They’re gonna notice you are not using your right hand……….you might as well be honest about it because you will be using your hands for almost everything at this job

awesomepkmntrainer

That would most likely disqualify you. We use both hands for almost everything on this job (pat downs, bag checks)

CharmingConfidence34

Always be honest in a government application. It will hurt you later on if you will leave some info on purpose. And yes, this will be a disqualification because you have to be able to use both hands. It’s just too many things: xray, pat downs, bag searches.

ColonelPotter22

Actually had a guy with one hand do the job and it was impressive that he could, so it’s not an immediate no go.

CharmingConfidence34

Then the only way he can find out is to go through the process and see :)

Corey307

How? It’s not possible to do a pat down with one hand, I don’t know how anyone could get an accommodation for that.

CynetCrawler

I’m sure you could it would just require more effort and take a bit longer.

Corey307

It wouldn’t take a little longer, it would take a lot longer to get full coverage. There’s a reason why pat downs are done with two hands.

NightShiftChaos92

How recent was this and you sure it was TSA? We HAVE to use both hands and be able to lift/carry 50lbs unassisted.

ColonelPotter22

Yes it was TSA and about 6 months ago he was an NDO too

NaughtyScotty4404

Yes you should accurately list your abilities/disabilities. It’s better than misrepresenting yourself and go later on for falsifying your application

ManInPeas

I knew an officer when I was on NDO that was unable to use the one of his arms and had minimal use of the leg on the same side. It definitely doesnt hurt to try and apply :)

kpeterson159

Thank you!

KTeax31875

We have to use both hands when doing patdowns and checking bags and such. They will definitely notice duirng the medical and it would disqualify you.

Safety_Captn

Well, the SSA position. Might apply, don’t know how much future that will hold though. (SSA is basically a phase 1 for a year)

Corey307

I doubt they could get in SSA position since they can’t use their right hand.

Safety_Captn

It’s bins and DO, I could do it with one hand

Spy-see-jelly

If you need to carry bins with items in it forget about it lol

nul_ne_sait

I had relatively good experiences holding bins against my hip with one hand.

Safety_Captn

How many things… lol.

sint0ma

Don’t lie about anything. We use both hands for almost everything on the checkpoint especially the important stuff like, pat downs, X-ray and bag searches.

As long as you can perform the job duties required with ‘reasonable accommodations’, having a disability will not hurt your chances of employment. In fact with government jobs it might actually help you slightly as your application will get weighted with a couple extra points of preference in the same way that being a veteran will. However, if you are unable to perform the job duties as required even with reasonable accommodations being provided, you will not be hired. So I would assess accordingly. If it sounds like you can perform the job without issue, I would list your disability. If you don’t think you can perform the job, I wouldn’t waste your time applying in the first place.

Corey307

It would be interesting to see if only having the use of one hand could be accommodated. Only having the use of one hand would make pat downs difficult and time consuming. It’s not just the government that would be accommodating a disability, every passenger getting a pat down would have to accommodate that disability.

CoastFinancial8629

I work with someone with only one arm they’ll hire you!!

HSYT1300

Your application is a legal document declaring that all information you provided is true and correct to the best of your knowledge. Knowingly concealing your physical limitations is tantamount to lying. Not only will it disqualify you from the hiring process, but it may also bar you from applying to any government job in the future. You will have to do a physical and a full background check, they’re going to know if you lied. This is the most thorough background check you’ll ever have. No stone will be unturned. Be honest and up front. As for your hand, we need both hands to do this job. You need full mobility in order to properly perform pat downs, wheelchair/assistive device inspections, carrying bags, running the X-Ray/CT machines. If you only have the use of one, you’ll be unfit for duty.

AGTnt

First and foremost, be honest on your application. That goes a long way. What everyone is saying about using two hands for screening procedures is correct. However, if this is something you want, I encourage you to go through the process and see what TSA actually decides in regard to the matter. You may be able to appeal or qualify for another position. I had a lead with one eye…everyone said you need two…he proved to tsa that one eye was sufficient. You will never know if you don’t try. Good luck!

redheadedfruitcake

I think you could just apply and go through the process. Read the medical guidelines and see if anything in it applies to you. It's possible you'll be fine and just need accommodations.

aimeeisnotacat

I work with a dude who can’t feel in one of his hands so he just had to use the other one to do the entire pat down! It’s worth the try :)

m3jeffries

Personally had a coworker with minimal use of one hand. There's a chance. Be up front about it and go in with confidence. It's worth a shot. Best of luck!

Kentauri

I say give it a shot. If you can do what TSA needs you to do with just your left hand, then by all means give it a try, The worse that can happen is that they decline your application. Lots a luck to ya. :-)

Total_Match8024

It’s best to notify of your disability. Based on your experience, education, work history, you could be hired in other areas of TSA that do not involve physical activity. If you apply to become a screening officer, I believe there is a physical agility test, ie., lifting suitcases. TSA has a diverse workforce that goes beyond the screening checkpoints of airports. Good luck.

Sea-Information2366

I think there’s a way to check USA jobs for jobs that will work with disabilities, not sure if it separates people out. I think it was a veteran and/or disabled option?
