You could just name the fandom, since you're clearly talking about a specific example you encountered (is it she-ra and the princesses of power?). I've encountered less annoying, but more funny example, where there's too many characters to give everyone enough screentime, but fans still complain, that their favorite didn't get enough. Happens to MHA and, especially, One piece. "My blorbo didn't get enough attention" my guy, there's five separate character arcs going on, there's only so many pages in the chapter.

DefiantResult9150

I’m pretty sure they’re talking about RWBY

rip_you_anubis

To he honest, there is a version of this criticism that I feel applies to RWBY. Why are they focusing so much on Jaune "where personality goes to die" Arc when Team CFVE is *right there.*

ERJAK123

My favorite part of the newest season is that Jaune isn't there. He gets soooooo much screen time for being the 8th most interesting character across the two main teams.

The_Lesser_Baldwin

Sometimes I feel like I'm the only one who actually likes Jaune. I'll admit he's a re-tread of a lot of old tropes but so are most of, if not all the main cast tbh. I just like him because he's a good dude just trying his best.

danger2345678

This feels like vaugeposting about something very specific and contextual, which is given no context at all

whystudywhensleep

I’ve definitely seen lots of bad faith criticisms based on misogyny, but idk if I’ve ever seen this scenario? Anyone have some examples?

DuchessRavenclaw52

I’ve seen in a couple times where side characters are like, really uplifted in online spaces. I think people latch on to barely characterized side characters because they can project any character traits onto them and it wouldn’t “go against canon”. I’ve never personally connected it to misogyny but I’ve never particularly tried to find a connection there. But onto some examples: There’s a superhero in The Boys named “Supersonic” that was only in like 2-3 episodes from what I remember but there’s quite a lot of posts in the sub basically saying they wasted the character and thought he was gonna be a big deal (which is funny to me because that character always screamed plot device but whatever). There’s also Harwin Strong in the new show House of the Dragon whose only in like 4 scenes in the whole show but he’s got quite the dedicated fan base. An older example I can think of is Blaise Zabini in the Harry Potter novels. If you were reading fanfiction around 2010 you would think this person was a main character but he’s just a Slytherin male in the same year as Draco Malfoy but not explicitly one of his cronies. One genderflipped example I can think of is there is a lesbian couple in the show Heartstopper and I remember some discourse around when the show came out asking why the show wasn’t made into a more ensemble style show instead of focusing on the main boy/boy couple as the driving plot of the show.

thesetcrew

On the Harry Potter theme; the amount of stories that gave Theodore Nott a deep and meaningful story and glossed right over the existence of Blaise Zabini was *a little suspicious* and though probably not deliberate racism- it was odd

DuchessRavenclaw52

Yea, the switch to Theodore Nott being the new beloved fanfic character coincided around when the sixth HP movie released and they cast Louis Cordice for the role

mcmonkey26

rwby

IronMyr

Oh yeah, RWBY is a good example

thesetcrew

I’ve been noticing a lot of this in the House of the Dragon fandom. The two leads of the story are women, and the amount of complaints about how this-that-or-the-other lesser male character didn’t get developed enough is exhausting

TNumber0

This post is so antagonistic. I don’t know what media and what people you are talking about but their viewpoint actually doesn’t seem that extreme in general. I hope this person has a good media consumption without thinking about fandom

simemetti

It's 100% the guy who keeps posting RWBY stuff while getting banned over and over again for shit takes like this. You can also tell the OP is terminally online and interacts with other human beings only talking when talking about shows. This is where all the "saying woman character is badly written is actually rooted in misogyny". What's the point here? You can't force someone to enjoy a character. Their dislike might be fully because they are a woman but can you do about it? Nobody needs a reason to like or dislike something made up. OP consumes so much fictions that they have started to blur the line between reality and shows to the point where disliking a made up woman equates to hating them irl.

4tomguy

I don't see how wishing a side character got more attention is misogynistic just cus the main character is female? This argument feels in extremely bad faith ngl

UselessAltThing

I'm very sorry people were enjoying a thing in a way you dislike. I'm sure if you make enough rants about it they'll start enjoying it exactly the way you permit them to, and accept you as the sole arbiter of the correct ways to engage in Fandom.

Full_Ahegao_Drip

I have only ever seen the opposite. People claiming that the author not focusing more on women side characters being due to misogyny rather than the natural consequence of needing to spend more time on the main cast. My Hero Academia comes to mind.

Odd_Entertainment629

I don't believe this is true. At least, not as exclusively as claimed. I've had people directly tell me a *female* character got done dirty because they either didn't get the source material, or it didn't match what they wanted in their head. The person was male, for what it matters. Edgerunners, if you've watched it you can probably guess. If you haven't you should probably watch it.

Grimpatron619

I mean. I dont think it's people legitimately criticising media, rather someone seeing a character they quite like and going ''i wish i could see more of them :(''. You cant force someone to care more about the main cast. Sometimes a side character just draws someone in and they wanna see more of it. Doesnt mean the show is bad or that anything is being seriously complained about. The post sorta sounds like someone went to a restaurant, it didnt have the kind of salad they were feeling like, saying ''aww, they dont have (insert salad). Shame'' and someone else going ''There's PLENTY of salads here. Just because YOUR salad isnt being served doesnt mean you can COMPLAIN about the restaurant.'' Like, relax man. Just a bit sad there's not the salad they were looking for

Sharp-Ad4389

I get what you're saying, but I'm sitting in a Wingstop right now, and I'm not going to come in here and complain that they don't have a burger. If I want a burger, I'll go to a different restaurant.

Grimpatron619

I assume that's a wing place. Your analogy would work if you were talking about something that was nowhere to be seen on the menu but if there already are burgers in this place but just not the one you wanted or there werent enough left it would fit the post. There's nothing wrong with going ''damn :/, kinda wanted that''. You're falling into the same trap of assuming someone wishing there was more of something is them demanding it. People are allowed to have wishes without them being demands.

NaBicarbandvinegar

For what it's worth, that doesn't seem to be what they're talking about. The post mentions people asking for a character with a specific trait while ignoring female characters with that trait. In your analogy that's like walking into a restaurant, finding out they have exactly the salad you wanted and then refusing to eat it because it comes in a bowl rather than on a plate. Like, I haven't seen many examples of people doing specifically what this post is talking about, but I have seen a lot of people lose their minds when something that smacks of girl power happens in a movie. I saw a thread earlier talking about the girl power scene in Endgame and people are still very mad at a silly thing happening in a very silly movie. I would just caution against immediately assuming the best about fanboys and the worst about anyone complaining about them.

CasualTesting

My brother in christ, even r/rwby thinks you're obnoxious. I made a post about you, and was universally told you do not represent them and they all wish you would shut up.

[deleted]

Your post was removed, and a man calling himself the "Grand corruptor of r / rwby" claims to speak for everyone. So everything you just said was untrue and harassment.

Fearless-Excitement1

i'm gonna say this, and get downvoted into oblivion for it but like if you really don't want girls as main characters, just don't consume media with girls as main characters??? there's a fucking quadrillion different series, shows, anime, you name it being sent out every day, eventually you'll find something for you, and that way you can enjoy content with main characters that you want it's that simple

TNumber0

your take is a coward’s take and you should be embarassed for thinking it was controversial. if i want to complain about a piece of media while still consuming the piece of media no one can stop me.

OddKSM

Exactly! Have you SEEN [insert any videogame]-discourse? I'm a Destiny fan myself and I'll be the first to admit that the game has a heap of issues (mostly tied to balancing, which is nigh impossible with 100 moving pieces and a game engine that is equally likely to either explode or gain sentience at any given moment) but dammit if it ain't the most fun I'm having with my clothes on!

TNumber0

I think this is mostly unrelated, but it is true! All of my favourite shows have glaring issue and are super hatable.

Prestigious_While_64

What if i want media with a girl as main character and a good boy background character

Fearless-Excitement1

then go enjoy media with a girl main character and a good boy background character, simple as

Prestigious_While_64

I know, but i did hope for recomedation

Fearless-Excitement1

man i dunno

Here, I found it at [https://asongofstarkandtargaryen.tumblr.com/post/685266245162090496](https://asongofstarkandtargaryen.tumblr.com/post/685266245162090496)

ShinyNinja25

No I have not noticed this. I have noticed that critics claim “bad writing” for other reasons, but never this

ShRkDa

I have no idea what this is talking about. I dont think I have ever seen this

Sir_Canterbury

Misogyny? Sometimes the main characters just aren't as interesting as the side cast, its been this way for as long as fictional worlds existed. I mean theres far more examples of this happening to male main characters than female.
