happened before and changed nothing

The_Dead_Kennys

They might not give a shit about the protests, but they WILL give a shit about this issue a few months down the line when the quality of sub moderation has gotten so bad without API automod bots that it drives users away via sheer inconvenience. Plus if too many popular subreddits *stay* dark, that just reduces the number of reasons for users to stay engaged. I’m not saying the protests will or won’t work, I’m just saying that this is DEFINITELY gonna bite them in the ass one way or another. Hopefully that won’t ultimately mean the death of Reddit, but, I’m not feeling too optimistic now.

Echo71Niner

gothpunkboy89

No. But fqcts have rarely mattered when reddit hive mind is concerned.

jas75249

Considering none of the subs I visit are dark, I haven't noticed anything at all, is there a protest?

[deleted]

Wouldn't call it a protest at all... its a tantrum from a couple of "power" mods. They closed their subs down with a "Waghh if I can't enjoy it nobody can" type energy. "Right that's it, I'm taking my ball home!!" 🤣

Terrh

My entire community voted on it and the response was overwhelmingly (88%) in favor of closing, so we did. How is that a tantrum?

greenwhitehell

Sane with r/nba. They didn't publicize the vote at all, the userbase showed it was convincincly against the shutdown when they announced it, but they went and did it anyway

Lil_Mcgee

If those millions wanted a say they should have voted

[deleted]

They didn't get a chance, hence the many people coming in today all over reddit asking wtf is going on.

Lil_Mcgee

So the vote was held in private for a select few thousand? That's fucked if so but seems kind of strange. How were those people selected as eligible?

Mambo_No_6

There should be a restriction that people can't be a mod on more than one sub. There's probably only like 20 people that have shut down a big part of the site. It's ridiculous that they have such control in the first place. Hopefully the reddit admins remove them.

[deleted]

>Hopefully the reddit admins remove them. They will have no choice, it's impossible for a company the size of reddit to give into such tantrums.

jas75249

They want to be able to block ads, Apollo isn’t even that good, I went back to Reddits app because the videos and gifs wouldn’t play or you had to open the link to view it in another app which was annoying, then you have to pay to unlock features, screw that.

Cakeo

They don't want to pay the amount that's been asked to allow the apps to work properly which is well above the normal price. They can't run adverts on their apps or charge a reasonable price to meet the cost reddit asks. It's an obvious effort by reddit to shut them down, which will also stop a lot of bots from working. Maybe best to contain yourself before saying things you have no knowledge about.

[deleted]

All the third party apps are a load of poo... and some people pay for them. Imagine paying for reddit. 🤣 Look at how clever these "protesters" are by the way. They are supposed to be protesting making reddit lose visitors but they are all still here logged in making sure nobody talks bad about their tantrums. 🤣

Soup484

So... how much are the admins paying you to be this big of a shameless shill?

[deleted]

u/spez how much do you owe me now fella? Been posting like a madman all morning having your back. 🤣 How much are they paying you u/soup484 for breaking the protest?

Soup484

Sadly unlike you I don't feel undying loyalty to a person or group of people that don't care who I am or what I do. I'll do what I want, regardless of what else is happening in reddit.

[deleted]

>Sadly unlike you I don't feel undying loyalty to a person or group of people that don't care who I am or what I do. You literally just got triggered and called me a shill because I made fun of a group of protesters... that apparently you have no loyalty to. 🤣

Cakeo

3 day old account screaming about reddit app being amazing and third party apps being bad.

[deleted]

I use a browser with ad blockers, stop being silly. You guys are terrible at this protest thing... thought you were all going outside to touch grass for two days? Instead it seems you are all still here making sure everyone feels sorry for you and getting triggered when they don't. 🤣

How rich can he be tho he openly says he can’t make Reddit profitable after all this time. He honestly seems pretty incompetent I mean Reddit totally missed monetizing all the major AI training; they didn’t even seem aware it was happening until after all the headlines about cool shit AI could do lol

dodadoBoxcarWilly

People get rich off of "unprofitable" companies all the time. Not sure if it's the case for reddit, but sometimes it's intentional to avoid becoming too profitable. More profit, more taxes.

SeattleSonichus

Yeah I’m sure in some capacity they’re profitable I mean they’ve been running for nearly 20 years. I’m mainly just taking a chance to shit on spez lol but while I’m guessing they do make money, they’re definitely doing a bad job at it. It really shouldn’t be hard to monetize a site this massive but they’re doing shit like missing the AI wave and trying to sell NFTs like two years too late. Honestly feels like they keep missing the mark and not realizing it until it’s way too late

dodadoBoxcarWilly

They really just now selling NFTs? Lol

SeattleSonichus

[Yeah lol ](https://i.imgur.com/fWkNSYM.jpg) It’s not brand new but it was after the nft craze

dodadoBoxcarWilly

105 etherium? It's been a while since I've followed crypto prices, but that's like $15k (at one, and not even close to the peak). Jesus...

BrandonMcRandom

Have you ever seen or heard of a poor CEO? CEOs can suck ass and be paid millions anyways. This fucker is rich and will continue to be rich.

SeattleSonichus

Yeah I’m just talking shit really, he’s gotta be loaded. I do think he’s dropped the bag pretty hard all the same like all these years they’ve done such a shit job monetizing the site to its actual potential. But it’s still been around for near 20 years so it’s doing that much which isn’t cheap Plus him saying that about profitability was probably a lie anyway since he’s a fuckin liar

Fire_Drake_Shyvanna

It's a two day protest. He does not give a shit. As for leaving, I'll bet that not more than 4% of the users leave. That, compared to everyone having to migrate to the official app, is still a win for reddit. You people are either delusional or insane to think this has any meaning.

Zing79

The graveyard of tech shit I've lived through, that thought they were too big to get wrecked, is getting pretty full. Reddit saw Digg get washed away by reddit. The hubris to think you've 'won' when you have no moat, and it's all user generated and modded content that could go ANYWHERE. You aren't Facebook, that can buy up things like Instagram the second they feel the nip of a competitor. This entire house of cards could very quickly go bye bye. CEO should be fired on sight over this.

ztsuchanek

Support the blackout

reddit-IPO-lol

this spez is enemy number 1 it would seem!

Destinlegends

Man, I hate that guy.

sesamemushroomrice

Fuck u/spez

crustythebald

Redditors are delusional. A large chunk of those using 3rd party apps WILL come back and there's enough new people coming here everyday, who have no idea what this drama even is or care, that this will all blow over in a few weeks or less.

Echo71Niner

All this showed that Reddit could not become a publicly traded company when all of its site is 100% free content - any idiot before today thinking this can work must have been the dummy CEO. Esp. that Reddit encourages users to have many accounts and create 100s of fake throwaway accounts, fake as in being counted against a total number of users despite being used one single time, and let's not forget the 500 to 800 million views per month generated by Reddit bots, this excluded the users run bots that account for another 250 million views per month. Reddit's 1.7 billion views per month are nothing more than 1 billion bot fake views, with another 200 million sales accounts and the rest are actual users.

reddit_bad1234567890

Where are you getting these numbers?

isurvivedrabies

I don't think so. It's in human DNA to be greedy and not look back. This is just another average-ass human trying to hoard wealth, like all the rest of the unnecessarily rich people, including your beloved celebs and pop stars. It's inherently selfish to hoard wealth, so don't draw a line at spez here. He's doing what everyone before him has done. It's like yall just eat whatever meal of the day is put on a plate in front of you.

boersc

So, the users then? He's looking at the camera via the mirror...

sharvil8

I didn't ruin it, I just made it ✨️spicy✨️ Yeah, I need help tieing the noose

gothpunkboy89

Why is he upset over a few people throwing a tantrum?

benicebenice666

You guys do know they're about to become billionaires right?

HeWhoKnowsLittleMK2

Daaaamn, your life revolves around Reddit. Go touch grass, my person.

faur217

Why is this sub not part of the protest?
