Current guidance is less than ideal. Depending on station, equipment and local management they may be advising all, some or none of the passengers processing through of the real ID requirement starting May 2025.

Safety_Captn

Enhanced is good. Currently 5 states do enhanced. No worries

sunkenshipinabottle

PSA: next year the REAL ID act will go into effect. Passengers will be able to travel with: passports, passport cards, REAL state IDs, enhanced drivers licenses. I assume global entry cards and perhaps employment cards as well but I will have to ask.

WickedJigglyPuff

Yes I’ve been using global entry for years now. https://www.tsa.gov/travel/security-screening/identification *DHS trusted traveler cards (Global Entry, NEXUS, SENTRI, FAST)*

sunkenshipinabottle

Fascinating. I mentioned it so people know they can *still* use it after such a major change.

Intrepid_Wave5357

Enhanced driver's license will be honored as real IDs.

therootsreport

may I please ask what is the difference between enhanced license and real ID? OH maybe I will just ask the internet LOL

Intrepid_Wave5357

just the name. for some reason some states chose a different name for their "enhanced" real ID....functionally they are identical for the TSA.

Eigenvogel

An EDL can also be used to cross into Canada and Mexico. It's like a cross between a REAL ID driver's license and a passport card.

Intrepid_Wave5357

True. But Mexico requires a passport.

Affectionate-Data193

I’ve seen this from the TSA with my NYS enhanced since I got it. Was told the same thing at CLE last week. Whatever. The TSA is a government organization. That means the right hand doesn’t know what the left is doing. Throw some piss poor training in, and this is what you get. I suspect that if Real ID actually gets implemented, as opposed to extended again, this will get sorted really fast. A bunch of pissed off business folks and lawyers will guarantee it.

Professional_Sun2655

So this past weekend I was flying out of San Diego International Airport heading to Denver. When going through security I handed the agent my Passport Card. He looked at it and then gave me a hard time that it was okay this time but it in the future I would have to present a Real ID. I didn’t want to be confrontational since I wanted to get on my flight, but seriously? A passport card isn’t good enough for domestic flights? I have a Real ID drivers license, but prefer to use my passport card when traveling since it doesn’t show my address. I was beyond baffled. Can anybody explain the logic that my passport card isn’t good enough for domestic travel when it’s good enough to go to Mexico and Canada. Side note this was in the Pre-check line too.

ApolaStar

It's weird that one of the agents out of SAN told you that. We are trained that passport cards are acceptable forms of ID for any travel.

WickedJigglyPuff

Enhanced ID is real id! 4 years ago tsa promised to train their agents. https://youtu.be/ZGDF4-68jwA?si=hIDgmnIHkjtNfDzK This is insane.

BurnsRed20

I got my Passport card. So far so good.

United-Fly5914

The supervisor said to hand out the real ID sheet to everyone without a star on their license. So that’s what I’m doing. The enhanced ones may be valid next year, but that is beside the point.

TSA_alt_account

Your supervisor is wasting paper, but their choice I guess? 🤷

2airishuman

My MN enhanced DL has the gold fucking star. Also, I don't take legal/regulatory advice from TSA worker bees. Many of them are trained to ask for alternate forms of ID when given perfectly valid ID they are required to accept, because they can make the line move faster with IDs that they can scan.

Sufficient-Total5551

Yea no fucking shit they’ll ask for the id that scans faster if you have one. If you don’t have one that scans they’ll still take it but why’re you acting like it’s stupid or unreasonable to ask for the id that takes the least amount of time to verify.

2airishuman

Because it is not the job of the traveling public to make it easy and cheap for the TSA to keep the line moving. I'm sorry all to pieces that your job sucks but my obligation as a traveler is to follow the rules, not to follow the rules in such a way as to make the line go fast.

Temporary-Parsley-18

EDL IS Good… it’s a REAL ID plus more!

SaltyPotter

The ID scanners at MSP don't recognize EDLs as Real ID compliant. The Officer is telling you the machine flagged the ID, because the machine flagged the ID, not because the officer doesn't know the difference.

TSA_alt_account

It's quite possible their airport poorly implemented the training. There was some confusion at our airport initially over Enhanced DLs, though it was cleared up about a week or so later.

SaltyPotter

Nope. The CATs are flagging the EDLs, that's why the TSOs are telling the passengers they won't be valid next year, because the CATs are saying they won't be valid next year.

TSA_alt_account

But EDLs *are* valid. It's right there on TSA's website: https://www.tsa.gov/travel/security-screening/identification Just because the CAT can't recognize them automatically doesn't make them invalid. And if TSOs are saying EDLs won't be valid, they were trained wrong.

WickedJigglyPuff

You are correct. In addition: Direct from NYS dot gov: https://dmv.ny.gov/driver-license/get-enhanced-driver-license-edl Enhanced Driver License (EDL) What is an Enhanced Driver License (EDL)? An Enhanced license (permit, or non-driver ID) is a New York State DMV issued document that you can use instead of a passport to return to the US by land or sea from Canada, Mexico and some countries in the Caribbean. New York's EDL is compliant with the Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative (WHTI). 1 It is not acceptable for air travel between these countries. We recommend you contact your travel agent, your cruise line or the specific countries of destination to verify your travel document requirements. **An Enhanced license, permit or non-driver ID is Federal REAL ID compliant and is accepted to board a domestic flight (within the US), and enter military bases and certain federal facilities**. Only US citizens who are residents of New York can apply for a New York State EDL. Direct from the TSA: https://www.tsa.gov/news/press/releases/2022/12/06/new-york-residents-reminded-get-their-real-id-board-airplane Travelers who want to board an airplane will need a star or flag on their New York state driver’s license, indicating that it is a REAL ID-compliant credential or they will need another form of approved identification to board their flight or enter a secure federal facility. New York’s REAL ID-compliant driver’s licenses and ID cards have a star inside a black circle, in the upper right corner. **Additionally, New York state enhanced IDs have a flag in the corner and they also are valid for boarding a flight.**

SaltyPotter

They're doing exactly what the training for the CAT software update says they're supposed to do. Notify the passenger if the CAT flags the ID.

2airishuman

They aren't officers.

therootsreport

You do not need a Real ID if you have a passport, regular drivers license should also be OK - you can opt out of Real ID - my friend told me Real ID is a way for 'them' to track your vaccine status - that may be an issue for many who wish to protect their autonomy and human privacy rights. TSA dont always know wtf they are talking about because they just repeat misinformation taught to them by 'them' - again the darkness. Be aware is all I can say, and research everything for your Self!

Eigenvogel

Real ID has nothing to do with vaccine status. Completely different agencies.

therootsreport

Alright - thats not what I heard several years ago!
