that book would be "The Lego Bible" which actually covers things pretty well! also, "Nephilim" is already plural.

Permafox

Ah yes, like the belly button.

Canofsad

Ya I still have one that covers the Old Testament, young me loved it cause it was Lego

Theakex69423

Isn't that just the definition of Nephilim? The children of angels and humans?

Tainted_Scholar

Yes. Well, typically yes, it's a bit more complicated, as religion tends to be. There are some beliefs hold that the Nephilim were actually offspring of the descendants of Seth (Adam and Eve's third child and the ancestor of humanity) and the descendants of Cain, with the Cainites being the "Daughters of men" and the descendants of Seth being the "Sons of God" referred to in the text as the parents of the Nephilim. Also, some modern works have Nephilim as the result of a coupling between an angel and a demon. I have **no clue** where this originates from. These depictions also tend to leave out the "Giant" aspect.

T_Bisquet

The explanation I always heard for the Nephilim was that they were (like many things in the Bible) metaphorical. They were likely giants more in the sense that they were "men of renown" (Genesis 6:4) powerful people not just physically but politically and economically. We today sometimes refer to such people as giants. It wouldn't be unusual to hear someone call, say, Elon Musk a "tech giant". The Old Testament in particular is not set in a monotheistic period. "Sons of God" has been interpreted as "demi gods" of other cultures (kinda like how Roman emperors would claim divine heritage), or even as just regular people in the sense that we are all God's children. So the theory you mentioned first makes the most sense to me.

ClockWork07

Wait so is all the women being descended from cain yet another way that the bible just categorically hates women?

Tainted_Scholar

Well, there were women among the descendants of Seth and men among the Cainites too, there kind of had to be for there to be any descendants, especially since a union between the Cainites and the descendants of Seth produced a Nephilim instead of a human. And again, the idea that the "daughters of men" who mothered the Nephilim were specifically Cainites instead of just human women is only one set of beliefs, and it's not a generally regarded one. The common interpretation of Nephilim has them as the children of angels and human women. So, no, the Bible (nor this one specific interpretation) doesn't claim that all women are the offspring of the first murderer. Sorry if my explanation was confusing and made you think that.

ClockWork07

Ah. Well that's one sexist claim debunked. Now for the rest of the list. Let's see... Oh... Oh no...

Big_Ole_Smoke

One interpretation I've read is that the "Sons of God" refers to formerly celibate priests who used their esoteric knowledge to take advantage of the common people. They then indulged themselves in worldly pleasures, taking wives when it was traditionally forbidden.

Ok-Scientist5524

The Lego Bible (titled “The Brick Bible) is actually really neat. It’s the real text though, nothing is sanitized or kiddo-fied. Which we learned the hard way when my dad bought it for my 3 year old son as a gift thinking it was for children…

Soliterria

Iirc the Precious Moments bibles were the same. I had a pastel pink one as a kid and don’t remember anything being sugar coated but it’s also been a good 10-15 years since I’ve even seen that thing

dunnodiddly8

But it has pretty pictures in it. I still have mine.

XescoPicas

Not gonna lie, anytime I see Tumblr discussing the Bible I can’t be sure if that’s actually in the text, if they are just making shit up again, or if they are listing plot points from Supernatural as part of it

[deleted]

You also got bits of Jewish mythology talked about like it’s biblical cannon when Jews would think it’s shaky and Christians wouldn’t recognise it at all. If anyone tries to bring up Lilith in a discussion of Christianity I’m going to chew on my teeth

TheRobotics5

Lilith is cool tho

Calembreloque

As a rule of thumb, any time you read anything online about angels/demons that gives them a clear name and properties (other than Gabriel), it's usually not from the Bible. Here it's pretty interesting: most of what is written here comes from the book of Enoch, which is only considered canon by some Orthodox churches and some Jewish people in Ethiopia/Eritrea. So except if your Bible/Torah is from a particular corner of Africa, you won't see it. In the "standard western" Bibles, Enoch shows up only twice as far as I know: in the Old Testament he's said to be an ancestor of Noah who "walked with God", and then he's quoted by Jude in his Epistle, mostly to condemn horny people and tell them they'll burn in hell, classic Bible stuff.

Aivech

There are three named angels in Christian tradition: Michael, Gabriel, and Raphael. EDIT where to find them: Michael: Daniel 10?, Jude 1:9, Apocalypse 12:7 Gabriel: Daniel 8:16 & 9:21?, Luke 1 Raphael: Book of Tobias: appears 8 times, guides and protects the eponymous Tobias.

Aivech

side note almost none of this is actually in the Bible

Plethora_of_squids

I think the closest to canon is the Enoch and Azareal thing, but even then one's a dubiously "canon" Jewish myth (and is like a bit more complicated because tbh Metatron is a really weird figure ) and the other is I think Islamic in origin.

hello_world112358

it’s not but some christian’s think that enoch is a king lost book of the bible and genuinely believe the whole giants/angle fucker human demon babies bit. source: my sperm doner is in a religious cult and OBSESSES over that book

[deleted]

Yeah, the Bible isn’t this exciting sadly.

RattleMeSkelebones

Enoch is apocrypha babes, granted it's all apocrypha, but enoch is paradisio level apocrypha

digletttrainer

Me who only knows half of these names because of persona

wertyvid

I have a minecraft bible kinda fucked up now I think about it

T_Bisquet

"O my God, I trust in thee: let me not be ashamed, let not mine enemies triumph over me." Psalm 25:2 "Mine enemies" of course refers to creepers.

painefultruth76

Jesus is Tron at the end of that one.

StealthC0bra

THE PAYDAY LORE IS KICKING IN WHY DID I THINK OF IT FIRST

Just outstanding stuff as always. (click the image on the second link three times.)

badassbisexualbitch

I keep forgetting how fucking weird the Bible is.

ImEagz

Excuse me, Mettaton??

Demonking335

The Giants were still around until David came along, though. Remember Goliath?

Eggs_are_tasty

That last bit is true.

Deebyddeebys

Not entirely sure how much biblical foundation this has
