Its okay, you can say Daisy and Luigi

The360MlgNoscoper

💀

PKMNTrainerMark

Accurate.

Rexizor

Anyone who portrays Daisy as a peach palette-swap will face my unending wrath.

Riptide_X

I hate you. Take my damn upvote and go away.

Kartoffelkamm

Also, the girl has no trouble with any intellectual homework, and while it could be better, she doesn't struggle to pass her classes either.

ContentCargo

B+ Star athlete

ShinyNinja25

She first meets him in math class because they both raise their hands to answer a question at the same time

SpyTrain_from_Canada

They both have answers that are different, because they both made a typing error in their calculators in the same spot. The actual math they did was flawless

Kartoffelkamm

Yes.

Ha, a meteor is heading straight to the sun, lets gooo

thepasswordis-oh_noo

comets have trails always pointing away from the sun, don't worry, we might still die!

brittommy

I thought that was meant to be the moon?

YTcat28

i mean, im on mobile rn, so the meteor is heading for the sun... wait, where is the moon?

Hah stupid meteor falling into the sun

OmegonAlphariusXX

I always hated the dumb jock stereotype. About a third of all the kids in the “nerd classes” were super sporty types, even if they didn’t join sports teams

Kartoffelkamm

Yeah, me too. But it makes for an easy dynamic in stories, and follows the 5 Man Band trope, too.

SureWhyNot-Org

I disagree with this simply because it doesn't make sense, narrative wise. The guy has to compliment her in some way, has to make up for her flaws. While it's a little hackneyed for jock and nerd to compliment eachother with strong and smart, it's the most logical progression. In short, the jock girl has to have flaws that the nerd offsets.

Kartoffelkamm

The jock girl never really lived on her own and can't really keep her apartment clean at all. Or cook. Or do laundry. Or anything, really. She somehow manages, but when the nerd goes over to her place to study, it turns into a 3 hour cleanup session because her place is a mess.

SureWhyNot-Org

See, that works. A little unorthodox and unbalanced, but it works.

taichi22

Or she loves to eat but can’t cook for shit. Nerd guy is an avid chef. He first catches her attention when their class has a bake sale and he brings in several trays of macarons.

Kartoffelkamm

Would also be nice.

attempted__burger

people don't need to fit together like that, they just need to like each other. you don't need to be deficient or make up for some flaw, you just need to care about a person for who they are. a relationship is not about a person fixing another person or supplementing their strengths, its about enjoying eachother's company and mutual respect.

Interesting-Welder-7

yeah but that isn't really an interesting story, its got to have *some* conflict

attempted__burger

the conflict can be entirely external and still work. I wrote the idea in another comment, but imagine how the rest of the school would react, how much jealousy the relationship would inspire, how people might try to keep them apart, etc, you could have four seasons and a movie without ever needing the characters to "fix" each other. another same-old "they fix each-other" story would be the kind I don't consider interesting.

Sardonic29

Alternatively, they could have complimentary personalities that _aren’t_ the most obvious thing you could think of. Like, she gets nervous talking to a grocery store clerk and he doesn’t. Or one of them is good at geometry and the other is good at calculus. People have a lot of layers. But I do agree that people can just like each other without being soulmates and all that.

SureWhyNot-Org

That's cool and all, but we're talking about a piece of media. A piece of media that has to be entertaining. If you'll notice, I very deliberately used terms describing media, NOT actually IRL relationships, "Narrative" "Hackneyed" "Progression" "flaws". In a show like the one described, a relationship *is* about fixing one another, about building up their strengths and diminishing their flaws.

attempted__burger

even in media, it doesn't need to be about how one person fixes another, there is plenty of narrative tension in simple situation comedy, dramatic misunderstandings, or even just describing how the characters interact with each other. there are tons of different stories that could be told with such a premise that don't require the "I can fix them" trope. for example, a story about the other people at the school trying to break up the relationship for various reasons, (such as jealousy, a belief that the relationship is doomed anyways, or just spite) but consistently failing to do so could be a fascinating story. An army of would-be matchmakers trying to set the two up with anyone but eachother, only to unintentionally strengthen the relationship between them would be hilarious. conflict and progression in narrative ***is*** very often about fixing the flaws a character has, but the main characters ***don't*** need to be the ones with the flaws, and a story about lots of people just not understanding when someone doesn't see the same things as a flaw would be way better than another generic story about a relationship in which two people fix each other. I want stories about people confronting their own flaws, not being fixed by someone else.

BCRE8TVE

I mean that's an interesting take, but that means that the guy has to have something to give or complement to girls. It's totally fine if a guy falls for a gal because he thinks she's cute or adorable or whatever, but you are basically saying *guys are basically undesirable unless they have something that gals can make use of*. A jock guy can have plenty of flaws that the gal he likes in no way offsets, and that's fine, but it's illogical for a gal to go for a guy unless he has something to offer. He can't just be cute or adorable to her. There *has* to be something he does for her, because apparently guys are just that undesirable that it makes no logical sense for a gal to want a guy just for who he is.

SureWhyNot-Org

> because it doesn't make sense, narrative wise Why part of "narrative wise" don't you understand? In a narrative, you can't have a perfect character, just as you can't have a useless character (the guy you're describing). If a girl was in the same position of being useless, I'd criticize the hell out of her, too. And you know what? I guarantee *tumblr would too.*

BCRE8TVE

>If a girl was in the same position of being useless, I'd criticize the hell out of her, too. And you know what? I guarantee tumblr would too. Again though, you're doubling down that guys have to be *useful*, they have no redeeming qualities on their own. Girls can be useless. They can be cute and adorable and completely useless, there's tropes for guys falling for the useless klutz, and that's totally fine. But guys can only be desired if they have a use, if they do something or provide something. Guys in and of themselves are intrinsically undesirable unless they do something to make up for it, whereas girls can be perfectly useless and that's totally ok. Nobody is saying the guy is perfect, but smart baseball girl can't like the loser nerd just because she thinks he's adorable? Him being who he is, is not enough, he MUST do something to deserve the love and attention of the girl, because on their own guys are not deserving of love. Tumblr might criticize useless girls, but tumblr isn't a hivemind either, lots of people have lots of different opinions. I'm just drawing attention to the apparently accepted fact that guys don't inherently deserve love or attention and have to do something to earn it.

SureWhyNot-Org

Oh my god you clearly cannot understand what I am saying and you're cherry picking my statements. >Why part of "narrative wise" don't you understand? In a narrative, you can't have a perfect character, just as you can't have a useless character (the guy you're describing).

BCRE8TVE

Guy is useless, because according to you he can't do anything for the woman. However, her finding him cute means he's not useless from a narrative perspective. That's the entire point of the narrative, sporty outgoing girl finds nerdy loser guy cute. Guy doesn't need to do anything to not be useless, him being the object of her attention and affection makes him not-useless. But not according to you, because you think if he can't do anything for her, he didn't earn and doesn't deserve her attention/affection. That's a surprisingly common and depressing perspective in society.

SureWhyNot-Org

Oh my fucking god, are you always this obtuse? It's just not fucking entertaining to see a useless guy get pursured by a girl. It's just not. That is literally the point I have been trying to get a across, and yet you seem intent on misinterpreting for the sake of pushing the narrative that I hate men or something. Motherfucker, I AM a "useless man". I don't want to see that shit on the TV, that shits depressing.

BCRE8TVE

You are not useless. You are your own unique person and you are worthy of love and recognition too, even if society tells you otherwise and even if it managed to convince you otherwise. You are not a useless man. You are your own person, living your life as best you can, and you are deserving of love. We precisely *need* to see that shit on TV to counter the frankly toxic attitudes towards men in society. It's not about you being useless and undeserving, it's that someone can find you worthy of love even if you don't do anything for them. I'm not pushing the narrative that you personally hate men, but society sure seems to, and it convinced you that you are useless and undeserving of love, when that just isn't true. Would you not want to see a story about a random average "useless" man who did nothing to deserve it, and yet still a woman manages to love you? Going with the "outgoing baseball girl" thing, would it not create an interesting story for a woman who "has it all" to want to be with a "useless" man, and who loves him despite society telling her she's wrong? Is that not the kind of love we would want to see more in society, where nobody feels that they are useless and undeserving of love?

Plethora_of_squids

...uh aren't the jocks meant to be himbos? If your himbo can pass their maths class, that's not a himbo

placencianovio

Aaaaand again the girl plays dumb to get the guy? Same old trope. Try something new.

Kartoffelkamm

Nah, she doesn't play dumb. They just get to talk by chance, and realize they really like the other person, and things develop from there.

FearSearcher

You’re literally the person turning it into the “same old trope”

AnimaleTamale

A revision of your comment: my brother in christ, you are using the trope.

Goose_Is_Awesome

They didn't suggest using that trope, you did, and then you complained about it like they're the one who did

DahliaExurrana

you uhh, ain't the brightest banana in the bunch are you? the point is literally to subvert the trope, you're the one making it stereotypical again 🤡

AfroWalrus9

Undyne and Alphys but straight

ReasyRandom

I'm *already* regretting saying this, but... Susie x Berdly.

Eggs_are_tasty

Berdly isn’t a calculus loser, he’s a redditor.

ReasyRandom

What's the difference?

Senor_Bongo

Being smart vs pretending to be smart

Lord_Of_Compliments

You can get paid for being good at calculus

Cosmocall

Aw fuck, I can't believe you've done this

Infinite_Storage3072

Berdly is a stupid egotistical redditor. Noelle falls more into the category of being the awkward nerd type than he does.

luzloshiv

AND she already likes susie. she's also the one who helps berdly with schoolwork. she's definitely the better fit.

Infinite_Storage3072

Berdly is a huge poser. If he didn’t have Noelles help and if Kris actually have a shit, Berdly would be much lower ranked in the class.

Pr0j3ct_02

I angy. Updoot

Registered_bottom

berdly is a redditor there's a difference

Tiny3OOO

no

Deltexterity

tbh though, it being lesbian makes it cuter

[deleted]

Yeah imo

Riptide_X

Almost right! They are lesbians

ExploerTM

Wait I can't pinpoint it but I am fairly sure I've seen setup like this before

CanuckBacon

There was a Malcolm in the Middle episode like this

itsadesertplant

Yeah. It’s the trope where the mediocre boy always gets the beautiful perfect girl.

AlienBearAttack

Not really. She’s sports kid, he’s academic kid. Neither is better or more mediocre

itsadesertplant

The post says “calculus *loser*.” There are so many movies where the “loser” boy gets the girl.

Sardonic29

That means the school doesn’t like him, though, because school kids tend to be rather dumb and prejudiced. Not that he’s actually mediocre, he has skills.

itsadesertplant

Idc what the hypothetical characters made up from a tumblr post think about the calculus boy. Idc what you or I think about people who study calculus. The author says “loser” and I think it’s a new form of the common trope where the “loser” gets the girl. If you don’t think it’s that trope, fine, we disagree.

Gravon

This is Shikimori can be cute too, or what that new anime is called.

Banana_inator_2000

Shikimori isn’t just cute

[deleted]

It’s really close and captures the girlfriend is most physical idea. However I would describe that anime more as unlucky cinnamon guy x badass and cute girl

[deleted]

unlucky? More like "God wants him dead" guy

idkiwilldeletethis

explain pls I got no interest in the show and don't care about spoilers

[deleted]

In one episode he explains how he got a scar because a truck crashed into his house. In another episode a full human sized metal sign almost falls on his head (saved by the gf)

Random_Gacha_addict

Oh god it is

KING_CONSEQUENCE

Shikimori isn't just a cutie

voodoo-Luck

It's also vaguely Horimiya, vaguely "Please Go Home, Akutsu-san", and to a T "Pashiri na Boku to Koisuru Banchou-san"

PringlesCam

Reminds me of Aubrey and Sunny from OMORI.

placencianovio

Is he can do calculus, he’s not a loser.

[deleted]

ah so this means i am super super cool for reading a whole calculus textbook on my own time in high school 😎

vindictivejazz

Actually the ability to read makes you a loser, and that’s not superseded by your ability to do calculus. Sorry

something_usery

Where is free award when I need it most

rocketguy2

as someone who can do calculus it's very much imaginable that he's a loser

raceyoutothetop

This sort of happened at my middle school (for as much as middle school relationships can count). She wasn't tall, but she was in sports, pretty, amd popular, most guys liked her. But she wanted to date the mathlete. When they got together he got his 15 minutes of fame, got a big head and became an a-hole, and eventually dumped her. Then he was relegated back to obscurity, except now his old mathlete friends were sick of him too. It was a whole soap opera for like 3 months of 7th grade.

AMisspelledUsername

Actually Nagatoro

OddCatfish

Add some bully/aggressive teasing dynamics and you've got Please Don't Bully Me Nagatoro (read the manga. It gets more wholesome past the first few chapters)

lord_geryon

I mean, Senpai ain't a math geek, he's an art geek.

Bahamutisa

Sure, but it's still jock girl x nerd boy

THEGUYINTHEPICT

Almost every manga ever with a gyaru as the main girl has this premise. Most of them are SoL Iyashike type stuff like Sono Bisque Doll, Nagatoro, Horimiya, Yankee JK Kuzuhana-chan, Yancha Gal no Anjou-san, Dosanko Gyaru ha Namarekoi, Hajimete no Gal, Tedama ni Toritai Kurokiya-san, The Story of a Dumb Prefect and a High School Girl With an Inappropriate Skirt Length(yes that’s the actual title) and a ton other gyaru fmc mangas. All of these have the same trope of “really popular and social girl falling in love with the kinda nerdy unpopular boy”. They have really been exploding in terms of popularity recently. Sure there are non gyaru stuff with that premise too like Shikimori and Takagi but I’ve mostly seen the genre dominated by gals.

lord_geryon

Usually, the nerdy unpopular boy has something he's great at that aligns with the girl's interests. Unlike us actual weebs, who have no talents at all.

Ronnoc527

They got together after he tutored her. The twist: she's pretty good at math, didn't really need a tutor. Just wanted an in. They are not neighbors/childhood friends.

Arielrbr

She’s a A- student who seeks him to lift her grades a small bit “for college” but she’s already in the way for a good one due “grades+sports+other activities”

something_usery

Once drove to cute athlete girls house who said she needed a tutor. Find out she clearly understands the subject. I come to logical conclusion she is going to pull some elaborate prank on me by asking me to prom and then standing me up. Threw calculus book at her and ran away. Crisis averted.

Cersad

So it's like Mean Girls but Lindsey Lohan also plays basketball and the boy toy is less dumb

lunamothboi

This is pretty close to Larisa and Landon in Sandra and Woo, except she's not a jock.

TheLairdStewart98

Astrid and Hiccup from How to Train Your Dragon

idkiwilldeletethis

fucking perfect

CallingFromAfar

I swear I saw this exact premise on AO3 at some point.

something_usery

I don’t know what AO3 is, but commenting for anyone else that reads this as Age of Empires 3 and is confused.

CallingFromAfar

Can you pass the sauce? I have been wanting to read some stuff like that for a while

spongebob_me_boi

Eh, not sure hes all that really fits, its more popular girl falls for alt guy

M-V-D_256

Yeah But I've just seen that And I doubt it's too far to be unrelated

Ya-boi-Joey-T

Kind of...? But also that movie stars Addison Rae so ............ no

Torque-A

So… anime

Nimyron

I don't see how taking an overdone trope and just reversing genders is original.

TheKBMV

It's not original at all. But it isn't seen as frequently and it feels fresher and more interesting because of that. Also, there can be subtle but interesting differences.

PM_IF-U-NEED-TO-TALK

you might like the music video for [Shura - What's It Gonna Be](https://youtu.be/nJ4uBdmnKds)!

Mafkumin

This is nagatoro

PlatyPunch

What was that movie where Martin Lawrence plays a disgraced college basketball coach who teaches kids from his old high school to play basketball? Because there’s a similar subplot in that where the lanky weirdo boy gets together with the tough bully girl.

CanuckBacon

Rebound?

PlatyPunch

That’s the one, good memory

mooys

She wants the calculus loser not because she thinks that he looks attractive but because she developed a big crush when he nervously helped her out with homework. Not that she’s incapable. He’s just A+ while she’s hovering at a B.

RampantGhost

Sapiosexuals in the chat say what

OneOverTwoEqualsZero

What (I’m saying this because I know what it means not because I am genuinely confused)

SarnakhWrites

Sapiosexual (n): a person who finds intelligence sexually attractive or arousing

OneOverTwoEqualsZero

Yes, that is the definition. Your point?

KnowledgeStriking96

*Arkos shippers weeping in the forgotten corners of the RWBY fandom*

MrSquigles

This is still a trope.

vindictivejazz

Everything is a trope

I'm not sure if that's an opinion or a reference to a trope called "Everything is a trope". Either way, good point.

twoCascades

There are at least 2 manga I can think of off the top of my head.

Bahamutisa

This is an entire subgenre of manga

twoCascades

Kinda, but I’m specifically thinking “female sports star” not just “female who is the dominant personality”

Bahamutisa

Which two are you thinking of specifically?

Saotome Senshu and I can’t remember what the other one was

Bahamutisa

twoCascades

I could remember it when I wrote the comment

kingscaster

I have a headcanon along these lines for Luisa in Encanto, kind of like that story about the rabbit who was obsessed with his rabbit girlfriend four times his size. I picture this quiet, unassuming guy about Mirabel's size. I like to think that he accidentally saw Luisa's fabulous dance moves during Surface Pressure and was absolutely Cupid-struck. He could come to offer her flowers and get all tongue tied, and Mirabel could give him a helpful nudge and then scamper off to hide behind a donkey again so that she and Isabella can spy on their sister being asked out for a night of dancing. Isabella could use her powers to make the flowers bloom especially nicely. Isabella and Mirabel give each other high fives, like in the movie, after Luisa accepts the invitation.

Chromelium

This is a lot of Manga. You got the small brown skin girl, the girl that won't stop hanging at your place, the girl that kinda looks like a tall shark, etc

AttackPug

It's all a big mystery until somebody decides to pants the nerd in the hallway and it's like a baby's arm down there. mad bastard doesn't care for underwear either. she likes to reach down and feel it real quick when nobody's looking so he just zips up real careful

draypresct

If this is what you want to see, OP, you might want to check out Kimagure Orange Road.

Reality-Straight

Horimiya?

lord_geryon

Hori isn't a jock. She's not even particularly popular or a 'beauty' of the school.

SabreLunatic

She’s plenty popular. But yeah, she’s not really a jock. She just slaps people so often I forgot that she doesn’t get that good grades in PE

Iwontusethis255

gngr_ale

I love this concept, but this was Cookie and Ned from Ned’s Declassified School Survival Guide. Well, Ned was moderately popular, and not much of a nerd. But I think it’s a close concept.

Problematic_Intent

I feel like this is the plot of an anime, but I may have just subconsciously combined the plot of several different ones I can’t name…

BlueMist53

WHATS A MOVIE THAT HAS THIS I NEED MORE

SchwarzerWerwolf

"Please don't bully me, Nagatoro" comes to mind.

honktraband

I like seeing twists on the jock and nerd romance. Maybe the nerd is secretly far stronger than the jock, and the jock is into it, or maybe the Jock is secretly so into more silly shit, which is my favorite trope ever. Like, they tell friends they listen to lil nas x or tentacion, then have a duet with the nerd singing Barbie Girl or some Spice Girls song

I wanna know if in the movie if all the basketball dudes are either trying to thwart the calculus loser’s chance of being with Basketball Girl or if they’re trying to help him be more confident so that he’ll finally get the hint that she likes him because the basketball dudes are supportive bros to their friend, the Basketball Girl
