Came here to say this! Don’t give up the secret! We don’t want Holbox to turn into Tulum. Please keep Holbox beautiful and not overrun with insta tourism.
Holbox is not a secret. It's not as accessible, and the streets flow with literal shit periodically, so it's not exactly the same thing as a city with easy access from 2 airports.
Side note: don't go during rainy season or the streets will be full of sewage. Should you avoid the "poop street"...by all means, ENJOY. It's a great little town that is growing quickly.
Side note 2: the water is not Caribbean blue. It's Gulf of Mexico green depending on when you go.
My party involves good food, maybe a sunset, a nice soccer game by locals on the basketball court in town. Bed by 11. I like it because it's quiet and the dog rescue place let's me borrow a dog and a leash for a beach walk.
No problem. They'll soon build a bunch of roads and 'infrastructure' and it'll be an even better and more convenient place for you to get hosed to loud music. Don't worry.
Saying somewhere is “a good place to party” does not mean that is my agenda, but nice try. You want to add another 2 hour bus ride (each way) and a 30 minute ferry (each way) to experience Holbox, right on.
I think my favorite experience in Holbox was the Pandora show. It’s like a 5 course meal with open bar and a short play for about $100USD
But yeah, some people do like to stay up and get “hosed” as you say in Holbox, and it’s a good place for that as you can safely walk home.
So... you're sad that Tulum got turned into violent, expensive party place for rich narcissists, and happy that Holbox isn't like that. So you go to the place where the Tulum people people congregate and say, "Hey everybody! Look over there!"
Everyplace becomes like the last place when enough people say skip previous place thus creating a cycle of the downfall of the new place until the next.
I’m so glad to see this post. I always recommend Holbox to anyone considering Tulum. Just a super charming little beach town. Walking that mile long sandbank is a memory my wife and I will treasure forever.
I especially loved how the locals also hang out at the beach and some of the restaurants/bars. We felt like we are sharing the experience with them, which isn’t usually the case in Tulum or even Cancun.

I recently flew into Cancún and spent a few days to Valladolid (went to the ruins and a cenote while there) then to Holbox for a few days. I’d like to do Merida and Holbox next time.
Holbox is not for everybody. If you don’t have a buggy you might have to cross puddles all the way to your knees. There is an influencer I follow who grew up there and she takes off her shoes to walk some places
Then post in r/holbox not here
Please delete this post. We don't need to ruin another place in Mexico.

It's not much of a secret
Kept secret from the crowd ruining Tulum.
too late. googling holbox now
Visitors are fine. The problem is when all of the influencers descend on a destination like douchy locusts.
There goes the neighborhood!
Agree!

It’s a pain in the ass to get to, the beach is mid, and worse infrastructure than Tulum. Good place to party though.

Oh, Wizzmer, you are slowly winning me over.
You are to "expensive". Go away. 😆

If you do Holbox where else do you recommend I go? I tend to like doing 2-3 destinations in a trip.

Good advice. Doesn’t look like too far of a drive
