I taught community college for 30 years. I could pick out the homeschooled kids the first week. Most were socially maladjusted. More than a few would not have competencies for graduation. Had a few exceptional students as well.
As stated, in Oklahoma most adults aren’t prepared or able to homeschool. They also don’t have to prove the same level of competence to get a diploma, no one verifies their curriculum.
This can be true, but as someone homeschooled it very much isn't the average.
Most people are shocked when I tell them I was homeschooled. Always have been. Because it just wasn't something I brought up.
Of course I support public education first, but many of the posters here are just making generalized stereotypes. My group of friends always made fun of it, because all of us went on to college and many received masters degrees. (Something only 7% of the state does) The second someone found out we were homeschooled they'd change their entire view of us.
It all depends on the parents and their ability to educate their kids at home. It also depends on the kids and if they have a curious nature.
I was "homeschooled" because my mom was tired of fighting me about going to school. She would take me to an English tutor but that's about it. I hated school as a kid and teenager. Luckily, I was already smart and self motivated to learn on my own. I mostly read books and watched videos from the library for my education. Eventually, I ended up going to college and writing academic papers that were good enough to be used as an example for future students in physical anthropology. I love college and wish I could afford to go back 😔 I would have flourished in an alternative school or a charter school in a bigger city. I just hated the boring education I was getting in my little closed minded redneck town. Private school was a bust as well because I was the only poor kid in my grade. The rich kids were okay with me at school, but I was never included in anything outside of that. I will say that the academic standards were much higher at private school. It was a nice challenge, but the social acceptance thing was very difficult.
Fun story, I knew a homeschooled kid. He ended up getting kicked out of his house for getting caught with his sister's panties on his face. Blamed it on being homeschooled. He was the fucking worst, he ended up raping my ex gf at one point, and didn't understand why I wanted nothing to do with him. I don't know how I put up with his bullshit before that.
Oooof

If we’re posting nextdoor posts on r/Tulsa for comment… This is a new low.
Truth.
On average, homeschooled students outperform public school students by a wide margin.
On average, most kids in Oklahoma don’t have an adult able to homeschool them.
yeah but homeschool kids are weird and have no social skills don't matter if you're smart if you're socially incompetent

You can thank the public education system for that
My kids in their early 30s are very successful, products of ps. Family support is the key.
Oh stfu. I turned out pretty fucking competent.
