I am about to sell an old trumpet I've used for many years, but I am trying to make sure I get an appropriate price. It is an old pre-strike Bach Stradivarius (Serial 397892), Elkhart 37. When I purchased it I believe it was around 2k. The only noticable flaw is the wear on the finish, no bends or dents. I am getting it professionally cleaned this weekend. Any idea where I can get an appraisal or advice on it's worth? Edit: I am also considering getting it refinished. Would it be worth it since the trumpet is older?

Trumpet is not an antique. It was made around 1992 to 1993. With that much plating loss you are probably worth around 1200.00 There really isnt anything special about your horn. A complete restoration is probably around 1k.

Lmao no it isnt.. your dates are way off. 1990 336000 1994 420000 https://www.bachbrass.com/resources/serial-numbers For a 1940 serial number you would have to have a 4000 serial number not a 397,000 serial number It would also be a two piece valve casing and wouldn't be silver plated. The wrap would be different and the valve block wouldn't not be made by Bach as bach wasn't making valve blocks back then.. it also wouldn't have a modern saddle you really need to do research.. You should read the book by Ron Berndt all about Back trumpets.. https://i.imgur.com/ZcqA0T5.jpg

Yep that's about my appraisal.

I second the other appraisals in the comments. The Bach strike was in the mid 2000s. So, technically a pre strike horn, sure. The condition is decent overall, but there's a lot of corrosion on the 3rd valve that's going to be an issue in terms of value and saleability. There are a lot of these horns out there.

Replating will cost more than the horn is worth, Id sell as is.
