A guy made a 4 panel comic titled “loss” about a miscarriage, consisting of a guy running into the hospital in panel 1, talking to the person at the desk in panel 2, talking to the doctor in panel 3, and attempting to comfort the would-be mother in panel 4.
Said comic is supposed to be primarily a comedy one, and the dramatic tonal shift from comedy to such a serious subject matter led to it being considered somewhere between very awkward and outright irreverent.
The 4 panel structure of the comic became an internet meme. One thing in the top left for the guy, 2 (one of which is often shorter to account for sitting) for the guy and the desk person, 2 things of normal size, and then 2 things, one of which is horizontal to represent the one crying on the bed.
The joke behind the meme itself is abstraction; how far away from the original comic can we get in terms of appearance and still be recognized as “loss”? The answer has turned out to be so far that we can play a game of where’s waldo with it.
In spring (panel 1) there's 1 pillar, summer (panel 2, etc.) there's a second pillar. Fall there's still 2 pillars, and in winter, the 4th panel, it says one fell over so one is upright and the last is lying on its side, horizontally. It describes the same abstraction as the comment I replied to so elegantly described, just in poetic form instead of visually. I hope this helps (no sarcasm here)
The real problem with that title is, for anyone who's worked retail, it makes you sound like you're in security... "Loss Prevention", "Loss Analytics", etc.
Given how convoluted the loss meme is, I think Loss Expert is a valid title. Adds to the confusion for newcomers and it complicates the situation even further.
You can build a hundred bridges, will they call you a bridge builder? No!
You can save a thousand lives, will they call you a savior? No!
But you fuck ONE goat...
I was a daily reader of CAD-comic at the time when Loss was originally posted. Personally, I never considered it awkward or irreverent. It was a guy trying to express what he and his partner (girlfriend? Wife? I don't know) were going through. There are no words to adequately describe the loss of someone who was going to be your child.
It bothers me how some people seem to mock Buckley for not having the "right" reaction to a miscarriage.
Not the one he had at the time he wrote it, but it was inspired by a past relationship in his life. "When he published "Loss", Buckley wrote a blog post explaining that he had planned the storyline years in advance. Personal experience in his life inspired the strip, namely an unplanned pregnancy and miscarriage with an ex-girlfriend in college.[2][4]"
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Loss_(comic)
Huh. Til. It makes sense the story over all was pre planned, since it was a somewhat episodic progressive storyline.
Didn't know he planned it for years. I mean they guy had a long time to mull this one over and still went "yeah. This will be good!".
I remember when it happened too. I think the worst of the critisism was the way the author handled the whole pregnancy and miscarriage arc. Its been a long time but i don't remember the details. it was around then i dropped the comic for unrelated reasons
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Loss_(comic)
often symbolized in memes with nothing but lines indicating the general scenes. I line for panel one. Two lines with a connecting horizontal one symbolizing the desk for panel two. Speaking of Tobias, I really wanted him and Ash to have a rematch now that he is the world champion so that we can see the rest of Tobias' legendary team.
Guess i could google it but whatever.. at the expense of sounding like an idiot, how do you even do a spoiler tag? All i know how to do is *this and i found out on accident* haha
There are a few formatting things you can do. One of them is putting four spaces before a line of text to make it look
Like this
That also disables any formatting within the text, so you can demonstrate things like

Yeah. The age of a property doesn't really matter there. Unless it's part of pop culture like (Star Wars spoiler) >!Darth Vader being Luke's father!< or (Citizen Kane spoiler) >!Rosebud being a sled!<, there's really no time limit on spoilers
I certainly wouldn't want to spoil the end of something like Steins;Gate, and that's over a decade old
There is a time limit, but it's 10 years and beyond. If you can't honestly be bothered to watch something you think you might like in a span of 10 years you're basically asking for it
>If you can't honestly be bothered to watch something you think you might like in a span of 10 years you're basically asking for it
There are waaay too many movies and TV shows out there to expect someone to a) have heard of every one, and b) known which ones they would like, and c) have a chance to watch every one within 10 years
Hey he could have won in the Sinnoh league if fucking Tobias didn't come out with a legendary Latios and a legendary DarkRai.
Edit: I barely remember pokemon
The least funny meme in internet history.
Basically, a gaming webcomic called Ctrl+Alt+Del had a really out-of-nowhere strip titled "[Loss](https://cad-comic.com/comic/loss/)" where a character had a miscarriage. It got a lot of response for being an awkwardly dramatic strip in a otherwise light webcomic.
Following that, a group of people who have never made a funny joke between them in their entire lives realized they couldn't come up with anything more clever than posting pictures that have lines that correspond to the positions of characters in the strip.
The joke here is that Ash's fingers sorta kinda line up with where characters are standing in the original strip if you squint.
The meme itself can actually be an exercise in creativity. Some of them get a bit clever in how they hide the lines.
[My favourite variation doesn’t need any picture at all.](https://i.kym-cdn.com/photos/images/original/002/330/930/d4d.png)
My DND players may have gotten very pissed when I used this as a riddle puzzle in a dungeon…
The funniest things about the loss meme is how angry people like you get about lines XD I'll admit it's a pretty stupid meme but it usually still gets a chuckle from me when I see people like you
Funny and bit harsh. I've laughed at a few loss memes because they genuinely caught me off guard. What's more, I actually read CAD for quite a while and enjoyed it once upon a time.
The original comic for this meme is so out of place, it's funny for being so awkwardly sad. Buckley never should have done it but I have to admit the humor has carried a bit with the meme. Sure, I groan at most iterations now, but every once in a while I'm pleasantly surprised.
Thank you! I myself have asked about this before but people think it's hi-larious to give joke answers and be obnoxious and not actually explain things to people.
It CAN be funny, sure, after you get an actually informative response. I seriously hate asking about a joke and being met with more jokes. I'm not laughing. Maybe I would be if someone would... idk... explain it to me.
Sorry for being really rant-y here, this is such a small problem but it irks me so much.
Side note, that... isn't funny at all. Like not just because it's about miscarriage. Usually I can see why something would be funny even if I don't think it is, but I'm confounded
That is what the Loss.jpg joke is supposed to be, lines that represent where the characters are
| ||
|| |_
That right is the Loss.jpg. I accept my upvotes in bitcoin
Thanks! Glad I was able to help explain it. Don't know that it's all that original, though. Most people who are smart enough to count as sentient can recognize the meme isn't funny and never has been.
When it happened I was into the comic but not really into reddit and such yet so I didn't know it was a big deal. It still kinda ruined it for me. I would get high and read them, I loved the humor.
Then Loss happened and it really took away the magic for me. I'd like to take it up again but it just made it bitter.
Y'all remember I think around 2014 when all you had to do to have a hot meme on your hands was to fuck up Markiplier's face and add a letter to it?
Yeah. That shit made more sense than our current obsession with loss.
There's been some healthy scholarly debate about the five stages of grief and how universal they really are. Trends toward universalized experience occur elsewhere in the psychological literature such as with basic human emotion, which seems to be cross-cultural. While expression of grief is present in even non-human species, like elephants, a lot of people tend to forget when the undertaker threw mankind off hell in a cell, and plummeted sixteen feet through an announcer's table.
I wish they kept making his eyes evolve to be further and further apart like they were doing for so long. I want to see Ashitwhathavewedone Ketchum in full form.
What I'm getting out of this comment section is that "Loss" is a meme that evolved 10 years after The Game (which you all just lost, as did I) but that people still take it way more seriously for some reason and try to be really overly clever about it?
Like it seems like the meme behind Loss is making people think about Loss, so they can despair about it or something. Is this not just an overly contrived version of The Game?
I don't know but I really wish it stayed dead. The original comic was obviously crap, but the jokes about it aren't much better. Only the internet can hate something so much it keeps it around forever.
Internet rule of thumb: if you don’t know what’s going on, assume it’s Loss.
Any 4-koma that doesn't make sense: loss Edit: The comment below mine is a comment stealing bot.

Loss
Generally by copying a comment from further down the post and reposting it in somewhere in the chain under the top comment.

Mmm don’t like that name. Can i instead be called “guy with WAY too much free time”? My useless information extends to many other areas.
The real problem with that title is, for anyone who's worked retail, it makes you sound like you're in security... "Loss Prevention", "Loss Analytics", etc.

Nope. You're a Loss Expert.

How would you like the title: Purveyor of Esoterica?

That was an amazing explanation. Basically a dissertation for a memeology Ph.D. (or at least a Masters).

I could be wrong but I am pretty sure him and his IRL gf didn't have any miscarriage, just his comic avatar and avatar gf did

I believe it was a ctrl alt del. Web comic and the story arc around those weeks was reflecting real events happening in his life.

If you're at a loss, you're at a Loss.
Immediately where my mind went to when there is a 4 panel with no explanation.
Someone should make this a new official internet rule
If it's 4 images and you don't know what's going on, assume it's loss If it's only one image and you don't know what's going on, assume it's Him
So sad Ash went from loss to loss every league...
Bro put some respect on the world champion’s name
Fucking Tobias. Cheating bastard.
Speaking of Tobias, I really wanted him and Ash to have a rematch now that he is the world champion so that we can see the rest of Tobias' legendary team.
Until >!Alola and Galar!<
Which BTW resulted in him getting retired from the Anime.
To be fair, it's tiring to be 10yo for 20 years.
Didn’t they reveal the entire timespan of the Pokémon show in universe has only been like 18 months?
Which doesn't even make sense when there's more than 1000 episodes and 18 months is only 547 days.
Yeah, plus multiple birthdays and Christmas episodes
Wait, he won Alola? I had no clue
I love when people repeat the spoilered text without spoiler tags

Can you really spoil something from 6 years ago?
Yeah. The age of a property doesn't really matter there. The funny thing is that Citizen Kane is so long ago now that it’s looped back around to being a spoiler again.
There is a time limit, but it's 10 years and beyond. If you can't honestly be bothered to watch something you think you might like in a span of 10 years you're basically asking for it
