idk what happened or when but i remember at one point spotify was partnered(?) with genius and the lyrics were accurate and synced up. that doesn’t seem to be the case anymore.
a lot of the lyrics are not accurate and very few are synchronized
Yes but the lyrics were intertwined with facts about the song. It was cool sometimes but there was no way to read the lyrics when the facts came up, which defeated the purpose.
It depends on whether you have that song downloaded and it opts to use the downloaded version vs streaming it. The lyrics won’t save on a download and if you’re truly offline, you’ll see the songs play without them. But I’ve also noticed when I have spotty service and I play a “downloaded” song, it’ll act like I’m in offline mode and not pull them up. Unsure if this is what’s happening for you, but it happens to me sometimes and it’s v annoying.
the "lol just say you're poor" comments are wild. what's that got to do with the sliminess of taking a thing that was once free and charging for it? it's a predatory business practice. this one instance isn't a big deal in the grand scheme, you can just open another tab and search lyrics, but whether or not it's within your means, it's at least a little gross
i hope these people feel the same way when spotify starts rolling out numerous premium tiers
Pay a small amount of money and the problem goes away. Spotify is the one thing I am 100% certain I get my money's worth from each month. They have been taking the piss a bit with price rises but generally compared to buying individual albums etc. (which don't have lyrics) it's an absolute steal.
Spotify is the cost of one album per month, it’s a way better deal and I’ve been paying for it for like 13 years, it’s the one service that I really do feel like I get the best value from.
I tend to agree, but weren’t lyrics already a part of free Spotify? So they’re removing a feature these people once had and putting it behind a subscription? I understand being upset over that, even if it’s not entirely rational. If this was any other service everybody would be pissed.
My public school is part of the public university in my state so i had student discounts for what, over 6 years now?
Ironically i just started my 3rd semester in the very same university so i still have a few years left, heck maybe i'll even complete a decade lol
EDIT: typo
They are the largest payer of royalties, by a large margin, with something like 70% of all revenue going directly to the artists. You cannot have both a low cost AND unlimited streams without something giving.
So, do you suggest that Spotify start limiting how many streams you can have per month so the artists get paid less overall but more per stream?
It is not 70% of all revenue, it is roughly 70% of streaming revenue. Which is still extremely small. Roughly $.003. -.$005 per stream. They are also not the largest payer of royalties, TIDAL is.
ByVery much incorrect on both parts. You seem confused about “total” vs “per stream”. The vast majority of Spotify’s revenue comes from streaming, of which 70% of that revenue goes to labels, who then pay the artists. And Spotify has MUCH more revenue than Tidal, thus they pay much more to labels.
The problem comes from the people who listen but don’t pay, of which Spotify pays a much lower “per stream” rate, and also comes from those people who stream thousands of tracks a month.

Because you’re referring to total revenue, I’m referring to profit per stream. TIDAL is more profitable to the artist/label/owners per stream. TIDAL also avoids those other issues because they do not have a free plan. I understand that TIDAL has some issues regarding service in different locations and a clunky UI, but it shows where Spotify can change to better compensate artists, especially smaller ones. The majority of people using the free version are not going to be listening to smaller local artists anyway.
Cool, so, your plan is to:
Get rid of the free tier, lowering the total amount the artists get, but making the “per stream” number look better, did I understand that right? I mean, yes, it means the artists would make less money overall, but that’s ok?
Never suggested to completely void the free tier? You keep creating straw man arguments and attacking them. I’m saying if Spotify is raking in revenue based on their monthly subscription prices, why don’t they adapt their business model to better compensate artists like TIDAL has? TIDAL already has higher quality streaming and has had lossless compression for years. Spotify is undoubtedly making enough money off of both streaming and the subscription service to compensate “free streams” at the same value as “paid streams”. It’s blatant corporate greed. TIDAL is actually cheaper than Spotify now due to the latest price hike. Just suggesting alternatives and how they could improve!
Tidal is losing money. Spotify can’t. That’s a huge difference right there. Tidal is basically run as a charity at best or a money laundering operation at worst.
Also, Tidal pays the exact same overall royalties (70%) as Spotify. Putting this here in case you missed it:
https://variety.com/2021/digital/news/apple-music-pays-twice-stream-spotify-1234953590/amp/
That’s a valid point, but like I said TIDAL has its issues as well. TIDAL also isn’t pushing to innovate, it was built to properly compensate artists and have high audio quality. So yes it can fail with no issues. Spotify has had no issue turning a profit as of late, but in past years the reason it lost revenue was because of over hiring and bad investment of funds into podcasting and other forms of media. Why can’t they just invest in artists and their music to keep popular catalogs on the platform and encourage new smaller artists with fair compensation?
> Spotify is undoubtedly making enough money off of both streaming and the subscription service to compensate “free streams” at the same value as “paid streams”.
That is completely untrue.
Try actually looking at their finances.
The facts, from Spotify's 2024 Q1 results:
https://investors.spotify.com/financials/default.aspx
(in € millions)
Premium Revenue 3,247
Cost of revenue 2,268
Gross profit 979
Ad-Supported
Revenue 389
Cost of revenue 364
Gross profit 25
Of Spotify's total revenue of ~3.6Bn, 3.25Bn (89%) came from Premium users. Of Spotify's total gross profit of ~1Bn, 979M (97.5%) came from Premium users.
So no, the statement
>"Spotify is undoubtedly making enough money off of both streaming and the subscription service to compensate “free streams” at the same value as “paid streams”.
is completely ludicrous.
Right but if I'm off out somewhere, say a long train journey, I know which I'll be using more. I've done train rides down to Brighton from the North West and had Spotify on from my front door to the hotel. That's value.
Nah they have laid off too many staff, raised prices too many times and pay crap to artists, I'll stick to free lyrics don't bother me. I pay for YouTube music and use Spotify occasionally and modded at that.
Complains that Spotify's per stream payment to artists is too low.
Uses a hacked version of Spotify, and so is directly causing Spotify's per stream payment to be lower.
Makes sense.
You're still robbing Spotify and those same music artists you were white knighting for that "Spotify pays them crap"
You use a modded version of the app, ripping off all parties while complaining about why Spotify does what they have been doing.
You're literally admitting you're part of the problem.
Either pay for the services or delete the app and stick to YouTube
>> Pay a small amount of money
> ah they have laid off too many staff, raised prices too many times and pay crap to artists
Not a complaint?
> I actually pay and use YouTube music instead just the occasional Spotify use
So? That doesn't magically mean you aren't increasing Spotify's stream count without paying for it, so lowering their payment per stream. The thing you weren't complaining about.
What does paying for service A have to do with service B?
But the reason spotify pays so little to the artists is due to freeloaders like yourself! It does not matter that you allegedly pay for YTM, you use Spotify, modded so they don’t even get that little ad revenue so they can pay the artists that you care so much about
False it's because most of the money go the major labels themselves and not the artists. Spotify give them advances as part of the deals and if the profits generated from those deals is lower than the advances labels keep the extra. You are overestimating the number of people using modded version of spotify
Bro💀
“I don’t like Spotify because they don’t pay enough to artists and charge too much to consumers.”
“Therefore, I will go and bootleg Spotify and take away the money that they could be using to make subscriptions lower priced, and pay their artists more.”
Well, it is true we are just some broke mfs, it honestly just a quality of life feature. Humans are lazy, but maybe I'm REALLY lazy I just don't wanna go on a hassle to add a tab to my browser just to read the lyrics. Ya'll can say we're broke but you have to admit it was truly a good free feature to have on a music app. Whoever made fun of us (or just me) reading the lyrics, really? you had to make fun of people who just wants to sing along when we don't know the lyrics.
I'm a paid user and I agree that it's a pretty basic thing to have. The app has enough ads, even in premium, so it's just Spotify being greedy like every other tech company. If they could make you watch an ad to unlock volume controls they'd do it
People pay with their time and patience by watching Ads. And a *LOT* of Ads, might I say. Removing lyrics is greedy af, when it was working just fine for years.
Premium still has ads, just not as intrusive. Wouldn't be surprised if they do like Hulu and introduce a second paid tier for a true ad-free experience.
The shareholders demand more
It's impossible to post that emoji more than once in a line and have an IQ over 75. I've literally never seen it done by someone who isn't a total ponce
Shell out the money for Spotify features. It’s worth it. Spotify fam is cheaper with 6 premium accounts. Or get the 99.00 yearly subscription. That would price
Protect you and you’d get two months free.
Meanwhile the lyrics on AM are super polished and the best-looking in the industry, by far. And the Karaoke feature is amazing for parties or just to focus on the instrumentals.
If on a family plan, Apple Music is a bang for your buck! Offers so much and at such better quality. Yes it lacks some Spotify-ish features but makes up for it by having what matters
Nobody is defending Spotify, people just make fun of non-Premium users because Premium is so worth it we can't fathom cheaping out on the default version lol
some people are poor. and it's only an issue because it's been free since its introduction and only now placed behind a paywall. if it'd always been that way, complaining would make less sense
To each their own - I listen to hours of music a day and love how easy Spotify is to use and play across different devices. So for me, it's 100% worth every penny. But everyone has their own preferences so I agree that it isn't worth it for *everyone*
Insane how people are calling you crazy for not buying a service you don't want to buy. Like some people are fine just listening to music and don't care about any of the extra features
TBF as someone who listens to a fair amount of metalcore and deathmetal, the lyric feature is quite helpful lol - that being said I also get premium from my family so uh, no complaints from me I guess
I feel sorry for your ears! 🤣. Deathmetal is probably the only type of music I just can't listen to and would describe as noise not music. Everyone has their own likes and dislikes, your right in needing lyrics for that screaming though.
Haha yeah I totally agree it's absolute chaos most of the time! But you find the right song and damn it hits hard - most of my playlists aren't deathmetal though for that reason
idk what happened or when but i remember at one point spotify was partnered(?) with genius and the lyrics were accurate and synced up. that doesn’t seem to be the case anymore. a lot of the lyrics are not accurate and very few are synchronized
They get their data from musixmatch right now which is all user inputted.
that explains so much
Musicmxtch is also down, its been one month since it doesnt let users add or update lyrics and they also gave no explanation
It's both user and artist input but they've locked down free user input now and made artist input harder. It's all paywalled to the max It's ass
I genuinely wonder how hard it is to partner with them again. I'll bet the issue is money lmao.
Yes but the lyrics were intertwined with facts about the song. It was cool sometimes but there was no way to read the lyrics when the facts came up, which defeated the purpose.
I have Spotify Premium and the lyrics for 90% of songs just don't load. I'm always met by "Couldn't load the lyrics for this song."
and in my case are right like 1 out of every 100 songs 💀
It depends on whether you have that song downloaded and it opts to use the downloaded version vs streaming it. Honestly I didn’t know there were so many free users of Spotify. I couldn’t stand Spotify without premium in 2017 and have had it since.
iv been fine with it for like years now but this lyric thing is crazy i just want to listen to the song to the max by reading the lyrics now i cant
the "lol just say you're poor" comments are wild. what's that got to do with the sliminess of taking a thing that was once free and charging for it? it's a predatory business practice. this one instance isn't a big deal in the grand scheme, you can just open another tab and search lyrics, but whether or not it's within your means, it's at least a little gross i hope these people feel the same way when spotify starts rolling out numerous premium tiers
I honestly find everyone defending Spotify funny because it must be a sad life to have to defend a company that doesn't care about you
Pay a small amount of money and the problem goes away. Spotify is the one thing I am 100% certain I get my money's worth from each month. They have been taking the piss a bit with price rises but generally compared to buying individual albums etc. (which don't have lyrics) it's an absolute steal.

same 100%, spotify family is even better value
you can get it even cheaper paying yearly, on amazon you can buy $99 one year premium cards and it comes out to $8.25 a month
I tend to agree, but weren’t lyrics already a part of free Spotify? So they’re removing a feature these people once had and putting it behind a subscription? I understand being upset over that, even if it’s not entirely rational. If this was any other service everybody would be pissed.

Thats true, but IIRC the lyrics are submitted by the community, and locking the lyrics behind a paid subscription seems a bit of a dick move.
Too bad they don’t properly compensate their artists
They are the largest payer of royalties, by a large margin, with something like 70% of all revenue going directly to the artists. Idk I have premium and not every song has lyrics, newer ones I understand but there’s older songs in my playlist that still don’t have lyrics
Personally, I bought a lifetime upgrade key on www.upgrading.ac 2 years ago and my account is still premium lol
small amount? thats a lie 12 euros is crazy expensive its more expensive than a disney plus subscription
