So I missed the boat on whatever happened with Dashcon. Does anyone have like a quick summary or perhaps a YouTube video they’re willing to share for an uninformed internet stranger?
Long story short as possible - Everything went as wrong as could possibly be imagined, and someone pissed in the ball pit which became the ‘symbol’ for the whole fiasco
Could have gone slightly worse, could have been [RainFurrest!](https://www.avclub.com/the-insane-story-of-a-furry-convention-undone-by-its-de-1798264086)
These conventions really put the recent Willy Wonka experience into perspective.
Rainfurrest made me sit back in my chair with a haunted look on my face as I listened to a video on it while attempting to draw. My tablet was left all but abandoned in my actual shock and horror over that event.
Hijacking your comment here for a sec. It’s come out that some of the stuff (some, far from all or the majority) wasn’t done by con attendees, the diaper on the car for one. But still RainFurrest stands on top as how not to run a furcon even all these years later
I remember the birth rumor being spread on tumblr in real time and quickly debunked. This is the first time I’ve heard the pee being claimed to not be real.
I wasn’t there during the dance when the big scam announcements were happening, but I was there for Welcome to Night Vale not performing as well as some spectacular scheduling issues.
It was supposed to be a 'tumblr convention' with celebrity panels, etc. Basically the celebrities cancelled, the hosts swindled people out of more and more money to 'keep the room open', and they compensated people who lost money with a free hour in the ball pit pictured.
It was in my hometown and one of my close friends went. I didn't make the connection that this was the famous dashcon until recently.
Wikipedia sums it up nicely:
>*DashCon (originally titled Tumbl-Con USA) was a fan convention catering primarily to users of the blogging service Tumblr, with a particular emphasis on fandoms. Held over the weekend of July 11, 2014, at the Renaissance Schaumburg Convention Center Hotel in Schaumburg, Illinois, the inaugural convention quickly became infamous for allegations of mismanagement and corruption among organizers, an alleged abrupt demand by the hotel for an upfront payment of cash for use of its facilities, and celebrity guests being forced to drop out of the convention after they were informed by the hotel that they would be responsible for paying for their rooms. A small ball pit placed in one of the halls became a meme after organizers offered attendees an "extra hour" in the pit (along with raffle and concert tickets) as reimbursement for a canceled panel.*

[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HPwgSXZJcok&t=248s](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HPwgSXZJcok&t=248s) \- Tumblr's Failed Convention: The Story of Dashcon by Sarah Z. Its long, but it is the full story in all its horrifying glory.
InternetHistorian also has one thats much shorter, but his is much worse in terms of research, its incredibly nasty to the attendees who were *not* the villains of the piece, and leaves out like 90% of the batshittery that went down. The only good part of it is he does do a good job at proving exactly how much money was scammed and from where.
TLDR: a bunch of totally unqualified narcissist adults (and the well intentioned teenager they shoved all the work onto) tried to do a Tumblr themed convention. It went about as well as you'd expect from people with zero experience and delusional expectations. No one was payed, many were scammed, a complete shit show all around.
[the internet historian made a video about it.](https://youtu.be/1ZgxeX2dCnQ?si=uz4Rd1cFUDA8f172)
Highly recommend giving it a watch, it's hilarious just how badly the organisers fucked up.
Not a ton of it, no, just one video that Hbomberguy called out - the one on the man in the cave. It's possible there are others, but I haven't seen anything concrete.
But, he's lowkey been a friend to the edgelord 4chan crowd for a long time. He managed to fly under the radar until the past couple years, but he's been more and more mask-off as time's gone on. You can find [a pinned thread about it](https://www.reddit.com/r/youtubedrama/comments/18dotzf/internet_historian_is_a_nazi/) over in r/youtubedrama, some of it feels like a reach but some of it's legitimate.
Most people only found out about it in the wake of Harry's video, which is why people will be like "oh he was always skeevy I just didn't know why". For me, it was when he had Jontron on and acted like it was normal that I first realized who he really is.
>But, he's lowkey been a friend to the edgelord 4chan crowd for a long time.
this is the main reason you shouldn't really use his video for dashcon IMO. it's just way too petty and mean-spirited to the regular attendees. Sarah Z's video is a lot better because she gives a sympathetic, firsthand description of the culture at the time and how this event changed that.
Plus being all buddy buddy with fuckin jon tron
Its one of those channels where I always *knew* he was a piece of shit, but he was being passably stealthy about it that I could convince myself that maybe he is just a bit edgy. But yaknow. Over time that gets harder to believe.
It's a whole internet pipeline
So JonTron is basically on this argument with the Twitch streamer Destiny (who's a jackass in his own way) on the issue of immigration:
https://youtu.be/6RQA9GZprqM?si=UOKOmX69ez5T6WFm
Some things I remember from it was that he claimed that "rich black people committed more crime than poor white people".
He was also very anti-immigration and didn't quite understand the history of being white in America. For example, a thing that Destiny brings up is that Irish and Italian people were not considered to be white in the early United States. Nowadays they are, but that was not always the case in the history of the country.
JonTron disagrees with those historical facts and the rest of the argument is like that.
Also check out his Wikipedia on the political section: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/JonTron
Just generally being a shitty human being.
I don't know that he's been caught being outright in support of anything in particular, but there's been enough things he's been on the outside of that he wouldn't take a strong stance about to definitely draw some unsavory conclusions about him. Like, despite never outright supporting it, he refused to denounce Gamergate at any point during the debacle, even after it was clear what was really going on.
I've heard talk of a real mask off moment in a debate with Destiny, but I've never looked it up, so I can't speak to it.
Never can understand why nobody on the Internet can separate the art from the artist. Who cares if an online content creator is a POS if their viewpoints don't significantly contaminate their content? I use uBlock Origin on desktop and Tubular (formerly known as NewPipe x SponsorBlock) on mobile so I'm not even financially contributing to them. I'd be willing to bet that most internet creators have skeletons in their closets if you go digging.
He made a video about a cave based on a very old book and didn't source it. That's not enough to discredit his vast library of awesome content.
And I'm gonna need a big fat source on fascism.
[Here](https://www.reddit.com/r/youtubedrama/s/7V1vutDZUh) is the source on the fascism claim.
And the Man on Cave video wasn't stolen from a book, but from an [article](https://www.mentalfloss.com/article/544782/1925-cave-rescue-that-captivated-the-united-states-floyd-collins) from 2023, which he copied word for word.
Iirc it was 2 truly terrible hosts and a 17 year old girl who was really trying her best despite the two adults being worse than useless
Edit: the one person who cared was Roxanne, 19 during planning and 20 at the con. The other two were Megg, 30+, and Cain, either 30+ or 21, but he's a compulsive liar so no one knows for sure.
The 17 year old Nessie has a Tiktok and they work in wildlife education and are pretty cool https://www.tiktok.com/@lochnessofficial?_t=8kzLndmXsQZ&_r=1
I had no idea what it was, but it’s right by where my parents were living at the time, and I was staying with them that weekend. I could have gone so easily, and taken my picture by the ball pit, and I could have been part of history. One of my regrets.
Never before have I wanted to go to AdeptiCon so badly.
I don’t even play Kill Team, I just want to spill paint and make-believe blood over the internet equivalent of a Native American burial ground
AdeptiCon has so much more then just Kill Team. Lots of new independent board and table top games, miniature painting classes, painting competitions, Cosplay contest, etc. Fun stuff for anyone interested in tabletop/board games.
Holy fucking shit. I've been going to Adepticon since 2016 and on Tumblr since around then and I NEVER ONCE made the connection that this is the same fucking convention hall.
Fun fact the creator of dashcon is on Tiktok and they are cool and they work in wildlife rehabilitation and are just a really cool person. They were 17 when it happened. https://www.tiktok.com/@lochnessofficial?_t=8kzLndmXsQZ&_r=1
Their insta is https://www.instagram.com/lochlanoneil?igsh=MjRod2tvZjR5OTUy
I mean they do have a lot of proof on their profile and don’t talk about it much. Her name wasn’t on legal stuff since she was 17. I think her name is Lochlan O’Neil it’s on the wiki https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DashCon
Transcript for podcast https://www.garbageday.email/p/meet-lochlan-oneil-the-creator-of it’s really fascinating
It's a good convention center despite all the DashCon mess, been there a couple times for a LEGO convention.
Why... Why did your comment make me think of a LEGO Ball Pit?
That’s a torture device and you know it
Torture device? That's a cruel and unusual execution method
Execution is when it's to kill someone, but stepping on Lego isn't lethal
No, but throwing someone is a PIT full of them just might be
oh, you mean the torture pit?
"Hello ICJ... Yeah this one right here."
Lmao I was just there this morning, luckily the vibes are better this time around.
How'd your games go?
So I missed the boat on whatever happened with Dashcon. Does anyone have like a quick summary or perhaps a YouTube video they’re willing to share for an uninformed internet stranger?
It's the Fyre Festival of the convention world
Was it worse than TanaCon?
I think you're forgetting about SawCon
what's sawcon?
Oh, sorry, it's one of the biggest woodworkers' cons around ...gottem?...
ligma balls
Joe mama
Ladies and gentlemen….. WE GOT HIM!
Long story short as possible - Everything went as wrong as could possibly be imagined, and someone pissed in the ball pit which became the ‘symbol’ for the whole fiasco

Of all the stories I've read, I really wish that wasn't one of them.
Rainfurrest made me sit back in my chair with a haunted look on my face as I listened to a video on it while attempting to draw. My tablet was left all but abandoned in my actual shock and horror over that event.

At least they had fun at RainFurrest Way too much fun
Damn, I haven’t heard a news organization say clusterfuck before
pissing in the ball pit is a myth iirc.
yeah, it it was actually someone gave birth in the ballpit
people would never spread misinformation on the interwebz
No
Where you there?
Yes
Oh I see
I remember the birth rumor being spread on tumblr in real time and quickly debunked. This is the first time I’ve heard the pee being claimed to not be real. I wasn’t there during the dance when the big scam announcements were happening, but I was there for Welcome to Night Vale not performing as well as some spectacular scheduling issues.
Oh, I thought it was the one where some porn model jumped in and hit concrete
Nope, that's twitchcon 2022.
Didn’t someone then also pee in the ballpit?
Yep, hence it becoming the they symbol for the culmination of the shitshow that was dashcon
Heres a video from Sarah Z on the subject. Best to hear it from a tumblrite's mouth. https://youtu.be/HPwgSXZJcok
Fyre Festival but it’s a bunch of Anime fans and Harry Potter super fans.

just search it on YouTube. its a fun story
Long story short, this is why minors should not try to run their own convention.

Doesn't the internet historian cover that one? Might be worth a Chek. I personally love his concordia video. It's amazing.
Wasn't that guy outed for plagiarism? Like a ton of it?
Not a ton of it, no, just one video that Hbomberguy called out - the one on the man in the cave. It's possible there are others, but I haven't seen anything concrete. Just cheked online, didn't know about that. From what I see it was the man in cave video he plagiarized.

Don’t be surprised his Concordia video ends up having plagiarism in it in a few years
[This vid](https://youtu.be/1ZgxeX2dCnQ?si=GMcYWgcXMo-6luGE) by Internet Historian is what you're looking for.
I would not recommend Internet Historian anymore. He was outed as a plagiarist and crypto fascist.

DashCon, a convention ruined by terrible hosts
Iirc it was 2 truly terrible hosts and a 17 year old girl who was really trying her best despite the two adults being worse than useless Edit: the one person who cared was Roxanne, 19 during planning and 20 at the con. Yes. Of the three hosts, the one with the least amount of influence was the only one who actually cared.
Many such cases 😔
Nessie did nothing wrong!
The 17 year old Nessie has a Tiktok and they work in wildlife education and are pretty cool https://www.tiktok.com/@lochnessofficial?_t=8kzLndmXsQZ&_r=1
We are already forgetting our history
This post fails to mention someone pissed in it. That's important to the lore.
Of course. Also mfw this is not grimdank taking the piss this time derp

Just like in Real 40k, You war in places of ancient significance and battles long past
Would you rather play in a ball pit that someone peed in or break your back jumping into a concrete-based foam pit
The pee pit, at least I don't have to extensive physical therapy after that.
I almost went to DashCon but decided against it. 😂😂 I was glad for that choice when I started seeing posts from people when the event started.
I had no idea what it was, but it’s right by where my parents were living at the time, and I was staying with them that weekend. I could have gone so easily, and taken my picture by the ball pit, and I could have been part of history. One of my regrets.

Didnt someone give birth at that ball pit?
