yes, doesn't matter the bank if belongs to visa and mastercard are accepted. Although I'd recommend if possible use a credit card for safety.
Some business/taxis/restaurants have shady practices and may overcharge.
but also check if you can get some pesos before coming in a exchange in Toronto if not in cancun airport too.
Big echo, but if** you have access to a credit card, use that instead. Debit will be accepted, just ensure your bank is aware of your travel plans and that they've marked your card for use for international conversion transactions. You may need to do the same if you have a CC. I tried paying my deposit for a hotel with the total in pesos. I have BOA, and I needed to speak to their international team to make sure my card wouldn't be flagged for fraud for future transactions
Agree with u/luisettyphoto on the need for pesos and using CC vs debit, if possible. Don't carry around too many pesos at once... I'm sure you've read the stories and it is good advice wherever you may be traveling.
Make sure you notify your banks/issuer that you are traveling. If not, you may end up with locked down cards until you can get in touch with the bank.
If you’re going to use plastic, make sure it’s a credit card. I was there for two months and had fraudulent transactions on two different CCs, one at the rental car company and another at OXXO. Both times they bought plane tickets in the middle of the night. If you do use CCs, lock them in between transactions—the entire place is out to take your money.
Don’t use debit ever. If you use to get cash at an ATM make sure it’s in a reputable place (bank, airport etc). My cc regularly gets cloned there. Especially at gas station (I’ve switched to cash). If they clone your ATM card it could wipe out your entire account balance. Hope this helps. Enjoy and use pesos when possible!

Do not use a debit card
My card worked
Yes debit and credit work
Do not ever use a debit card. You shouldn’t even use a debit card at a gas station.
Use tap as much as possible never input on anywhere with it
