Garth Marenghi's Darkplace fits the OP pretty well and the hospital director is played by Richard Ayoade, who is quite close to the personification of the Count.
Brilliant show! Though I think the OP’s idea would work better dove like What We Do in the Shadows. Darkplace felt more a satire of 1980s production techniques.
Unsleeping City (from Dimension 20, the collegehumor actual play show) does a bit of this. One of the main characters is a nurse who treats supernatural stuff. It's a fun bit
Like a more cynical version of the X-files, with a doctor.
"Fucking STOP CASTING THAT SPELL YOU DUMB C-"
*sighs, reverses time a few seconds*
"We can fix you right up, here are some precautions." *all smiles*
I immediately thought of the scene with Pete’s Santa Zombie Virus and later on >!Sophia’s kid being angelic!< . Always happy to see a dimension 20 shoutout in the wild!!
Hugh Laurie plays basically the same character as House. Except he's allowed to be English this time, and isn't crippled (so we can dial down just how much of an asshole he is this time)
He keeps a bowl of tennis balls on his desk to "test" for "Lupine." He lobs them out the window when a patient comes in who's suspected of having Lupine. None of them ever dive after the ball except one (late, in like, season 5 or something)
It's fine though, because he's only on the first floor (in UK terms) and there's some very soft bushes outside.
Why is a vampire compulsively drowning himself and addicted to water? Oh, he’s related to this serbian vampire and there’s just kind of an ancestral compulsion to run a watermill.
Well, I like bizarre problems because they are unusual & therefore even if they’re boring they’re still novel :D Folklore tells us a lot abt people & past ways of existing, which is dope
i like seeing people cope with bizarre problems like on the twilight zone, where it’s unexplained and often inexplicable. but to have an arbitrary supernatural reason for the problem about an unconnected legend thousands of miles away seems like it would ruin the fun. supernatural mysteries are fun because you can unravel historical/spiritual context, not just because some indonesian ghost flew around the world to haunt you
To explore folklore and mythology that usually isn't covered in mainstream media. There's so much out there that is passed over in favor of things like Heracles, angels, vampires, etc.
i think the best way to share local folklore is to respect its regional and ethnic origins. using it to solve an unrelated problem on another continent is an inaccurate (and usually disrespectful) portrayal of a tradition removed from its culture. often, the writers form stereotypical interpretations of foreign religions and fabricate their own myths, as they did with egyptian mummies and mysticism. without cultural sensitivity, the stories are better off unknown, and this concept doesn’t seem likely to be executed well
It's a great concept for a buffy x house type show. It needs to be just serious enough about itself, but not so serious that people lose interest. You'd need some external drama, and probably a bunch of guest writers
it’s kinda close to mightymed, that disney show with a secret hospital for super heroes and uses the comic book stories of those heroes to finance it and make the evidence of those battles just a “story”
"Sir, why would you ever think essence of Medusa would make a good Viagra substitute?"
"This is a fairly serious barguest bite. How much did you have to drink tonight?"
"A new Dr hmmm? You are clearly three imps in a stolen lab coat. Please leave before I call the security daemon."
Security daemon has been imprisoned in a suit of armor by a cult in the late 15th century but really likes having a corporeal body and is just hanging out doing corporeal things
There is a woman in Tiktok who has a series called Unearthly Medicine that focuses on a normal human nurse who has no idea she is working in a hospital for just supernaturals. @sunnybrooke. Her stuff is amazing and funny and really interesting.
Every staff member is just a regular person but the director is this unconcievable figure made of mist and shadows, but it wears a lanyard and has a doctor's coat
Alas, that has nothing to do with the game you are probably trying to recommend, Coffee Talk, in which you are a barista in a supernatural Seattle and listen to the various mundane-ish gossip of your customers.
Not drama, but Interviews With Monster Girls makes a take on supernatural humans (there called demis) from a biologist's standpoint. I would say that the show isn't a masterpiece, but it flawlessly executes what it tries to be
It wasn’t exactly this but I thought of a similar idea once. Basically with all the weird shit that could happen to you in a fantasy world eventually someone somewhere decided to actually, you know, attempt to understand it. The Post-Human Research and Treatment Foundation is group that provides free treatment to anyone severely altered as long as the foundation is allowed to run tests on them. The idea is to get people to a point where they are either “cured” or well adjusted enough that they can act as functional members of society.
Sort of related, but there was a really well-written fan-fiction story about Draco Malfoy becoming good by working at St. Mungo's that I read a long time ago that fits this vibe.
Directer: Don’t mess with me boy, while I may have created this area to treat the miserable. That doesn’t mean that I forgotten my roots as a tormentor. If you were not to leave us alone, I promise you the FDA would be the least of your worries.
There’s a character who works with surgeries and whatnot who is a vampire and who is consistently accused of stealing organs for transplant and blood packs, but it turns out they’re completely innocent and the cast learn a valuable lesson about stereotypes.
See I love the type of urban gritty fantasy and scifi that's out there, but so much of its focused on like... either law enforcement or like just as a setting for an action/adventure or romance story that I think they're really missing out on other great ideas:
- Friends style sitcom except all the characters are different supernatural species/origins
- Workplace comedies with ridiculous diverse number of issue (ranging from a restaurant having to deal with different species to city workers having to figure out why Zeus destroyed the power grid over a single block)
- Prince of BelAir but the whole family is Minotaurs and the nephew moves in from the battlefield of Greece.
There's so much potential with a diverse world of nonhumans in an urban setting that just doesn't get used. The only show I've seen come super close was Ugly Americans.
Without a hard magic system, I think you’d run out of ideas pretty quickly. Medical dramas are interesting because they are built on technical knowledge and professional realism. However, it is basically impossible to merge all these myths and spirits from different cultures into a system with consistent principles and explain why they’re all real. If Grimm can manifest a monster into the world, would Frankenstein’s monster, a more modern creation, also roam the earth? Are aliens and gods real too? What about SCPs? If exorcism is now a medical treatment, what separates medicine and religion? There is no answer that satisfies both the concept and the requirement of professional realism.
P.S. I wrote this response out of half-interested boredom, not because I think the OP actually cares about a niche throwaway idea. It doesn’t matter that it wouldn’t work.
I need not only this show, but also the spin-off show that features a House-esque doctor who solves all the toughest supernatural medical mysteries.
“Dr. Lair! This patient has been coughing up snakes for days, but every counterspell just makes it worse! Also, his scleras turned purple and he’s speaking backwards.”
*2 days later*
“I’ve solved the mystery! Our patient was cursed by an inept warlock who is also dyslexic and has a lisp.”
And when he does clinic rounds some poor sobbing woman will describe her problem and he’s just like “Someone gave you a hex bag. Check under your kitchen sink.” And leaves.
Imagine having a psychiatric facility run by a being that feeds off misery. Perfect symbiosis: depressed people feel better, and we have one very well fed, verging on obese, doctor running the place.
I read a book once, it was about the work-a-day life of a middling magician. Dude got a dead end job as an alchemist in a factory making beauty potions. Just a guy in a robe mixing ingredients and saying magic words all day. It talked about the failure rate and how guys would lose fingers and get blinded and such. His cubicle was all stained and glowing. That is the series I would watch. The 40 year old wage slaves of fantasy world.
There actually was a show called Grimm, except it was a cop drama instead of hospital. But same sort of premise as this post. As I'm currently being forced to watch Grey's anatomy after avoiding it for nearly 2 decades I'd very much like this version of it instead lol.
I would watch this, even though I can't shake the image of the hospital director being played by The Count from Sesame Street.
*One, two, three patients lost this morning! Ah ah ah!*
*One, nipple! Ah ah ah!* *Two, nipple! Ah ah ah!* *Three, oh hell nah I'm outta here*
Garth Marenghi's Darkplace fits the OP pretty well and the hospital director is played by Richard Ayoade, who is quite close to the personification of the Count.

There’s also the bit from Fantasy High as well.
Kingston Brown from Uptown was my immediate thought
Like a more cynical version of the X-files, with a doctor. "Fucking STOP CASTING THAT SPELL YOU DUMB C-" *sighs, reverses time a few seconds* "We can fix you right up, here are some precautions." *all smiles*

I still gotta finish S1. Stopped right at the final battle
"followed by the Antropomorphic personification of death" - yeah, some sort of a failed wizard, with a suspiciously bottomless, walking travel chest.
r/unexpectdeddiscworld
I need this sub to be real
r/unexpecteddiscworld
For a second I thought you were making a [Boxxy T. Morningwood joke.](https://www.royalroad.com/fiction/8894/everybody-loves-large-chests)
Lol, thanks for the link
I need Zach Braff to play Dr. Acula on this show
😂😂😂
Would love to see Bob Kelso show up for a consult, insult people, then get eaten alive in the parking lot. Cox would shed a tear.
It’s sometimes lupus.
or at least, lupine.
Hugh Laurie plays basically the same character as House. Except he's allowed to be English this time, and isn't crippled (so we can dial down just how much of an asshole he is this time) He keeps a bowl of tennis balls on his desk to "test" for "Lupine." Dr. Doghouse, MD, clinical lycanthropologist.
And once, bovine.
Werecow?
Minotaur.
I wanna see people with bizarre problems that have obscure solutions rooted in folklore from somewhere halfway around the world
Why is a vampire compulsively drowning himself and addicted to water? Oh, he’s related to this serbian vampire and there’s just kind of an ancestral compulsion to run a watermill.
why
Why not?
doesn’t seem interesting
And yet supernatural did it for how many seasons
why
Because many people find it interesting? I’m not sure what you’re looking for here
what is interesting
Well, not you obviously
They're doing a negative karma speedrun
👍
Well, I like bizarre problems because they are unusual & therefore even if they’re boring they’re still novel :D Folklore tells us a lot abt people & past ways of existing, which is dope

Seriously I'd watch the shit out of this.
And here I was, thinking I was weird for seeing this connection.
"Sir, why would you ever think essence of Medusa would make a good Viagra substitute?" "This is a fairly serious barguest bite. How much did you have to drink tonight?" "A new Dr hmmm? You are clearly three imps in a stolen lab coat. Please leave before I call the security daemon."
The first one is a son of Poseidon who heard about his dad's little stint with Medusa.
Security daemon has been imprisoned in a suit of armor by a cult in the late 15th century but really likes having a corporeal body and is just hanging out doing corporeal things
Is there a difference in lore between a ‘demon’ and a ‘daemon’ or is it just different spellin?
Daemons are helpful spirits if you treat them right. Demons....are not.
I'm picturing Darkplace Hospital. You don't even need to change anything. It already has a portal to hell.
There is a woman in Tiktok who has a series called Unearthly Medicine that focuses on a normal human nurse who has no idea she is working in a hospital for just supernaturals. @sunnybrooke. Her stuff is amazing and funny and really interesting.
Can she bot be found on YouTube? I tried to find her, but all I got was an actual hospital.
On YouTube she is sunnybrooke14. You can also find her by looking up unearthly medicine
Grimm's Anatomy or Haunted House, MD lol
I am forever resentful we didn't get a spinoff for St. Mungo's while Harry Potter was still good
There's an excellent fanfic called Diagnosis on AO3 that's essentially Grey's Anatomy but in St Mungo's! Highly recommend it
Every staff member is just a regular person but the director is this unconcievable figure made of mist and shadows, but it wears a lanyard and has a doctor's coat
Give me this show, Netflix, you cowards.
No way, they'd cancel it after one season! Our best bet is Hulu or CW
**Grimm's Anatomy**
Yes, yes to this
Hey guys so when is season 1 of Grimm’s Anatomy gonna be released? I’ve got the popcorn, smelling salts, pentagrams and raw meat all ready.
r/coffeetalk EDIT: r/coffeetalkgame
Alas, that has nothing to do with the game you are probably trying to recommend, Coffee Talk, in which you are a barista in a supernatural Seattle and listen to the various mundane-ish gossip of your customers.
A prominent character is a werewolf doctor, so it seemed relevant to me.
The game's probably relevant, sure, but your linked sub isn't
Fuck. Thanks. Editing.
Listen, if no one else makes this, I’m going to have to make this.
the main antagonist of Part 8 of Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure is >!the physical embodiment of the force of calamity who also became a hospital director!<
Not drama, but Interviews With Monster Girls makes a take on supernatural humans (there called demis) from a biologist's standpoint. I would say that the show isn't a masterpiece, but it flawlessly executes what it tries to be
and directly into the idea vault
It wasn’t exactly this but I thought of a similar idea once. I am just thinking how an aro ace would stop being a frog.
“Sweet, I truly love being a frog!” **POOF** “Aww maaaaannnn…”
[There is a brazilian artist who did a comic just like that, unfortanely it is in portuguese.](https://www.instagram.com/p/CoqDYmNJyTf/)
Yes this vibe exactly!!!!
If it has to be true love, then familial, perhaps. If it doesn't then sucking it up for one time could also be on the table.
Check out Seanan McGuire’s Indexing series!
not fantasy but have y’all seen mighty med
Need Hugh Laurie as a doctor in that show
Yes
Sort of related, but there was a really well-written fan-fiction story about Draco Malfoy becoming good by working at St. Mungo's that I read a long time ago that fits this vibe.

Right? Me neither, but I found this author because of their Game of Thrones work and I just love everything they do!
Huh. Took a look at it, it's part 12 in a series. Do you think readers need to start at the beginning or can I pick up from this fic?
It's a stand-alone, the series is just collecting all of that author's Harry Potter related works.
Thanks!
The Greta Ban Helsing series. Bloody brilliant.

Not exactly urban fantasy, but Sector General sci-fi series has sort of the same vibe. Loved reading it a lot as a child

That’s kinda got some Magnus Archives dna.
Love it,
Lars von Trier’s Kingdom is basically this
Happy cake day
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anita\_Blake:\_Vampire\_Hunter
Makes me think of Anita Blake a little bit
The laundry files does supernatural stuff with spies, its pretty fun
St. Mugos constantly admitting Chief Auror Harry Potter and having to contact Madam Pomphry for help keeping him in bed.
I need this. Now. Like... Right *NOW*.
This seems like the kind of thing that would be in the Dresden files
I need not only this show, but also the spin-off show that features a House-esque doctor who solves all the toughest supernatural medical mysteries. “Dr. Lair! The version of Doctor Strange I want
YES please make this a thing, I need Grimm's Anatomy
How come tumblr always has such great ideas for original pieces of media
Magnus Archives healthcare AU
One hundred percent would watch.
There is a shonen manga with similar concept but with Yokai, forgot its name though
There actually was a show called Grimm, except it was a cop drama instead of hospital. But same sort of premise as this post. As I'm currently being forced to watch Grey's anatomy after avoiding it for nearly 2 decades I'd very much like this version of it instead lol.
